Mitsubishi super select 4WD how to

  • If you want to know how to operate Super Select drive system from Mitsubishi this is video for you.
BB Walker explains what modes are possible in four wheel drive Super Select gear produced by Mitsubishi on models like Pajero 3500 24V DOHC.
In this tutorial you can learn how to enable 4HLc and 4LLc modes with manual transmission.
Super select is installed on many models not only Pajero also known as #Montero in some countries
You can find in L200, Pajero Sport, Pajero, Challenger, Triton and Delica
    Modes in #Mitsubishi SuperSelect
2H: 2WD, high range. 100% of available power is sent to the rear axle. This is default mode for road and highways
4H: 4WD, high range. Power is sent to both the front and rear axles while the centre differential remains unlocked. It is good if there is a mixed conditions , snow on hard roads.
4HLc: 4WD, high range, locked centre differential. Power is sent to the front and rear axles with the centre differential locked, ensuring that a percentage of power is still sent to the forward axles even if a rear wheel is spinning (and vice versa).
This is good when you going offroad uphills, down hills. Do not use on hard roads because on curves on high traction you can damage the shaft
4LLc: 4WD, low range, locked centre differential. Power is sent to the front and rear axles with the centre differential locked, ensuring that a percentage of power is still sent to the forward axles even if a rear wheel is spinning (and vice versa) however the gearing ratio is doubled, increasing torque by more than 2x and reducing speed in each of the gears by the same factor.
This mode should be used only on super hard offroad condition , high climbing or when you need to move very slow thanks to gear reduction. Never ever use it on hard roads.

Incorrect. The N on the Super Select lever is a reminder that the gear select lever, both manual and auto, needs to be in neutral before you engage 4LLc. You can change between the other three options without being in neutral.

OK, sorry mate, but there are a few things You said wrong. Actully alot is wrong. This is Super Select.
2H - 4H - 4HLc - switching between theese three modules is allowed DURING driving with two conditions met: accelerator pedal eased (means not pushed, breaking with engine) and speed is under 100km/h (for switching time!), with recommendation the vehicle is moving straight forward. You can drive 2H and 4H in every road, all the time. The idea is that 4WD is permanent, and 2WD is econonmy. So 4H you can drive up to maximum speed. Just to change it both ways 2H/4H must take place under 100km/h with no significant greater power from engine on the drivetrain than from wheels. 4HLc locks central differential but also can be switched during driving. It puts 50:50 power to front and back, thats why it can not be driven on roads that are not slippery (i.e. mud, ice, snow,
deep sands etc.). It shouldnt be used on rocks, gravel, or even wet asphalt roads. You dont have to press clutch during switching between 2H-4H-4HLc. There is a drawing on the lever! To switch to 4HLc you push it to side and then forward. (for automatic garbox you should put it to N if the vehicle is stopped an You can shift while driving in D, for manual You obviously have cluthc or neutral while stopped).
As for 4LLc, its a different story. For automatic gearbox you must stop the car and select N. Then press lever and shift it to position. For manual you must stop the car and either depressing clutch or in neutral. Changing it back requires same thing. Both gearboxes indicate switching by blinking all wheel icons. Driver should wait untill wheels are locked. AT vehicles dont have N in SSelect lever.
R/D Lock is independent. It works only in 4HLc and 4LLc. Disengages in 4H 2H. Should be engaged while vehicle is stopped. Should be driven under 12km/h.
BTW SSelect lever has a nice sign: "PRESS" but it does get pale from the sun.
Final word - all above applies for new gearboxes, which do not exist anymore. Switching conditions should be determined by users assesment of the cars state.
    p.s.
All this is written on the sticker each Pajero has on the door or side of the center console.

Black Death thanks for the clear explination! On my Pajero (‘95) I have only 2H, 4H and 4L modules, probably is the older gearbox. I also have the R/D lock button, but when I try to block the back differential on 4L module, I get a wierd sound and the orange light goes interrmitent but doesn’t remain on. Have any ideea how to do this right? Thanks

    • @-BlackDeath-
      @-BlackDeath- 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@damian5791 For this I have two advises:
      1st: quote from original manual:
In case the operating indication lamp keeps flickerring
even if the rear differential lock switch has been turned on:
      (1) If the vehicle speed is more than 12 km/h (7.4 mph),
redu cing the speed below 6 km/h (3.7 mph) will make the rear differential lock operate and the lamp illuminate.
      (2) Move the steering wheel to right and left if speed of the vehicle speed is below 12 km/h (7.4 mph) . Repeat moving the vehicle backward and forward if it is stuck in muddy roads.
2nd: my advise: check all hoses and pipes. RD lock is operated by air pump. It is locked by air actuator. And its position is monitored by electric switch. If the light is blinking either air pump is not working, hose is not sealed or sensor is not giving the right signal. If You say you hear "wierd sound" than pump probablu is working (buzz), so it is pumping and has power. If You hear also distinctive "cling" sound, then R/D actuator probably is engaged. so air hose is OK. All that's left, is to see if there sensor is sending right signal (it is Normally Open circuit). It's OEM nr is MB664396, and if You see it on the photo You'll know what is its behaviour. If You inspect it all and, i.e., wont see any damages to wiring harness, etc, just take it out and check it on the workshop table. Im not sure if taking it out will cause oil to drain, so keep it in mind.
Blinking lights of any 4x4 Pajeros drive component indicator means, in general, that the action was not confirmed. In simple words when You shift the lever, sensor must check and confirm engagement or disengagement of clutches, gears, etc... if it does not, indicator blinks. That does not mean that mechanically some parts are not engaged! So be aware that You might be "locked"!
Finally gearbox: You have Easy Select. Your C/D lock indicator does not exist - its all white. Its an older system, true, but later, when 2nd Pajeros generation was replaced by 3rd, 2000-2003 (i think) Pajeros were sold as Pajero Classic - 2nd gen look. with Easy Select. More You can read here: i69.servimg.com/u/f69/15/09/17/32/scan0010.jpg

Black Death a big thank you! As I understand, the hose is the problem, because after the (buzz) I don’t hear the (cling) sound. Will take it next week to a garage and tell the guys this. I’d not try to fix it as it sounds a bit over my skills :) thanks again!

You use the N gear when the car is operated e.g. with an electric winch. This mode essentially disconnects the entire transmission - so that the full power is devoted to supplying the alternator. In this mode, even if you shift into gear 1 or 2, the car will not go.

Put a pipe directly from the vacuum pump to the actuator installed under the front differential. If the blinking light disappear in 2H it means that the selenoids are the origin of the problem. If not the sensors installed on the front diff and/or on the transfert case are not working.

Hello very useful video but I have a question for you ?
What is the differnece when 4LLC and what is difference when you press R/D lock
    Thanks

    • @BBWalkerTV
      @BBWalkerTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well. 4LLC is gear reductor plus locking central differential mechanism which means same power for front and rear axis. R/D lock additionally lock rear differential which means same power (50%) on left and right wheel on rear axis. Combining 4LCC with R/D lock you have constant 25% of momentum for left and rigth rear wheel.

If it is blinking, it is not engaged.. yet. Solid color/non blinking means it is engaged. Often you need to either move the vehicle a little, OR in some 4WD's you are going to fast and need to slow down so it can sync up.

Hi. You can use 4HLc or 4LLc on normal city streets? Or you could break something?

    • @BBWalkerTV
      @BBWalkerTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

No, you can not. Because front and rear axis will be locked and in case of climbing, maneuvering on flat surface or even in turns front and rear wheels spins in different speeds - can destroy a transfer case very quickly,
From all 4WD modes - on normal city streets you can drive on 4H only (center lock is opened) - it is great for partially snowed hard roads or slippery conditions . But remember 4h will always consume more fuel and it will be a little bit louder so use it only when extra traction is necessary, otherwise use 2h

Power to electricity and alternator? In low gear you dont have more power on the alternator. The power on the alternator is comanded by the engine speed. So being in H or L its the same as the RPM are the same.
