One of my biggest problem is that, if I start studying the night before the exam, since there is no time left I just HAVE TO focus and do things super fast. But if i start a lot earlier, than i just keep gettting distracted by literally everything and the time I spent the learn the same amount thing at least doubles up comparing to the amount I'd do at the last minute. If only I can study THAT focused before-hand, my life would be a lot better.
Try to visualize what you're studying. Fantasize about your study material. Surround yourself with things that can't easily distract you and visualize yourself explaining what you're studying to other people.
An extension of this that I really like is the the idea that you can handle anything -- anything -- for ten seconds. Even if it's literal torture, you can handle it for just ten seconds. And then at the end of those ten seconds, you can handle it for just ten more seconds. And then keep doing that until the job is done.
One strategy that helped me in the past, was making multiple theme based to-do-lists (that are due in the next few weeks) and decide at the beginning of the weeks, which of them to tackle this week (categorized in top priority/ priority and work/personal tasks). That just shrinks down the to-do-list drastically. Also for not so important tasks: Instead of planning a specific time for a specific task, I just plan "to-do-time" and choose a to-do from the list. That only works if the tasks aren't urgent and none of the tasks is especially unpleasant.
That New York Times article was really effective for me too, Can't say I have stopped procrastinating but I am trying to be aware of my behaviour and thought patterns and not fall into the pitfalls that just perpetuates the vicious cycle. BTW, I really liked your laid back and comfortable attitude in this video.
*Also: make a ToDo-list for the day!* I graduated last Monday and now all the structure in my life (going to the internship, etc.) is gone. Making a To Do-list for the day really helps me to remind me of all the things that I'm supposed to do, and it satisfies me when I can strip a task of my list.
My own way to cope with my procrastination is to tell my future plan to my friends and sometimes family members too if the plan is important to me. I don't like nagging or interference. These make me feel pressured. But I usually break the procrastination by using 'peer pressure'
Mate, it's probably undiagnosed ADHD if it's "chronic." I didn't know until last year that that was the name of a lot of my issues. I was born in 1991.
yeah procrastination can be a single act, he says it's not, but it literally is. It's not a medical term it's an everyday English word and something everyone does chronic procrastination... better check out adult ADHD symptoms and just see ADHDers have time blindness and a lot of difficulty assigning weight and priority to tasks, they also end up interrupting themselves in the middle of a task and going off to do something else, because, apart from super urgent things, everything *feels* equally important and you end up doing 10% of 100 things, which is especially bad because you are extra bad at task-switching because that's an executive function too Also you don't get to "relax afterwards with the satisfaction that you did what you needed to do" because you don't get that satisfaction to begin with and also you always take on too much or you left too much so there's no relaxing afterwards because there's always more to do
Something I've been doing for school which has really helped is a 10-5-10 routine. Every day, it doesn't matter when, set aside half an hour. Study for 10 minutes, rest for 5 minutes, and study for another 10 minutes. If you feel like you can do more, rest 5 and study 10 more. And repeat until you find a good place to stop, or until you get tired. After those initial 2 sessions, you would be surprised how much more you can do with that momentum. And even if you only do two, you can cover a _lot_ of ground between exams. And using those 5 minutes to do something like pick up a few clothes or do a couple of sit-ups is super helpful in getting other essential tasks done at the same time, while still telling your brain that you're taking a break from the _actual_ chore at hand. Once you're in the mindset of studying, nothing else actually feels like a chore, because it's not what you're 'doing' right now. The best part: This can be adapted to suit literally anything you need to do.
i have a couple of ways i avoid procrastination, 1) i text or tell a friend i am going to do something, accountability 2) i watch youtube videos or listen to music during the task 3) i start, as in if I'm on the couch and need to do the kitchen, i focus on getting up and walking over to the counter 4) devide the task into easier bits 5) promise myself a reward after the task these don't always work but it does help me a bit
Hey, I heard about something called a "commitment contract"... To me it seems like this could help with avoiding work and tasks too... It's based on the fact that loss means more to us than equal gain and that an immediate response is more likely to change your behaviour than something you get to or achieve in some time... This was part of this video too... It would be great to have a video about this topic

The way I’ve always gotten around procrastinating is something I read in an article when I was last minute studying for a test. All it said was “to help with procrastination turn on a speaker and listen to a calm instrumental such as fur elise, listening to an instrumental will avoid the desire to sing the song however still gives the auditory stimulus that activities such as playing video games or watch TV gives allowing you to stay focused on the pleasure of the sound while not being worried about missing a visual queue such as lyrics on a screen or the blood splatter of shooting a zombie.”
I think this is one of the best procrastination videos I've ever seen. It really dives into the science of procrastination and the different ways that it can occur. You deserve more subscribers.
As we humans tend to be creatures of habit, the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. Like another comments I've read, I would set out to do a task early, and get easily distracted, or have writer's block. I have either been very lucky that my procrastination has yielded good grades, or I actually do perform better under pressure. I have no idea how to rationalize it, but I have been unable to break this habit because the results are still favorable.
I completed my honors thesis as an undergrad and learned so much. Even though I left due to unforeseen circumstances, this channel makes me feel like I belong.
I hear other people talk about procrastinating school work and then finishing it all the day before it's due. For me I would procrastinate until I thought "welp, too late to get it done now" and just didn't do it.
The conscientious thing. Only allowing myself to eat, sleep or have a social life (am teenage girl and crush on my friend. Hanging out with crush sure is a motivation when I can agree with him to hang out with me after I finished it. Using em hormones to my benefit) once I finished that task. I get around one or 2 tasks done a day.
ADHD and Bipolar here and as such, procrastination is a huge problem, despite hyperactivity making up for some of it at the expense of my health. 'Banging things out' early to then guilelessly enjoy pleasures is intrinsically motivating. During Covid, focusing on my new long-term goals and vision for my life helps motivate me to grind through the day-to-day tasks. I hope that Covid can bring inspiration to re-evaluate quality of life and what we can do to to achieve those visions. Also, I just subscribed! I heard of you from Medlife Crisis :)
One thing that helps with the last point of "be aware of what you're doing/be your own mother" is journaling. I use a home-made variant of CGPGrey's Theme Journal (he has a really good video on what that entails) where I write about what I did that day, set 3-5 goals for tomorrow (as big as cleaning entire rooms and as small as having a shower, doesn't matter.), and I have a page where I keep track of things I try to do every day. I moved into my current place about 5 years ago, and was pretty depressed at the time. I spent about 4 of those years coasting through life doing just enough housework to not poison myself with the kitchen or trip over stuff going from bed to computer. Then I started journalling, which I was going to do starting 2022 but didn't actually get set up until mid April. Yes, that's how bad my procrastination habit was. Within a month of starting that, setting goals as tiny as "spend 10 minutes sorting stuff on the floor" I had my computer room, bedroom, kitchen and bathrooms cleaner than they had been since maybe a month after I'd moved in, I'd gotten help for the back pain that had been bugging me for years, and I am, in general, far more together than I've been since I was in university, and probably more than that.
hi, I just discovered you channel and it's pretty cool, so thank you very much! For my experience of experienced procrastinator, I'd say that planning is a great part of avoiding procrastinating. The night before, setting goals for the day ahead is very important, deciding in advance that I am gonna do certain things instead of doing others (or none at all) helps me get things done. And the reward is the satisfaction of having done those task, and taking them off the to-do list. Also if you are your own boss, and work from home, like me, please get dressed, that helps a lot. And last is having a well set routine, like waking up at the same time everyday, then walk the dog, then exercise, then have breakfast and shower, and then you can finally start working because everything else is out of the way. Also keep your phone out of the way, and put on some music or a podcast. I mean, it works for me, most of the time ;)
I use a study hall discord server (found on the getstudying subreddit) to screenshare my work with others who are also trying to study. I also compete in pomodoro competitions!
I have a few online calendars synced across all my devices where I organize everything I need/want to do. This might not be easy to set up for everyone but it helps me a lot with getting stuff done, even more than a todo list I used to use.

Haha thanks so much for the video. Everytime I procrastinate, I will watch this to stop. As a psychology grad student, I'm well aware when and why I procrastinate. However, as mentioned in the video it is really hard to change habits even when you know that they harm you. I have some metacognitive strategies (or say cognitive strategies) to cope with it. The moment I realize that I delay my responsibilities for nonsense, I remove the nonsense where I cannot reach it before I finish whatever I have to do. What is removing? For example, I'm playing Football Manager and I love playing it. Thus, it is really hard for me to choose anything over it. I send copies of my save files to a friend, delete my own copies and tell her not to send them back before I send my freshly written proposal for exchange. So, my desire to play football manager becomes a reward for writing my proposal. By doing so, not only I remove the game from my sight, I also use it as means of extra motivation to do what I normally don't like to do. Cheers =)
My way of procrastination is watching youtube videos on subjects I'm vaguely interested in but know I will never pursue a career in or anything to give myself the feeling of false progress by learning information, but not by actually studying hard just by watching an entertaining vide- shit.
@@dutchik5107 same, at least for the most part. It gets a bit challenging once things get too messy since things will just mysteriously begin to go missing at that point.
I find that many times the longer I wait to accomplish certain activities, the better I eventually perform at them. This is especially true in making important decisions or in creative projects. Without actually consciously thinking about them, my sub-conscience mind tends to figure things out in for the better in time, eventually arriving at a sort of "viola" moment. Of course, it means I do lots of things at the eleventh hour and finish just in the nick of time. But, in the end I tend to feel my results are almost always better than they would have been had I not procrastinated, and instead jumped immediately into the task.
Interesting because I've always though that I was a master procrastinator but after watching this video, I realize that I'm not. I tend to be extremely reactive on things that HAS to be done. For exemple, I can't stand to leave the dishes undone. In fact, it's borderline the other way around, sometimes I start doing it as I finish eating because I just want to be done with it asap. Ironicaly, one thing that I tend to procrastinate about are social medias. I have a lot of friends who ask me to leave more comments on their Facebook, Instagram or whatever pages but I just find that being a massive waste of time so, yeah, I procrastinate those things...
Thank you ! Wow....bro ....just wow...... This is such a great presentation. It was not rude and yet so personal from a completely stranger on the internet. (Loved the stairs setup and cozy touches!) This topic must be widely discussed by people in our society. Since everyone experiences procrastination at some point. This is a great tool to remind us how procrastination works , may be that helps to break the cycle .
Every week I write out what I’m going to do for my classes and plan everything out and every time I end up just putting everything off to the weekend 😓
I’m starting to think that autism-spectrum disorder can be misdiagnosed with personality disorders, like schizoid and avoidant disorder... How would I know if my personality disorder puts me on the autism spectrum? Are they often mistaken for one another? And what is the rate of comorbidity between these conditions?
The self conditioning sometimes is useful. Counting down from 5 and you have to start doing the thing at 1. You start with things you have no trouble with and make it a habit and then slowly add things you have a harder time starting.
Sometimes you have to count out loud because it can help break the brain idle mode process. Sometimes just singing out loud our talking yourself through in of itself will get your brain into a more active mode making it easier to get going. (you can talk to your pet if that helps or a stuffed animal)
I’m a perfectionist person who loves to work under pressure if i don’t have LOAD OF WORK AND ONE DAY TO DO THEM ALL I won’t do them whatsoever. I sometimes be writing an essay and if I don’t like what I’m writing i just leave the paper till the last day and start stressing out because I didn’t do it before
This is probably not the answer you want to hear but this is just who you are and you are watching this video right? This is the first step to feeling more calm with yourself!
I tried several thing to stop procrastinating, but it either didn't last or I couldn't even start doing them. So what you do when you feel you tried everything and there is nothing left?
Hmm for me I don’t always think it’s procrastination.. my body just really wants to rest.. my body recently has been going through a lot of sensory information.. and stress so the next day I just feel exhausted.. and want to treat myself to some relax times.. but I also put some priorities over others like my brain was like “hey don’t you want to exercise, JUST DO IT!” and I do it but my aunt gets frustrated coz I haven’t yet cleaned the bench or locked the door..
lol, I literally procrastinated on watching this video after I open it since I know the truth unfold in the video will make me feel bad about procrastinating.
And actually, some you are just worthless. So, sit back, relax, and just let it go...let it... I should write a song about that...”Sit back, relax and...quit” 🎵 🎶
"Self efficacy" Whoops. I currently hold a 4.0 GPA (greater than 80% average) and now I absolutely can't go any lower than that. I'm procrastinating and terrified that my grade is going to go any lower than that... because that makes a lot of sense... right? (Also have ADHD, Autism, and mild OCD.... yay....)
Or procrastinate productively. I used to procrastinate by drinking and playing computer games, now I procrastinate by studying and coding. I still drink and play computer games, but not nearly as much as I used to

ADHDers have time blindness and a lot of difficulty assigning weight and priority to tasks, they also end up interrupting themselves in the middle of a task and going off to do something else, because, apart from super urgent things, everything *feels* equally important and you end up doing 10% of 100 things, which is especially bad because you are extra bad at task-switching because that's an executive function too

I got a procrastination ad about procrastination in this video
Thank you !
Wow....bro ....just wow......
This is such a great presentation.
It was not rude and yet so personal from a completely stranger on the internet.
(Loved the stairs setup and cozy touches!)
This topic must be widely discussed by people in our society.
Since everyone experiences procrastination at some point.
This is a great tool to remind us how procrastination works , may be that helps to break the cycle .
Liking this and I have always thought they are self-hate, thyroid deficiency, lack of organization skills, comfort with victim mentality.
I thought I have a problem with doing stuff LATER , but when I saw how bad it is in my friends than I realized it’s not that bad in me
The self conditioning sometimes is useful.
I NEED THAT NEURD SHIRT!!!!!
As I was watching this Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) was singing "A Spoonful of Sugar" in my head.
I’m a perfectionist person who loves to work under pressure if i don’t have LOAD OF WORK AND ONE DAY TO DO THEM ALL I won’t do them whatsoever. I sometimes be writing an essay and if I don’t like what I’m writing i just leave the paper till the last day and start stressing out because I didn’t do it before
I am diagnosed w ocd , i am obsessed w making routines and organizing.
I'm stil a procrastinator
Why? someone tell me pls
This is probably not the answer you want to hear but this is just who you are and you are watching this video right? This is the first step to feeling more calm with yourself!
I love your shirt!!! Where did you get it?
It’s actually one we designed ourselves! Check out below the video and there should be a section of all sorts of merch.
@@neurotransmissions I actually didn't see it on your website
Hey! So somehow this shirt disappeared from the store. We'll re-add it later today and let you know!
@@neurotransmissions Thank you so much!!!
It's back up now! Here's the direct link: teespring.com/neurd-pride
Saw this video in the feed yesterday and though... meh, I'll watch it tomorrow :P
I procrastinated a dozen times before completing the video
watching "how to stop procrastination" in order to procrastinate :-/ :(
I even procrastinate with finishing my backlog of games in my Steam library by watching videos about procrastination.
I tried several thing to stop procrastinating, but it either didn't last or I couldn't even start doing them. So what you do when you feel you tried everything and there is nothing left?
Thank you
This looks interesting, I'm gonna put it into my "watch later" playlist
Hmm for me I don’t always think it’s procrastination.. my body just really wants to rest.. my body recently has been going through a lot of sensory information.. and stress so the next day I just feel exhausted.. and want to treat myself to some relax times.. but I also put some priorities over others like my brain was like “hey don’t you want to exercise, JUST DO IT!” and I do it but my aunt gets frustrated coz I haven’t yet cleaned the bench or locked the door..
Meds can be helpful for some.
Did not procrastinate to subscribe👍
Even tho, watching this instead of doing the thing needing to be done...
Watching this video to procrastinate
lol, I literally procrastinated on watching this video after I open it since I know the truth unfold in the video will make me feel bad about procrastinating.
omg I was literally procrastinating while reading the article
Yeah, change is tough - especially when you have to realize that you're the bad influence in your life - but I needed to hear this. Thanks!
I feel like most of my life is procrastinating rather than being productive. LOL.
beautiful!
Such an effective content. Didn't even complete and started doing stuff. (No I didn't)
Me: ight time to start studying
My brain: but like...
How about mine craft for 9 hours a day??
BOOM, I subscribed before you asked, hehe, jokes on you, I don't procrastinate anymore :W
0:54 nice pinch
I was hoping there’d be an RL fan watching somewhere!
**procrastinates doing dishes and homework by watching a video about how to stop procrastinating**
The pleasure principle was used by Tony Robbins and he just ran with it.
And actually, some you are just worthless. So, sit back, relax, and just let it go...let it... I should write a song about that...”Sit back, relax and...quit” 🎵 🎶
Funny that this gets recommended from my Watch Later list
I love the dramatizations 😂
Did you hit your head on the stairs at the end?
I procrastinated on watching this video
jk somehow I'm the first one
"Self efficacy" Whoops. I currently hold a 4.0 GPA (greater than 80% average) and now I absolutely can't go any lower than that. I'm procrastinating and terrified that my grade is going to go any lower than that... because that makes a lot of sense... right? (Also have ADHD, Autism, and mild OCD.... yay....)
OK, I'm going to vacuum my apartment at the end of this video. But I'm going to do a really bad job of it.
I watch TH-cam videos while I cooking and doing physical therapy
Or procrastinate productively. I used to procrastinate by drinking and playing computer games, now I procrastinate by studying and coding. I still drink and play computer games, but not nearly as much as I used to
But what if you need to procastinate the studying.
@@dutchik5107 that's what I use drinking and playing computer games for. It's not 100% productive procrastinatibg, only like 60%
@@nicolaiveliki1409 so then you just don't procrastinate anymore...
@@dutchik5107 well I do procrastinate on paying bills and sending tax declarations
Procrastination is the story of my life 😅
If u are feeling sleepy throughout the day, you have bigger issues to deal with...
Get good sleep otherwise you'll suffer in every imaginable way.
I'm procrastinating right now.
