    Great video from 3 years ago. Do you use an inflatable sleeping pad now? As a cold sleeper, a pad with an R value around 5 may help you stay warmer. I use an R7 pad for snow camping in the NSW Snowy Mountains & it keeps me very warm. I pair it with a short foam mat in case of a puncture.

    Super helpful! Thanks for that.
    Going solo in one week, I guess at the same time you did back in 2019! Any recommendation on camping spots?

    • @settohike
      @settohike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow! I can imagine it would be a great time to go now without the rest of the world being there :P We actually didnt end up camping out any of the nights (cheating i know) as there was always free space in the huts. So sadly I cannot say which camping spots are best! But personally Windermere Hut was my favourite because it was cute and little and Bert Nichols Hut was my least favourite because it felt extra dark and damp haha.
      Have an amazing trip! :D

    What a lovely video . Thanks for taking time and making one ! BTW what was the final weight of the pack without food please? And how much did the food weigh ?

    • @settohike
      @settohike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I really appreciate that! This is just an estimate as I never did an official final weigh all my things prior to starting the track. But from memory a day or two before my pack was sitting at 10-11kg + food 5-6kg + water about 2kg. I'll make sure to weigh my pack more regularly for upcoming hikes so that I can let you know how it fluctuates between short and long trips!

    Thanks lovely, good video you’ve given me some ideas for next year. I was planning on going November 2020 but I think I want to go September because I really want to see snow as I’ve never seen snow! I need to buy everything again because my whole current hike set up is only suitable for North Queensland weather, my bag is only a 46L Osprey Eja which isn’t going to fit a whole heap of warm gear in it. Did you hike in your tights & rain pants? I’ve tried to find a normal pair of hiking pants but they all look stupid on me because I’m tall, they don’t make them long enough so I usually hike in my Lorna Jane tights when the weather is cooler. So now I’m on the hunt for a pair of warmer tights to hike in. Plan to buy everything at the end of this winter season so I get it all on special 😉

    • @settohike
      @settohike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you :) Yeah I wore all 3 every day (my thermal pants, then tights, then rain pants) I am a lover of just wearing shorts so I had to convince myself to pull the tights out! Every day for me was either raining, snowing or walking past wet bushes so it was best to keep the rain pants on! I've never been hiking in Queensland, would love to get up there one day! Definitely more of a challenge in the snow but you'll find it extremely beautiful if you've never seen snow before! September was good as it had a mixture of full on snow half way up your leg, or light dustings or melting snow in other sections. Have fun buying some new gear!! :D

    awesome video! just booked overland track for October and I'm nervous....worried about the weather
    would you recommend just bringing 2 set of thermals? (1 for sleeping and 1 for hiking)
    would you need a down jacket? or would you be constantly warm when hiking - even thou you went through crazy snow and rain?
    and i'm guessing you can't charge your phone at all apart from your power bank right?

    • @settohike
      @settohike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats amazing! I am very excited for you!
      Yeah two sets of thermals was plenty for me (one set for sleeping one set for hiking) as long as you keep them dry you won’t need anymore. I used to take a spare top when I first started hiking but now I just have one set of sleeping clothes and one set of hiking clothes.
      In regards to a down jacket it would defintley be good for when you finish hiking for the day but I found that I never needed my warm jacket while actually hiking. (I spent most of my time in my thermal top + t-shirt + rain jacket and I only had one day where it was noticeably colder and had to add in my fleece jumper under my rain jacket.
      and yeah thats correct you’ve only got your power bank for charging things! I hope this makes sense! Let me know if you have any more questions :)

    Thanks for the video!
    I'll be doing the hike in November - with your walking gear, how essential are the gaiters and the gloves?
    Specifically (for the gaiters): Is this a nice to have, or am I going to suffer without it? (I'll be wearing long pants, and in the past I've just put on overpants if I need to go through a particularly bushy section - though it can get uncomfortably hot if I do that)
    For the gloves: Is it fine to just go with wool gloves (helps to keep warm, but I guess it wouldn't be great if there is water to contend with), or are the waterproof ski-style gloves that you had (heavier and clunkier I imagine) the way to go?

    • @settohike
      @settohike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I reckon you can get away with no gaiters especially if you have long pants. The gaiters were great for walking in the snow but I reckon you’ll be fine without them. The gloves were great for me since my hands are always freezing haha my friend just bought the wooden ones. Im definitely glad I had them with all the snow and rain we had but hopefully November might have some better weather. :)

    Cool video, enjoyed watching several times already! If you did the OT again, what would you do differently in terms of gear?

    • @settohike

      I would take camp shoes! haha I am always adjusting what gear I take. I'd love to do the Overland in summer for a different experience. :)

    How much did all that weigh

    • @settohike
      @settohike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My pack would have weighed roughly 10kg + food and water was about 7kg. I've changed a few things from here so luckily getting a bit lighter!
