- This is a drive that covers the entire length of Big Bethel Road from its beginning within the City of Hampton to York County at Yorktown Road. Included is the connection to Big Bethel Road from Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. The road that becomes Big Bethel Road starts as E Street at Aluminum Avenue. Outside of Hampton, Big Bethel Road carries the designation of Virginia Secondary State Route 600. Also included is the remainder of Route 600 past the end of Big Bethel Road to the Tabb Boat Launch at Rodgers A. Smith Landing in York County. Big Bethel Road is named after the early American Civil War Battle, Battle of Big Bethel on June 10, 1861 that was fought near the York County line in this video.
Because these are secondary routes, there are multiple route 600s across the Commonwealth of Virginia, some may even be close to each other but in different counties. The routes are minimally signed to the public, but are signed with a circle shield as well as small white guide signs at minor intersections. The road name signage at intersections also have the route numbers on them. Often the secondary routes have no directional banner, although some are signed with one. Since cities are independent of their surrounding counties, the secondary routes often do not traverse inside of these cities and end at their borders as maintenance is then transferred to the city.
