Danny does not cease to amaze me. That man was born to play the guitar. Musical genius. He literally copied that fiddler's style and played it back to him on the guitar. Unfreakingreal. Wow. Long live Danny Gatton
Danny was the last word as far as the electric guitar is concerned as I don't believe anyone else ever attained such undeniable mastery of the fretboard and knowledge of American roots, jazz blues and popular music. At the same time, what an absolute treat for me to see him play with the great Roger Miller whose natural swing and lyrical genius made me a fan over 50 years ago. These two greats have left us now: Roger in 1992 and Danny 2 years later, a fact that makes this recording all the more valuable. Rest in peace guys.
Very well said. He is definitely on the short list of greatest mastery of the instrument of any human to live. Wow they don't even show you the band through the end...right hand of God...that hybrid picking stuff...total mastery
As Steve Vai said, “I don’t know who the greatest guitarist of all time is, but I know there was nobody better than Danny Gatton!” That isn’t an exact quote but close
Although Danny Gatton was an innovative stylist of rock blues and country guitar, it's debatable that he was the greatest who ever lived. I would submit that many others were great stylists, but also great technical players with a deep grasp of music theory. Check out the TH-cams of other unsung greats like Ted Greene or Lenny Breau. Both had such deep technical abilities that they could, at will recreate the stylings of others as well as play in their own styles. In fact some of their styles of play are admired by other guitar maestros of many music genres. I'd say Danny's high mark of performance came when recorded the "Relentless" album with Hammond B3 genius, Joey DeFrancesco. IMO, Joey's encyclopedic knowledge of music theory and huge chops pushed Danny to play at a higher level out of necessity to keep up. Here's a TH-cam link from their take on the Wayne Shorter tune, "Chess Players": th-cam.com/video/yWLrsb080-A/w-d-xo.html

Holy cow, all these years and I didn't know Roger played fiddle. Came here looking at Danny's guitar playing and SHAZZAM! I'm a fiddle player and I LOVE the way Roger wrapped up OJS.
On this day, there is absolutely nobody who can pick the way Danny did. The closest guy I know is Josh Smith, but even he, recognizes that some of what Danny could do is out of reach. His right hand technique is just out of this world. But one should not be only lured to his dexterity. He also knew harmony and melody and his musical ability was border less. He could combine rockabilly and jazz, blues, rock, what not.... as often in this world, geniuses often have other demons. I regret that he chose to part from life.
Josh Smith??? i guess you never heard of Scotty Anderson? the album triple stop is an amazing gem. the song jupiter stop does really start with a gatton like intro. Artistry in Rhythm is my absolute favorite from him. let me know what you think :D
Priceless👍 Grew up in Early/mid 60s with my Dads Roger Miller Records in the house. Roger was incredible song writer and performer- and throw Gatton in the Mix --Wow!!!!! No doubt Junior Brown got his inspiration from Danny! Danny was in the Band Ronnie and the Offbeats/ in DC. They cut one 45 Rpm -- Beggar-man/ flip was Trouble in mind! That was in 1959’ Danny He was 14 years old.
So often Gatton would take off on something you thought for sure was was going to crash.... but he'd somehow bring it back in for a safe landing. Incredible ❤️
He's a guitar player's player thats why. Anyone who is a serious player knows Gatton, and Lenny Breau, Joe Pass, Django,Wes, Tarrega, Segovia and countless others. You know.... the typical run of the mill God's of Guitar.
Big fat country shuffle, love it, 2nd one Orange, played many times with Dick Soleburg on fiddle, love how Gatton plays in boxes, when I started they said open positions only , good stuff
Miller was quite the hambone, but he wrote more great songs than you could shake a stick at. Gatton found him disrespectful to his sidemen, and he hated playing for him.
There’s a difference between getting “high” and taking just enough, of whatever(Roger was known to take uppers mostly, often combined with some downers to soften the edges of the uppers, and I’d reckon some pain pills too) to provide a great performance for your audience. Roger always did. He apparently gave up the pills in the early-mid 1970’s, and suffered a dry spell in his writing as a consequence. I’m sure he got back on them though, it’s not easy performing like that. I saw one performance from the mid 70’s I think on Ralph Emery’s show at the time, and he seemed like he’d had some quaaludes or something, was very loose and hilarious. Always was hilarious though, one of a kind and one of my favorite writers and singers of all time…I think he’s often underrated.
that man left Roger Miller speechless on the Orange Blossom Special.....gnarliest guitar run ever. Never will or has been a picker like Danny Gatton.

Well, maybe Jimmy Bryant?
Both incredible
Danny Gatton was a genius on guitar!
That guy playing the Fender Telecaster.......that’s Danny Gatton. He’s the greatest guitarist who’s ever lived. In my very humble opinion.
Not an opinion but a fact ! Danny Gatton is the Greatest!
@@hammertownpavao yes it is an actual fact 😎

When Danny stared Roger down, you knew it was over.

Nor did I! Wow!
I didn't know Roger could saw down on a fiddle either. Apparently he didn't care that we didn't know 🤷
It was a little bit of magic

Redd Volkaert
Scotty is up there but not as complete as Danny. Danny could play any genre he wanted at the highest level.
Wow. Gave me a new respect for Roger. I have always had the greatest respect for Danny
i uncontrollably laugh at Danny's playing. It's way beyond good
I have the same reaction!
Danny Gatton was the Grand Master of the Telecaster.
Danny and Roger Miller... words don't do it justice. Many thanks.
Any guitarist who gets on stage with Danny has got to have balls of steel and they better bring their A game cause he'll embarass you if you dont
The Humbler.
Danny Gatton the master of the Telecaster!
Great stuff and the whole band was killing!
Many don't know this but Danny could play fiddle alot better than alot of fiddle players.
Wow. Never knew that one.

Gatton dialed it down and can in no way be restrained. Even Miller about pooped himself.
He plays so far out of the box us mortals are just left in his magic dust
Man can only come so close to God.
HE PROBABLY NEVER EVEN PRACTICED HE JUST TINKERED WITH HIS CARS

Not sure Dan ever crashed.

I'd say that very few people knew who Danny was. Sad,sad.

Danny spanking that Tele !!!
That Special had two locomotives
That was quite an ending to Orange Blossom Special by Roger. Was a fitting ending to Maestro Gatton.

Holy crap, Roger is smokin the orange blossom special?
Thanks so much for posting, Bob. Full of awesome!
reallyreally good
Chapter 25 in 'Dang Me' covers this event. Found this book on kindle unlimited, vg.
Danny was quick. That's for sure.
thats some cool stuff babba! Terentino on guitar! who knew heyy?
One of our greatest👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
I learned two things from watching this - Invitation To The Blues isn't a Harlan Howard song, and Roger Miller was a really good fiddle player.
King of the Road!!~
Hahahaha! So damn awesome
Hot damn just smoking that caster
I never knew Roger played the fiddle
Danny was given permission to NOT wear blue suspenders
Would you upload "Roger Miller & Earl Thomas Conley - Austin City Limits 1983"?
Do you have the whole show? If so please post.
Yes please!!!!
As far as the tele goes its you and only you and you can fuck up whenever you want
How is it that Danny can play so fast and clearly with those sausage fingers? I don't know, just ask Billy Joel he'll know.
Joamets.......i think he is up there. Sturgills lead guitar for a bit. Gatton was awesome.
Who is that on piano?

It's a good bet Roger was high during this. Him and Waylon loved to pop pills together.........
