White Raven

- An extremely rare white raven (Corvus corax ) watches traffic pass by in mid-town Anchorage, Alaska. The raven owes its distinct look to leucism, a condition that results from a loss of pigmentation due to an absence of cells that produce melanin. Scientists report that a bird has a roughly 1 in 30,000 chance of being born with the condition.
Congrats, you found a shiny.
But did he catch it?
@@alphadraconis9397he left it in peace!
That's full odds! He better catch it!

Fun fact: in Russian, a "white crow" is whoever you would call a "black sheep" in English
in Polish a white raven is something very rare but in a good meaning. Like a very prized item
Ambos tienen sentido :v
Not only Russian
In Portuguese a white fly is someone who's unique with remarkable skills
in German, a colorful dog is an odd fella
you can already tell how intelligent these creatures are just by looking at how they observe everything
They are intelligent, but how do you tell the difference between "observing everything" and "looking around for food"?
@@Mythraenravens do in fact observe their surroundings and everything around them, i’m pretty sure it’s proven
@@forsenju And, I'm ready to believe a scientist has means of determining that...
But, I didn't ask a scientist.
And, while my comment expresses disbelief, if the OP can satisfactorily answer the question, I'm not going to be upset about it.
All birds observe everything
@@snickerswo1f519Yeah, and the head tilting thing that makes it looks curious -- probably what this commenter is latching unto, if unconsciously -- is actually a way to track sounds in vertical space by positioning one ear above the other. In humans, that gesture signifies curiosity, but in birds (and cute puppies) it's purely functional, so this may be a case of good old fashioned anthropomorphism

So cool. I wonder if that raven gets treated differently from other ravens
I bet he does. Animals tend to be even worse racists than humans.

Treated differently by the black revens you mean? I think they get used to it eventually. I have seen a fully white pigeon in the neighborhood where it was extremely rare, probably escaped from a cage, initially the other pigeons behaved as though the white pigeon is sick and kept their distance. It was funny to watch them move away as it tried to get closer, like two same sides of a magnet repelling each other lol. Eventually the white pigeon seemed to have found a mate that wasn't afraid of it, and over time the other pigeons stopped being freaked out by it. It was fascinating to observe.
I've NEVER seen a white raven before! How brilliant and majestic.
Same, I'm even more surprised by this than when I found out about white peregrine falcons or peacocks lol but compared to those two, this is the ugly duckling version lol still, very cool and awesome. This is why education about animals is so important 😊
Yeah mostly they are killed by the other raven's for what I know
Almost every animal can be white as long as they're able to catch albinism they can turn white
white ravens quoth like "always less"

took me a minute to get this lol

"White raven" in Polish means something really rare, usually reffered to books and later also to recordings and movies.

in english the term "white whale" is sometimes used to refer to something that is nearly impossible to achieve or obtain

What a beautiful and rare raven! Leucism in birds can make them so unique and stunning, especially in a species that's usually known for having completely black plumage. Such a gorgeous raven.
How do u tell albinism and leucism apart?
@@tias512Leucism will, for the most part, only affect certain parts of the plumage. In total Leucism, the bird’s eyes will still be a normal colour instead of reddish or pinkish.
@@MonolophosaurusEnj0yer oh! Ty.
I think, in this case the raven is albino. You can see red in the eye when it turns its head sideways
The bird has leucism, as is evidenced in the desc as well as the dirtier coloratiom and the eyes being darker
It arrived from the Citadel this morning- the white raven. Winter is here.
Came here to say this 😂
And from now until it ends, the Starks are liars!
Actually, I guess the next winter is still coming, even while this one is here.
BUT, what if it never ends?! Aha!
excuse me? its spring
I hope it's able to live a healthy life, not just physically but also socially.
Pretty sure this particular bird is several years old. There's a few videos of him.
It should. This one is not albino - it has leucism.
An albino raven caught on camera! So beutiful...!
This crow is not albino, it's leucistic. There is a difference.
@@emergencyfood3568 really!? I didn't know! What is the difference?
@@mariadim2809 Albino: full loss of pigmentation
Leucism: less pigmentation overall
A way to tell is their eye colour. If it's standard, they've got Leucism; if it's pink, they're albino

I’m so glad that you confirmed what my gut was telling me. I was sitting here scratching my head, thinking to myself why aren’t his eyes red, like albino rats have? And why does he have a bit of black on the top of its beak? That doesn’t seem like a normal albino.
I didn’t know about luecism, so thanks for teaching me something new! And I’m glad that I did know about red eyes being the factor of albinoism! Now the only question is why do albino humans have blue eyes instead of red?

what is that?
It's white raven...caw ...cawww..😊
I've never seen one! How beautiful 😍
What a fine handsome boy! ♥️
I hope it lives long and free, and passes on its unique genes to future ravens!
the reason ravens are black is because it absorbs the heat better when its sunny so being a white raven might make you a bit colder but idk
There’s a reason why albino animals don’t survive as good as animals with normal colors
If it could have happened already, it would have.
what a cool bird!
Your Cravens, White Raven. Have left their writing on the wall.

Honestly, I wish I could tell all the birds how gorgeous they are, if that’s not weird.
This bird just destroyed the Raven Paradox. 😂
What's that?
@@VaporRoninThe short version:
- All ravens are black. While this cannot be proven 100%, every black raven is evidence that strengthens the assertion.
- The equivalent of the above is All non-black items are not-ravens. All non-black non-ravens are evidence that strengthens this second assertion.
If the second assertion is strengthened then it strengthens the first assertion. Therefore, one can "prove" all ravens are black by looking at a multitude of items, and never having seen an actual raven!
The humor here is that the paradox is destroyed by disproving the first assertion.
For the record, the raven paradox can be used to "prove" things that are true, false, or unknowable.

They say it only takes one white crow to disprove everything, and you found a white raven, so...
Rarest bird ever on planet Earth. Look for sasquatch next.
Cool. Hope it still has whatever the typical lifespan of a raven is.
Leucistic birds often have health issues, with a shorter lifespan, because it's sometimes not albinism, but some disorder that causes a lack of pigment. But...
I watch the live cam of Angel the Leucistic Red Tailed Hawk, and she seems fine and healthy, although some disruption of breeding this year. Last year she and her mate fledged a fine, normally plumed eyas. She's not fully albino, and likely won't pass on whatever has caused her lack of pigment. But she's gorgeous, and even molted whiter this year.
I saw a crow with alternating black and white feathers in it’s wings. I swear he knew he was beautiful, he flew up off the ground and flared out his wings just to display itself.
Thats a piedbald crow! Stunning!
Great! My shamanic name is Whiteraven. I‘ve never seen a white raven, but black ones are my friends💖thank you so much😍

Rise of the White Raven
Wow you’re very lucky to see a white raven! Most don’t make it into adulthood as they are often eaten by their parents when young. And the ones that do survive are ostracized from other ravens and often bullied. So they are mostly on their own for the rest of their lives. It’s unfortunate, but they are such a sight to behold.
Whoa, neat! Special little fellow!

Poor baby is so dirty. He cant clean his head and the other ravens must not be helping, meaning he/she probably doesnt have a partner to help.
I think that may just be a few dark feathers above the dark areas of his beak, rather than dirt. It doesn't look to me like he has red eyes, so he's not an albino crow, just leucistic.
I do wonder how well this bird fares in socialization. Since they're extremely smart animals, I could imagine that other ravens still recognize this one as kin, at least I hope so.
Thankfully no, the darker parts are not dirt! There might be some staining, but largely it’s just color variations in the feathers themselves. Also thankfully, this raven has a small flock that it gets along with nicely. Additionally, to my knowledge, this raven doesn’t have a partner yet because it’s still a juvenile (
