It's amazing how true to the original soundtrack the 2199 music is...first time I heard the musical cues, I did a double-take and wondered if they'd somehow restored and enhanced the originals, or sampled them into the new mixes. I felt 2199 was actually an improvement over the original, and not just because of the shiny new special effects...the story actually felt more fleshed out and coherently presented overall, though I will say the events when Yamato returned to Earth in the final episode felt a little contrived. +Dana Ralston It is amazing; I mean they kept so much of the original music. I love it! I just wish that I could get Space Battleship Yamato 2199 on Netflix.
Agreed; I particularly liked the way they addressed some of the glaring plot holes in the early episodes of the Original... 1. Why did Ganz and Schultz have Terran-like flesh tones, while Gamilons were blue. (Deslock's first appearance notwithstanding.) Answer: Inhabitants of conquered planets can serve in the Gamilon military (as "second-class Gamilons"). Ganz and Schultz are Zaltzians, not Gamilons. 2. Why send a ship crewed mostly by cadets and teenagers (even among senior bridge officers and department heads) on the Most Important Mission in Human History? I did the math on this once: if we assume our current global population of 7.4 billion, and also assume that the Gamilon attacks have wiped out *99.9 percent* of the pre-war population, that *still* leaves 7.4 million people to form a crew of 114 - or approximately 65,000 people for each position on the Yamato. And despite that, we got two cadets who recently were manning a desolate outpost on Mars (and had a talent for crashing very expensive aircraft) as two of the most-important bridge officers on the mission. Answer: The EDF *had* more-experienced officers picked out for the mission, but they were all killed when the Gamilons destroyed the bunker right next to the ship they were all gathered in. Since the Gamilons were onto what the Terrans were up to, it was essential to launch the Yamato ASAP with whatever replacement crew could be cobbled together. (Okay, very contrived - it violates the Star Trek adage, "Don't put all your ranking officers in one shuttlecraft" - but however ham-fisted it may have been, at least it was an attempt to acknowledge there was a plot hole and provide some kind of explanation.)
If you give the show benefit of the doubt, wasn't it even less contrived? From what I remember it was a structure they were taking shelter in extremely temporarily while the attack was going on. It "just happened" to be hit before the attack could be stopped.
Hard to say, dapenguin2 ... the subtitles just said, "All personnel, remain on standby in the shelter." It looked like a fairly sturdy steel structure with lights and support beams and so on - it's not like they were hiding out in a nearby cave...
