Don, I want to thank you for build videos with regard to your retirement home. It shows me, as 62 year old fart, we can still get things done if we put our mind to it. And your doing this mostly alone! When I get my off-grid property I will not allow myself to complain for one minute! You are an inspiration, I tip my hat to you good Sir!
You are so welcome for the videos MJ. So delighted that I would be an inspiration. Many thanks.
Just can't beat those New Brunswick Canada Genes ❤❤❤
@@elspet3813 Yes all of those years of working on potatoe farms and climbing into eagles nests helped a lot I think LOL.
MJ, just make sure you get out there and do it. Sometimes it pays to go smaller but go now. I started at 62, I'm 69 now, happy as
Cheers mate.
Hi Don! This is my home court. I worked for a number of years at a truss factory. A great time. Learned a lot in that time. We called the truss you have a "W-truss" Very common for cabins in Norway. Funfact, We have snow-weighted factors for how strong the trusses should be. I look forward to seeing more of your project.
Great comments Morten. Great thing is that we get a couple of snowfalls a year and rarely amount to only a few cms.
Am old enough to remember when wood was not the first thought upon hearing the word Truss.🤣 Press on, Don!
Yep no question bud. I am that age as well.
You have more energy and get go then alot of people half your age. Keep up the great work Don
That means a lot leprechaun. Many thanks for faithfully watching these.
My exact thoughts 👍👍. We’re of a different generation 😃💖👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Looks great. I'm glad to see you found a quality local provider and that you didn't have to make the trusses yourself. Another milestone achieved.
Thanks a ton for watching! Yep this company is just plain a joy to work with.
Looks like you'e found a truss company that's providing superb quality trusses for your home. I have always appreciated about you that all your careful planning includes an insistence on quality. I cannot wait to see the trusses installed.
8:58 trusses installed you don't have to wait.👍
Such high praise and encouragement. Many thanks.
Sneak preview. I will show the actual installation process soon!
Good to see you again Don! So happy you had good luck and experience with yoiur trusses. Look forward to the next step!
Good to see you here as always. More vids coming!
Hey Don.. making more progress ! Enjoyed seeing behind the scenes..great info 😁👍
Thanks so much Paul. Appreciate you being here.
Well done Don. It`s all happening now .I see you have already fitted all the trusses. Did you get some help with the fitting or did you brave the situation yourself. I know that if it was me , i would definitely have needed help with that part of the build. The big home is really taking shape now.
Fitted them myself once they were carried into the building. Stay tuned for that one. Definitely a nail biter LOL.
Have been watching you since you first got started with the little house. Keep us posted looking forward for more updates.
So appreciate you watching so faithfully Michael! Many thanks!
Waltzing Matilda! I'm glad your trusses got waltzed onto your job site, good decision, and the company, such a find for you. I would say you more than returned their goodwill!
Thanks so much Mareesa. They were a joy to work with.
Good call on the trusses and good job finding that truss company.
Thanks Mark. So delightful to work with those guys.
I have been following your progress with great interest for a couple of years now. I am from the Toronto, Ontario area, moved the states, found my way to Sonoma County, Ca, then to Orange County, and have been planning to retire in AZ. Great decision having trusses built and delivered, I hope you get some help placing them.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Be safe.
Thanks so much. Stay tuned to see the installation process!
I used SouthWest Truss also, and yes excellent service and product. Assuming they sponsered this episode or at least gave you a good discount. Love watching your progress Don.
Hi Mark. Yes indeed they gave me a generous discount and I hope it brings them more business. They deserve it.
I,m surprised you didn't stress more that they roll the gangnail plates into the wood to ensure that every thing is flat and uniformly connected. You showed them hammering them in place, but it also showed how irregular hammer blows leave the gangnail.
Actually what you didnt see is that they rolled off the assembly area to another area where they were finished up nicely. Take a look at the final stack of them outside for reference. Cheers!
They hammer the plates in enough to hold everything together. Many work stations/ one central press roller.
Thanks for the factory tour and see them building your trusses. Great Advertisement for them and I hope you get some sort of discount because of your video.
Hi Joseph. Yes indeed Southwest Truss did indeed provide a lovely discount in exchange for this vid. Of course a large motivating factor for me is just sharing where other off grid folks in the area can get their trusses. Driving to Tucson or other places would be a bit much I figured as well.
I wanted to see them go up! Good video.
Keep watching Robert. Will show you that soon!
I'd build a contemporary commercial-style 3/12 roof pitch with knee-high sidewalls and sheet roofing membrane. Drain all the water off to one side of the building which would reduce gutter costs by 50%.
Stay tuned to see an affordable rainwater harvesting solution coming up...
Fantastic Don!!! Great Headway. Lovin the series...you inspire me!!!
Thanks for such a lovely encouraging comment !
I was looking forward to seeing the trusses installed.
Yes indeed. Stay tuned... you will see it.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 that's great news 😀
Hi Don, hope you’re doing well in this heat. It has been pretty brutal. Awesome video. Looks like they did a good job on your trusses.❤❤❤
Hi Pam! Hope you and Brian are doing well! I bet your home is looking fantastic! Yeah you know me unless its 120 in the shade I just dont have an issue LOL.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 we’re doing well. Not a lot of progress yet. We’ve been traveling and having fun lol
Nice to have a local company to do your trusses!
No question Carol!
Nice local company you can Trusse in! It was helpful for us thanks!
Delighted the vid was helpful. Lovely meeting you guys at the farmers market. Cheers!
Excellent job, Don and you did the right thing going with that company. Thanks for the video.
You are so welcome. Yes excellent company.
Right on. Looks like you’re making good progress. Be safe moving those trusses. Love the videos!
Thanks Tim! Yep found out trusses can be an "adventure" for sure. Stay tuned...
Glad to see you back. Was wondering what happened to you. Take care.
Thanks Rutha! You as well.
If you enjoy watching, be sure to add comments as it helps with his promotion on YT and its algorithms.
Yep the more comments the better! Thanks for mentioning that!
Great add Don.
All joking aside, Good video, Good company, but not for down under 😊
Yeah sorry mate but I suspect you got some good blokes that know how to build those things.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 too bloody right Mate, you got it in one.
Wow what a brilliant cabin, the company was excellent. I hope you are well.
Simon 🇬🇧
Simon!!! Have missed you mate! Thought you fell off the perch as they say... LOL. Thanks for commenting.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 was dealing with Tests for cancer, so been busy but all clear, hurray.Hey your cabin will be bigger than mine as my cabin ( park home in England),Mine is 20x30 foot.Wow when done you will have loads of space Don.
Room for a party, don't forget my invite 😄
Hope there is a video or you, and hopefully, some help getting the trusses up. At 85 I am amazed at you energy and resourcefulness.
Thanks William. Video soon to come of the trusses all in place!
Next time you go to town, drop off a nice box of donuts for those guys.
Great suggestion. Thanks.
Glad you found a solution.
Thanks so much. Me as well!
Looking forward to hearing your roof plans, I had to hire some helpers for that part.
Looking forward to doing the roof for sure! Be time to do that one before I know it. Thanks for watching Jory!
Another great video from a great guy.
Wow how kind Robert. Thank you.
Great video!
Awesome response. Thanks Rhonda!
Wow Don, you are very fortunate to have found local, quality trusses! They look amazing! I really appreciate that you were treated so well, what a great company!!!! Everything is moving along quite quickly, each video is exciting Don!!! Have a great week!
Thanks so much Martha! Delighted you find the vids exciting. Such an encouraging comment.
😎
I just did a safety training at a truss company it was neat to see the process I’m glad you shared it with everyone.
Wow how cool is that Sarah! Way to go and glad you enjoyed seeing trusses made!
You are really coming along there! Looks great! Stay hydreated out there, it's getting really hot now. Take care.
Just chugged a large bottle of gatorade as we speak. Thanks so much.
Awesome do you have a video on the Trust getting put up??
Stay tuned... lots of detail on how they got put up.
A lot of progress for your home and it looks good so far.

Thanks so very much for watching Dexter!
Support you’re local business, good going Don. 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Thanks Shane. They are so nice to work with.
Yeehaw, Mr. Don Kimball. Progress! Are you still seeing Roadie closeby?
Cheers!
Hi Nanny! Yes Roadie and new girlfriend came by just a few days ago. You might have chuckled as he decided by himself to check out my new building and landed on the very top! In the nose bleed section as it were LOL.
I think you need some wall and roof bracing, strongbacks, and some frame tie downs...hopefully these elements are installed before you progress to much
Hi Peter. There is indeed wall bracing all throughout the building. Big old 2x6 framing seems super sturdy at this point. You will see the truss bracing etc in a future video. Thanks for watching!
Good place to get my Trusses done, thank you so much!
Totally welcome Jim!
Wow it's coming along! Great job on all....
Lake Havasu 🌞 Az
Thanks for being so faithful to watch all of the progress. Cheers!
Great video, Don
Thanks so much!
Good Stuff, Interesting.
Thanks for watching Alex.
All truss, no fuss!
LOL. Funny.
Don ! You answered my question. I think I’m going to do the same. How did you get them installed? I guess you can’t go wrong with Canadian lumber lol
Great Oscar. They are great people to work with for sure! I will show you the install on an upcoming video. It was chalk full of adventure for sure. Yep lumber from the homeland LOL.
Thank you Don for such good information. I see your trusses are installed. Did the company put them up for you? I hope so, as it looks like a difficult job for one person.
Hi Wylie. Nope the company didnt put them up. Stay tuned for a future video coming soon showing them going up!
I'm so happy for your progress Don, I am right now building a concrete and steel house in the Philippines, a little different than yours! Best wishes for continued success, health and happiness.
Many thanks for watching Gary. I suspect your home will be fun to build and affordable as well.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 It's 90% done, it has been a wonderful experience. It is about 3000 sq feet, two story and about 200k USD to build.
Thanks for bringing us along.....
Your so welcome Sandra! Great fun sharing all of this.
Did I miss the video of the trusses being installed. I checked the archive and can't see any video of it. It looks like the trusses are already up in this video.
Nope. Coming up soon!
I wish it was Some. people could come up and help him voluntarily.I wish I had the money but I'm on a fax low-income to help finish his house. It would be really nice that some people could step up and Volunteer i To help him.😮
Thats so thoughtful Earline. I do have folks that can come by and help. I just so enjoy the process doing the solo build. Kind of like sculpting or painting. Its so rewarding constructing it alone and watching it come along. Hope that makes sense.
Conifex lumber operates just a couple hours from where I live in northern BC. Still some caribou in that area and lots of birds & grizzly bears. But your trusses cost more than they should have. The US adds significant duties to imported Canadian lumber in order to protect the US industry! Politics aside, the place is really coming along! Nice work!
Wow Mark. Had no idea you would pick up on the company where these came from. Yep lots of tariffs and other hoops to jump through when here in the US. Great to hear from you and hope your summer is going great!
Where then? More affordable?
@@nonya68 Tell your local congressman to stop charging protectionist duties on Canadian lumber! All Americans are paying high lumber prices because of a powerful US lobby. Canada has nothing but trees and a low value currency. Lumber imported to the US from Canada should be dirt cheap for you.. but it isn't, because of the extra duties supported by US lumber companies.
@@nonya68 Sierra Vista area. But anywhere in Cochise County is remarkable.
How's the current heatwave working out for you ??? Stay cool !!! Comparing temps in Arizona to my home state in the SE are 20-30 degrees cooler. Ouch.
Hi Benny. I have an odd physiology. I rarely overheat. So that be said I am actually enjoying it.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Still stay cool !
Great progress, how did you convince those trusses to jump up on the roof?
It's a mystery.... Well actually you will see all of that in an upcoming video Peter!
I'm not sure if you have planned a wrap around porch for this structure, I might have missed it? I noticed you do not have much of an over hang on the truss, is this by design? The Over hang is needed here to keep the sun off the walls as much as possible. 2 foot over hang is ideal to create this cooling effect.
I will be doing a large 10'x40' porch on the east side of the home. Then a smaller porch where the main windows are on the west side. Should be fun.
I am curious. So how much will you save, if any, by building this yourself rather than buying one built on your lot of the same size? From what I have seen an 16x40 all wood goes for around 20k built on your lot and a metal for around 10k.
Hi John. 20K used to be the story a few years ago. Although its very possible you can get low quality 16x40 sheds from big box stores etc. Honestly it's been a while since I checked. My requirements were that it would be solidly built (think like Amish style) and be made of 2x6s etc. Fast forward and I calculated I will save around 7K to build this myself. A lot of change for someone with my budget.
Did you ever finish building your shower? I wondered about that. You never did talk anymore about that. Or do anyone know could you let me know what happened about that?😮
Hi Earline. I put everything on hold to work on my "big home". Hang in there and you will see it constructed. Might be a bit of course before that happens.
Please tell that you are going to have help getting them up?
Stay tuned Elaine. Spoiler alert am alive and well after the adventure.
Don, WHERE are you plz? I am looking in McNeal or Douglas? Thoughts? I see Sierra Vista is not too far out. Are you RU-4?
Yes RU-4 in Sierra Vista area.
Question...
You're going to set trusses before framing in the windows and doors ?????
Yes indeed. Windows and doors will be supported with large wooden supportive frames to take the weight off of things and then framed accordingly. Stay tuned to see how it works out! Thanks.
@affordabledesertliving3487
Usually openings are built in from the ground up one piece set on another so every thing is tight and fasteners only hold in place and not for support...
Installing after the fact makes zero gap clearances all but impossible..
but that's just my opinion
@@JamesHollinger-lt8qx Yep building window openings into the wall framing on the ground is the traditional way. That said stay tuned and you will see that I will allow for solid window framing with gap clearances etc. Should be fun! Stay tuned...
@affordabledesertliving3487
I like to see new/different building styles
.. new ideas I haven't seen or thought of....
How many trusses total? Looks like about 16. Do they go every 3 feet?
21 trusses which includes the gable ends. They are placed 24 in on center.
Did you put the trusses up yourself? at 80 lbs. each?
Yep. Stay tuned to see all of that. Thanks.
Who put them up and how much for the whole cost?
They were $1765.00 I installed them myself.
That must be a steel roof, because I wouldn't build a shingle roof with less than a 6 /12 pitch.
Yep galvalumne steel is the goal.
How do you trust other people making your trusses? Hahaha
Made in Canada eh ?
LOL. Yes indeed Tim. Some of that good ol B.C. lumber in those trusses.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Great wood
Did they seem a little sloppy to anyone else or am I too picky?
They were done nicely marilyn. They are done loosely at first on the assembly line and then cleaned up/pounded to look nice and neat further down the assembly line. I missed that on cam. Simply refer to the finished stack outside. Thats what ended up at my home. They were great.
