Don. Please ask for help. Though you figured out a way to do this yourself, nice job, it is safer to have help. It is not a crime to ask for help. Love your videos.
really help from who ? it isnt easy to get help here
I’m impressed Don. Very good job
The levels of ingenuity were very impressive on the trusses installation. From the push poles with gripping hooks, the truss positioning trolleys and the string truss pulley .Very clever ,very inventive and very impressive. Very well done Done .You did yourself proud. Great job.
Thanks Graeme. I was sorry I frightened people and your comments cheered me mate.
Patient, persistent, successful. That's you, Don.
Hey Dom it's Jerry again don't know if you've heard of or can afford this device called simson? ties. There're metal brackets that fasten to the upper part of the wall and then to the rafter, making it easier to install them. They also will supply protection against wind mitigation especially since you live in a wide open area to help prevent again collapse. Doing a great job be careful.
And, very nearly severely injured.
@@JERRY-xb6vy THANKS for your input
Don you really should ask for help or pay someone.....
To quote Sean Penn playing the character Jeff Spicoli in a movie called Fast Times at Ridgemont High--"Just be glad I had fast reflexes!!" The good Lord had your back Don, a little excitement without injury never hurt anyone! I'm looking forward to the next one!
He also said "all I need is cool waves and tasty buds and I'm fine dude"
Don, you are showing all of us over 50's it can be done! Thankyou😊
No question. Fifty is a youngster in my book.
Is there anything in the world you can't manage??? I give you my ful admiration but at the same time my concerning: Please, take care of yourself!
Greetings of a German elderly lady (76) living next to the Northsea not far away from southern Denmark
Thanks for caring Sylvia!
Great work bro! Slow and steady wins.
You might consider a hard hat for working on objects above you. They have saved me injury more than a couple times.
I hope you didn't get too banged up when that truss blew down. You got lucky on that one. I always enjoy your videos.
Angels worked hard to keep me safe. Didnt even have a scratch or bruise.
Orientation is important. Getting that correct critical. By increasing light into the structure in winter and reducing in summer will help keeping the structure temperature regulated
Wow.. Ouch..... I'm glad your ok. Looks like you got all or most of them up and secured to eachother.. I would sure like to see you get more help.. Perhaps we get do a gofundme and we could all pitch in a few bucks to pay for some help. 2 peeps can get alot more done than one.. I'd donate $50.. With winnd like that.. A wind turbine coould come in handy to make some more free energy..
Thanks for the kind comments Offgrid Trucker. So appreciate it!
One-Man-Roofing! Now That's impressive! You always 'figure it out'. When this is finished we're going to have to vote you Teacher of the Year (or years ?? 😆). Addressing the safety issues was very well done, important, sobering.
Thanks for showing , looking forward to the next video
Way to go Don!!! I'll bet you slept well after wrestling those trusses.
Very thankful and yep sleeping well these days.
Geez Don! You are like the cat with 9lives😆
🤣🤣🤣🤣 OMG…This killed me! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Super thankful here.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 you are amazing 🤗
"Holy Cow" Don!! You always amaze me with your work ethic, your common sense attitude and hard work. Won't be much longer... you''ll be in that relaxing position in your comfy chair! Great video! Veteran Charlie.
Every comment is so encouraging Charlie. So appreciate you.
Hi Don! Glad it went well with you and had a flashback when I made a similar mistake in my garage. I was standing on the trusses and had to fine-tune the distances and loosened a bit too much. All the trusses fell like dominoes while I jumped off the roof, but landed just as well. Looking forward to the next video. Stay safe!
Morten I was so cheered by your story. I am thankful I get to continue on with this amazing project.
Don, every desert dweller deserves a worthy nickname. After you took that truss to the head and shoulders, I think you’ve earned the name Ironwood. So glad you came out alright from that frightening and painful experience. Keep up the good work!
Actually I was spared any pain at all. Just unnerved to be honest. I have since changed my work regime to focus much higher on safety.
Amazing, sheer injunuity. Necessity is truly the mother of invention. You need a Superman cape!
Very high praise but undeserved I think. All the best!
I admire you, your something else. Keep up the good work
Many thanks Gail!
For each task after waking in the morning, each person must accept some level of risk. We each chose our own level. Others can disagree but the choice is not theirs. Well Dun!!👍
Thanks a million for the kind comments geezer.
Well that was exciting! Thanks for showing the misses as well as the hits. The way that truss flipped upright when you resolved the puzzle was epic--very satisfying after all the building tension :-) I know you can't do what you are doing without something of a risking soul, and you are brave. You are doing great!
Thanks for your kind words and super support Mareesa! Cheers.
Great achievement Don. I think that in a previous life you may have been foreman on building the Great Pyramid of Giza :)
LOL hilarious! Thanks for watching.
Gosh, that looks dangerous. I was wishing you wore a hardhat 👷♂️
I'm impressed, the wind can be a devil, literally.
Safety first
Good Job!
Canadian real Hercules. Mister Don
Thanks so very much for watching!
This was painful to watch. At least wear a helmet!
Safty - and a Building Buddy! Two important things!
Hi Don,
First, you need a hard hat for your own safety.
Second, you need 12 volt winch from Harbor freight for $54 to lift these trusses. You can stand on the floor on another side and use this 12 volt winch hook up with a pulley on top of 4x4 post to lift these trusses safely. But make sure your 4x4 is taller than the wall. Hope this will help.
Thanks for the kind advice.
Yay the truss install video.
❤❤❤. Ingenuity helps work smarter, not harder.
As small as those trusses are..
Im thinking you might have been able to use a drywall panel hoist to set them. Then used it later to install the drywall
Your ingenuity to figure out how to get things done while your alone is impressive. That truss pulley was clever
Thanks so much Moro.
Painful to watch .... This is a Two Person Job; you easily could end up wit a Life Long Injury
Yep and NOT be able to finish it or even live in it
I agree.
Grateful you are okay. BTDT, and glad the Good Lord spared you. (Just for future reference) When the trusses are equally bundled ,taking a length of cardboard as broad as your overhang and covering that portion with the cardboard then spray painting towards the center( just enough to make a highly visible line, not the complete truss) will save one from climbing up the ladder with a measuring tape repeatedly. Also I am curious if you will be using your truss dolly as a sort of measuring tool for spacing your trusses. Initially that is what I imagined you were doing. God Bless you Don and thank you for your faith and inspiration.
Definitely treated with mercy on this one for sure. Thanks for watching.
Please be safe you shouldn't work alone
Tell that to Kevin McCallister 😅
A few random and spontaneous thoughts as I watched with rapt attention: This is a very impressive truss-installation process. I agree with others who suggest that it's probably wise to make this a two-man job, but it's more fun and admirable to do it as you did - solo! I admit that I was afraid that a falling truss incident would occur. Thankfully, you were not severely injured. I am also curious as to why you are screwing rather than nailing.
I am exceedingly jealous of the opportunity and resources that you have to undertake and succeed in building your home in the perfect place for a monastic-style life, but God calls us all to diverse places to do His work in us and through us. And as He calls us, He equips us, Don, as your videos so aptly reveal. I am glad that you are doing this at your young age.
I am about to turn 74, and I noticed just within the past year that the slightest construction or house-painting tasks that I undertake can wear my body out in ways that are somewhat scary. Basically I can do the job, but the recovery time afterward exceeds the labor time by about 200%, i.e.1 day work, 2 days muscle/body recovery. I still dream big, but now, with naturally and progressively evolving physical limitations, I execute small.
I think I can share with you, however, the sheer joy of accomplishment I am certain that you are experiencing as you dream and achieve your dream. Also, I am glad you have the no-compromise-in-quality tools to do the job (great Table saw and battery powered drill/drivers). I was wondering, however, with your location way out in the desert how you manage to deal with having to make a Home Depot run when a task immediately requires something which you don't have.
And lastly, your videos remind me to pray more frequently for you.
I think you would find, if you keep consistently doing things, that your body would get stronger and you would be able to do more. I built up strengeth over last summer and then quit when fall arrived. I lost all strength and endurance I had gained. I struggle to push myself to keep challenging my body and keep moving.
Hi Tim. Such a treasure to have a long time friend like you praying for me. I often think of you when using ladders. Not very tall compared to the one you were frequently on. You are so right about the sheer joy of accomplishment. From building bird houses and book cases in Canada to my very own home. Definitely a dream come true Tim! Thanks so much for watching.
And for my next trick....
It's all smoke and mirrors with you mate.
I won't tell you how did it, because you're already done!
LOL @ smoke and mirrors.
That's awesome don .... Ur something else brother..
Many thanks Dan. Appreciate you watching.
Yikes! Good thing that truss didn't come down on you too hard. We have crazy wind like that around here as well. Can't do anything but wait til it dies down...😑
Hi Mark. Very fortunate indeed. Wind can be a serious issue here. After that adventure I made a note to stop working whenever any strong breeze comes up. Sometimes I was forced to finish work even before noon. So I set up rules to help with safety issues here.
While I admire you tenacity I can say with some authority ( I"m 77) you're too old to be doing this by yourself.
Thanks for watching. Much appreciate it.
Impressive effort Don well done
Many thanks John!
3: Ask For Help
Don, you sure know how to demonstrate there's more than one way to skin a cat!! But Ouch!!!!!
Thanks Clark! Much appreciate it.
You did it!!! And you learned!. Great work, Don and a fun video. Wish I was there to help you!
Thanks so very much!
Great job Don.
Looking good Don!
you over think it all just put them where they belong (set a block on the top plate as a stop )and roll it up into position and mark them while on the ground for the over hang so you know when they are centered
Yep, he can mark them on the ground AND screw a stop on one end
Please stay safe.
That looked a bit gnarly when the truss fell on you Don, I hope it wasn't too bad of a knock!
Miraculously, praise God, not even a scratch or mark on me.
What is your expected expense on this building?
Great question. About $30,000 complete. About the price of an SUV.
No PPE's Don. Of course trusses are up by now.. Always have someone around at least while you work alone... doing dangerous construction.... like roofing... etc (trusses)
Safety first
Cheers.
Looking good...
I am on the process on buying off grid property in Arizona and I’ll be willing to travel to you and help you for free like be your apprentice ❤🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️
Don, you are scaring the crap out of me!!! For the cost of a slice of desert to park my tiny house on while I'm helping you I would do it for free (after working hours I work remote). Please sir be safe, we don't want anything to happen to you! Reach out to SOMEONE please! ~much love ❤
If we lived closer we’d be willing to help as much as we could.
Please be ever so careful. Sometimes I sit on the edge of my chair & cringe when you do things 🫣🫣
Perseverance for sure 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Thanks for all of your care.
oh Don! My heart skipped a beat when the wind caught the truss. You had wind, wood and gravity all playing against you! Maybe a hard hat.?
your ingenuity knows no bounds!
Ya know I would of NEVER considered building such by myself till I saw / see YOU doing this, BTW, have you thought about setting a stop on one end of those rafters where you won't have to measure each one, nail a block stop on each one BEFORE you put it up
Mr. Adventure! There's an old saying about your head saving, ( or not saving) your feet! There's also a Canadian carpenter who has built a log cabin all by himself BUT he had a winch or two to help him with those heavy logs. Good luck with everything. 😮
As suspected, a lot of work. Have to admire your ingenuity and sticktoity. Glad you're ok.
It's almost painful to watch you try to move those trusses by yourself. I'm glad you didn't break your butt. Do you often see snakes?
I lived in Sierra Vista. The wind is strong due to the location and mountains that surround the area. Constant wind & unpredictable gusts can arise anytime. Follow the local weather. Be smart. Ask for help perhaps Cochise Community College or even Buena High School may have students that need credit for construction projects. Next time you may not be as lucky.
Great Job Don!!!!! I think some of your best attributes is to think, modify, think, modify, and never give up. You truly amaze me! You do your best always. I was a bit stressed in watching, the truss install is no joke for sure. I am very impressed and thankful that you accomplished this task. Looking forward to the next one, and I am taking notes 🥰👋👋👋👍👍👍💥
Thanks for the kind words and support Martha.
The Rarity of One man, using that thing between his ears for something other than keeping his hat out of his eyes, and with the cajones to not live life fearing every damn thing that might could happen is THE most illuminating reality of American society.
One man figures out how to accomplish a three man job by himself... and of course, all those who couldn't even conceive of such a thing will implore him to Stop!
Out on the ranges there are two old , basic concepts. 1. If a man is going to ask for help, he shouldn't start out in the first place. 2. Bow your head, grit your teeth, pull your hat down tight... and Ride into the wind. THIS is where we separate the Cowboys from the men.
Well done old man. Show the weaker sorts how it's Done!
I can't imagine trying to put up trusses by yourself. Please find someone to help you.
Being 66 years old myself I was watching this video as I may have to do the same thing only with a 32' long truss, unless they can find a way to get a small crane into my property. Wind can be really tiresome with anything wood related, always seems catch it like a sail
Impressive ingenuity! Perhaps a Hard Hat should be used on the build site.
I’m so glad you are OK🙏🙏🙏 also Pinky was pretty cool❤
Looking good Don..your persistence is paying off 😁👍
Come on neighbor s local young adults- ever hear about helping others out!
I asked if you have good cell service because I’m reminded of the dangers of people our age working high on ladders in isolated places. I know twice I’ve almost fallen on my head off my RV and I would have been in a pickle if I had been badly hurt.
Yes! And always keep your phone in your pocket!
@@chriswhite2151 Got that right.
Yes always have the cell in my pocket these days.
😎
Dam Don ya should have got some help 😊
Glad you got it done without injury like others have said you need another set of hands for this job all the best to you .
Hay Sparky, glad to see you have some good help on hand. Be safe guys
Looking good. Hope you can get someone to help you.
Too bad your wish list doesn't have a Hard Hat in it or a neck brace : )
Number one should be dont try this by yourself
13:41
Iron Don
Thanks for watching!
Awesome job...Stay safe!
Please hire someone to help you
Don ,Segway truss, using a belt haha.
Don your ideas never stop.
"Bloody hell Don" safety first,
Trusses can be replaced. " You cannot ".
I wish I was closer, I would come and help my friend.
Please be careful l want to see your finished Home.
Simon 😀🇬🇧
Thanks Simon. I have ramped up the safety element of the build.
Nothing will stop DON in this wild desert. Keep up the great creative problem solving and you'll have your trusses up. I love the pink snake, never seen one before. I live 80 miles east of you and it's been really windy here. Can't even use the BBQ! Always makes my day to watch your videos. It's a beautiful desert out where you are, especially at night when it's so dark. Have fun.....
Thank you so much for watching Lawrence.
Don, what persistence, but how scary to watch you do this!
Hopefully you don’t have any more truss projects, but if so, look into some of the barn raising groups in our community out here if you’ve got those bigger projects on deck. Lots of folks understand peoples situations and want to help with manpower.
Glad you were not seriously hurt. I’ve enjoyed keeping up with you these past couple years on your progress.
Thanks so much for your concern.
Oh Don l must ask for your forgiveness bc l realized you meant to show your subs ' the good bad & ugly ' of building your own homestead.
Cheers my youtube content creator. Thanks!
Oh that is real kind and thoughtful Nanny. Please dont worry one bit about it. I have done my best to be accurate showing when I fail and am not careful and when I am happy with success here. Thanks for faithfully watching.
Yay! I am finally caught up to you in real time! I have to laugh - I also love doing builds/reno myself. It's a live-and-learn process, yes?
Yes indeed bit by bit!
SO glad you didn't get hurt Don!!! ... and that you found a way to do it yourself safely!!!! (My friends give me grief for not asking for help and being determined to find ways to do things on my own too. It's out of love and concern, but I do understand your level of determination too. 🥰
Yep, Father in Heaven was super kind to me that day.
Your were lucky that mishap, 'Higher Angels over You' 💚💖🌵Glad to see you are OKay~!
Yes I suspect angels were involved in keeping me safe.
Wow! Glad you’re safe. So good to see someone do this. I’ll be doing it I two years Lord willing. Thank you! We are learning.
Thanks so much for watching.
What brand are your saw horse. Are they sturdy and will not break if cutting heavy stuff. Please be careful doing that by yourself. Be safe.
These are metal folding Bora saw horses. Love them for sure.
I love your ingenuity Don. You are always thinking of a beter way of doing things. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks so much for watching Joe!
I didn't realize something with so many openings would blow over. This is a tease. We know you got them in place; but how did you do it?
Stay tuned...
You are truly ingenious Mr Don! Go get em! I can’t wait to see your beautiful home when u are done!
This must be so self satisfying.
Thanks so much
Be careful mister
Time for a hard hat.
Well it looked like you were using your head on that truss install. I hope you did not end up with a headache or any injuries. It looks like a huge model piece by piece it goes up!
Thanks for caring storagemann. Miraculously I didnt even have a scratch or mark anywhere. Yep going up bit by bit!
Should have diagonal braces on them walls, or the whole thing is going to come down. 20 going hit a little harder 😢
Should have a tight string line on ridge line. Line up peaks. May need to move walls in or out.
oh my gosh... that scared me.... please see if you can find someone to help with this... now that we are older, we don't heal as fast from bumps and bruises... I rely on Arnica Montana x30 to help with any bumps bruises sprains or strains... it's great... helps with swelling too... mom is in her mid 80s and I'm in my 60s... moms balance is bad, so she topples quite often... so she lives by it too... be safe and healthy.... Deb from South Dakota
Thanks for your support and concern Deb!
