Danny and Joey D.'s album "Relentless" is a superb album that brings out the best in both artists. Many years ago at a gig in Denver, I asked Joey about that album and playing with Danny and he said, "Oh man, that guy..."
That's one of my "desert island" CDs. Heard Gearheads on local public radio on my way home from work and was astonished. Speaking to no one, I said "Who the hell is this guy?!?!" Amazing.
I could literally listen to this forever. Danny was great in so many ways, but the cleverness of his phrasing was my very favorite thing about him. I think this video shows that well.
These little clams that happen (another at the 9 minute and 25 second mark) seem to me to be an indicator of Danny's discomfort at times in the studio. The lines he flubs would NEVER happen in a live room. Unfortunately a lot of truly brilliant musicians tense up when that red light goes on and sadly this can be a sign of feeling inferior (if you can believe THAT) I can just imagine the thoughts going through the head of the world's greatest guitar player. " damn it what the hell is WRONG with you? You don't DESERVE to be playing with these guys"..and on and on. The perfectionist can never attain happiness and in the end Dan probably couldn't take the pressure of not being able to deliver the kind of performances that HE felt measured up. While the rest of the guitar playing world fell to their knees in stunned awe and praise.
Did this trac make it on the Cd? I was in there mixing a live CD with Charlie Pastorfield and the Believers. The first UPS truck arrived with the boxes of Relentless cd's.There was a typo on the first run.Timm Came in to pick them up.We were blown away!.
I have this album/CD and have jammed along with it hours on end. I do not recall this track. I play harmonica, 45 years and was full-time pro at 20. Started in Bluegrass, then Honky-Tonk, had a Swing Dance 7 piece Jazz/Blues band for 10 years too. Just spent 7 years in Austin, now in San Diego. Had albums by both Joey & Danny G. so, this was a great find and many great grooves they play on this one.
the master (among many other great players), but his wit and humour and technique and sense for groove and melody was out-of-this-world... incredible, that this genius committed suicide...
Would like to know "the rest of the story" on this track that didn't make the CD. Being the perfectionist, was it cut live w JD and overdubbing his part to get a better take?
This track and a few others didn't make the album. There was talk of a follow-up, but that never happened, sadly. Danny did overdubs on a few songs from this project, but we all lobbied for the live takes. Joey was heavy into the live takes, as was I. In the attempt to put out the playing Danny liked best, there is at least one tune where they cut between entire takes in mastering, I believe, making for some interesting cymbal changes, to say the least! I mentioned it to Danny when I heard the final masters (I'd been away producing an album for another artist and wasn't there for that stage of the project) and he said, with a big ol' smile on his face "well, you weren't here!" Man, I loved his sense of humor! Cheers!
@@TimmBieryMusic I discovered this video yesterday evening, the melody was in my head as I woke up. It's a shame this one never got released, cause it's one of the most beautiful grooves I've heard in my life. The drums are absolute perfection too. Cheers :)

Its a shame Joey passed so young.
I love how there’s always new videos of Danny emerging. Thank you!!
Two of the best musicians ever to join forces....they'll be missed
That’s my favorite guitar player
Two greats, each gone way to soon. RIP.
You can see how hard he was on himself and deeply seriously he took his music. Thank you for this clip of a truly one of a kind virtuoso at work. ..
Spot on Christopher, well said and noted. Genius artist at work. Salute Danny!

MY MAN! Excellent reaction to some sour notes. THAT is what a perfectionist does.
Won't even PRETEND. "I meant to do that."

Wow, Poinciana!
9:25 he hits that note and is like "ooops, done with this take". Perfectionist
I believe the tune is Poinciana.

Can't help but wonder what kind of anguish a talent like his would make him go out the way he did, smh.

It's Ahmad Jamal's composition - Panoiciana, not sure about spelling it right way.

Hot Rod Guitar the Danny Gatton anthology double album. 2nd disc has all the Joey DeFrancesco collaboration stuff. Absolutely Phenomenal.

I think about that every time I watch his videos here on TH-cam..... amazing and awe inspiring.... but always tinged with sadness...
Hard to be a genius in this retarded world..

This tune isn‘t on the album „Relentness“!
The guitar needed that cigarette, he wasn't playing guitar he was channelling from spiritual realms.
B3 doubles as a buffet table
haha! Yes. It is a beautiful, rich sound
Unbelievable
My favorite guitarist for 20 years now along with Wes & joe
Wonder why no sustain on that tele?
Newer one..he traded his 53' for a vintage Ford car
:)
No sound?
I mean George Benson better be like 👍
Eating....a lot!😂
Poinciana
No sound lolhahahaha
Sound starts about 2:20? or so..worth sitting through the silence..audio cuts out at end too
IMO it would have sounded a lot better on a non Tele.
