The power-hungry Gamilas have taken over Earth, and only a distant planet has the key to save humans from extinction. Granted the schematics of a high-powered engine, the Space Battleship Yamato is built to traverse the galaxy and retrieve hope for their survival. Battling extraterrestrial forces along the way, the crew of the Yamato will stop at nothing to save their home.

I found it at a store while I was stationed in Germany and started watching it. Eventually I found out it was a reboot and it turns out the oringal was one of my dad's favorite shows when he was a kid which I thought was awesome. But definitely doesn't get as much credit as it deserves in the west unfortunately
I too finished today and I can belive that I missed this gem despite the fact that I love sci-fi. 😬

This is the best example of how rule of cool works. Why refit/make a replica of the Yamato and turn it into a space battleship? Because it’s considerably cooler than a more sensible option!

Welp, time to ruin the party by saying that Yamato’s wreck is split in two (this wasn’t known when the oh SBY came out), so you can’t hide a space battleship inside it. Of course you can do what the 2199 reboot did by creating a fake wreck that is easier to conceal the Space Battleship itself.
The Yamato saw more action in anime than she ever did in real life.

@@samsignorelli ikr real yamato participated in I think 3 missions (Midway; Leyte and Ten go) meanwhile BBY-001 goes on combat for a year-a memorable journey :)

Ten-go was a suicide mission, and she didn't even reach her intended beaching area before being sunk.
Leyte -- more accurate;y the Battle of Samar -- was the only real fight she got into where she did any damage....and even then was driven off by Taffy 3's forces.
Yamato didn't exactly cover herself in glory when she was in servce.

If you're like me and you're a sci-fi lover, a history freak, a naval enthusiast and also happen to be a weeb then this is the right show for you.
Yes. The attention to even the small details on the Yamato herself - gun turret swiveling, port and starboard lights and other goodies we get to see in later episodes are just...stunning. When she is at surface rest in an aquatic environment, she looks like she could sail into any port on Earth and tie up at the pier. She is truly a ship in the vast sea of Space.
this is the perfect show for us tbh
it has naval stuff that is imported into cosmic warfare which in term of many things... well they're the same but the difference is where the ships could go, orient themselves and some other jazz
the Yamato itself have an interesting history to say the least so having seen it just have more is interesting

Well sort of... once you get past the core premise that the Yamato is in any way intact on the sea bed. Somehow the Japanese Mythology surrounding the ship overlook that just as she was sinking the #2 Magazine went up triggering what was to be the long time record holder for largest man made non nuclear explosion. Not to be broken until the on the pad disaster of the Soviet N-1 moon rocket destroyed most of the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the early 70's. Yamato's explosion triggered a 10 mile high mushroom cloud, and registered on seismic monitoring stations around the Pacific. Needless to say the ship did not reach the bottom in one piece. There are 2 large pieces on the bottom with a huge chunk of the ships midsection that was once between them pretty much vaporized. Musashi is much the same. She also suffered a main magazine explosion as she rolled over. The only Yamato class hull that might be mostly intact on the bottom is the mysterious Shinano. The 3rd sister converted into the worlds biggest and worst aircraft carrier, that was sunk by a US sub torpedo about 10 hours after she was first launched. She sank from 1 or 2 torpedo hits due to her watertight doors having not yet been installed. And she was unarmed. So there shouldn't be that many holes in her if she is ever located.
That's literally me you're describing. I also have a rather unhealthy obsession with the Pacific theatre.
How the Japanese imagined yamato when they constructed it:
well yeah basically, it was the greatest battleship of all time in ww2.
basically the axis have some op ships and armory but they lost because theyre tactics and the unfair amount of manpower.

@@ath_ala8078 Bismarck was poorly designed and Yamato was useless, the steel would have been better off going into building some more Shoukaku class ships for all the good they would have done once all their good pilots were shot down. The best Axis capital ships of the war were the Littorio's, and even they were no match for British carrier power
@@brockbayley5279 this is true, the only real issues with the Littorio class aside from dubious shell quality, was the armor protection scheme, the decapping layer followed by a gap filled with a kind of fluffy concrete and then the real belt armour wasnt great, if they had done it as a solid belt it would have been near 16 inches thick, which would give it almost Yamato levels of protection lol.
I can imagine in the 1970s the original producer was sitting down on his desk thinking of a idea until he took the word ‘Space ship’ literally and thought of the Yamato.

@@cardiv5zuikaku944 Yeah, the producer took the copyright of SBY, but it's actually the animator (Leiji Matsumoto) who came up with the SBY idea... the producer continued to ban Matsumoto's sequals (after Final Yamato) for profit, which lead to the decline of the SBY series :(

@@robertf.kuszewski4150 What the OP wrote wasn't the English translation of the Yamato theme but the theme to Star Blazers. While my Japanese isn't all that hot either, I know enough to know that they're not saying Star Blazers in the song, but Space Battleship Yamato instead, as in the titie of the anime.
Riceball01 it’s actually a rather rough translation, changed in only a few spots. the Japanese version says a lot of the same things.
Captain Okita is up there with Admiral Adama as one of the most bad ass spaceship military commanders in history.

From a new recording of the old theme song to art style reminiscent of old anime to exceedingly epic orchestrate in all of it's ost to the nostalgic sound design and effects that sound like old scifi sfx redone and enhanced for modern audio systems. There's just so much love in this show.

Here's a funny story: I binged this series after discovering it in SRWV and shortly afterwards went on a trip to Tokyo with this theme fresh in my mind. One night at a bar in Roppongi and after a few drinks I noticed a group of 3 Japanese people sitting next to me. One of them had a "Captain Santa" T-shirt on, which I mistook for Okita-san. I yelled over to them: OKITA-San! Uchuu Senkan Yamato!! with my broken Japanese and they replied saying the same. I of course immediately started singing this theme and all 3 of them joined me, they even picked up the one part I forgot... We ended up doing the entire 1.30 minutes. It was a fun experience! Yamato truly is a cultural phenomenon.

@@Mr-Trox the combat in that universe is different. The shock cannons would have a range of 100,000 km which would render carriers without instant matter transporters obsolete and the Yamato has insane missile point defence systems which shot down missiles from the comet empire fleet. The Yamato's transit wave motion gun is basically 1000s of times stronger than the death star superlaser which overwhelmed and did alotta damage to the ark of destruction in which could ram gas giants to dust. In general, yes the space battleship Yamato have went down swinging once and recovered, but the enemy that brought it down was a freaking space armada spambot which had billions of ships at their disposal and controlled the ark of destruction. Basically speaking, don't use space carriers and fighters without instant matter transporters or you're a Comet Empire fleet spambot that has God knows how many drones in a swarm or you have plenty of agile single use space battleship size stabbing knifes that impales space battleships and destroys them in which could easily be taken down by missiles.
This is one of the intros that it's a war crime to skip

Just started watching this recently and love it. It’s amazing to see all the influences the series had that I never knew about. As a huge fan of the Dreamcast rpg Skies of Arcadia it’s super clear they drew huge inspiration from it.
Also inspired SF "hadoken" from the "hadō hō"- wave motion gun
Star Blazers was and remains one of my all-time greatest cartoons, which I watched religiously as a child. This modern version should serve as a blueprint of how to do remakes right...
I am so happy that this was properly dubbed. Star Blazers as it was called here in the States is one those shows that is well and truly timeless. When I have children I am going to have them watch this show. Not because of the cool space battles or the quite frankly top notch animation, but because at its core this show is about the power of the human spirit and that no matter how impossible the task, we will prevail!
I didn't know it existed! IMAGINE! Early '80's on a very EARLY Sunday morning. I would sneak downstairs trying not to wake my grandmother. I would use the black and white TV in the kitchen, sometimes adding tinfoil to the rabbit ears to get a better signal. At 6:30 sharp, I heard the words, "We're off to outer space..." BEFORE I know what Japanese animation WAS. Before I knew there was a thing called dubbed (in this case, badly dubbed) BEFORE any of all that, I fell in love with Star Blazers. So much so, that I decided to name my children Nova and Derek Wildstar. Flash foreward through hundreds of anime, both good and bad to the birth of my child, who's middle name is Wildstar. This IS my childhood. Without ths show, I wouldn't have watched Voltron, Robotech, Akira, Warriors of the Wind (Ghibli WHO!?!?!), Gundam Wing, Ranma 1/2, Bleach . Evangelion, Raxephon, Orphen, Sword art online FMA and FMP and so on... I have the live action movie, which was cool and all, but this FELT like it. I could almost see the fuzzy snow from bad reception watching this. I have asked...no DEMANDED... this for Christmas.

It was on TV in the late 70's in my country. After watching shows like Scooby Doo, when this came on I was blown away and felt American TV animation (not movies) needed to step up their game.
Dang. Waves of nostalgia this theme generates remembering seeing this as a kid back in 1979'ish.
This ship, this series, this themesong, has spoken to me ever since I was 6 years old. A ridiculously scaled battleship; broken by warfare and hubris, that eventually rises to become the sole symbol of Humanity's redemption. In fact, it becomes symboligical of Humanity itself. Beaten down by combat but still persisting in the face of adversity. Long live Yamato and her crew!

I love this intro so much, the fact that this remake kept the original music just adds to the timeless charm this series has.
My parents watched this as kids and then my dad showed it to my brother and I when we were little. We didn't even know that anime was really a thing, Space Battleship was a show we watched right along side Wild Kratts and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
It was our favorite and when the reboot came out, we were all obsessed.
I wish it was more popular here in the west though! I need someone to talk to about it!

@@SkaryMisfit Only the 1974 Versions of Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers) is considered part of Leijiverse now. Anything associated with 2199 Project is a separate universe and not a Leijiverse proper.
Just look at Zero Goods Universe promo wallpaper. To the left shows spaceships he designed (Three different ships named Yamato, including this one, Arcadia, Deathshadow, Queen Emeraldas, and even the less known Karyu (Cosmo Warrior Zero). To the right, Space trains that belongs to Galaxy Railways, beginning with triple number expresses (999) and included more modern works like Big One.
The animation is freaking crisp. It looks 2D mixed with 3D like how they did with treasure planet

One of the happiest memories of my childhood was waking up early to watch Starblazers.
Such a fantastic theme song! I remember running up the street from the bus to get home by 3:30 to watch this every weekday! I make my older brother draw me a picture of the Argo so I could have space wars on a doodle pad, lol. Epic!

Picked this up on physical release just the other day. A fine addition to my collection. It's one of the best sci-fi anime I've seen in years. Currently half way through the first season and I have the second on pre-order.
Love this series from the time that I first saw the original 1970s version was I was a kid growing up in New Jersey. Just discovered the English-dubbed on Amazon Prime were I can buy each episode.

I'm watching 2199, the remake/reboot/whatever it is, now. I think the captain's pretty underestimated. I know Kodai is the viewpoint character, but I like Okita's understated nature, with the moments of badassery to show us why he's in charge.

Regardless if it's the original, the 2199 version, or what THE ALFEE did, it still brings tears to my eyes, because you could feel straight away what the subject of the series has to do, no fuss, no muss.
Just finished season 1 and 2 and my god it was amazing. Underrated film.

My only pet peeve with the original series was that they renamed the ship from Yamato to Argo. Great series
