Jamie Carragher has written a column, saying Liverpool are gambling on Slot being the next big thing - but is he right in saying this? Back Pages Tonight take a look.
This comes after Liverpool and Feyenoord have reached an agreement in principle over a compensation package for Arne Slot to become Jurgen Klopp's successor.

If Carra don't like him, he will be world class.
Nop, they are indeed gambling.. the guy has 0 history/achievement's.. After Klopp, they should go for something bigger than This unknown guy.

We knew about seven hag for years to. Look what a success that idiot is 😂😂 slot will be no better. Eredivisie is like Sunday league over here. Their managers aren’t at the level we require in the prem

FYI - all appointments are gambles. Look at all the big names who haven't lasted 2 seasons in the premier league. Everyone said Leverkusen was mental appointing Alonso.
Exactly
Alonso did not want to come to Liverpool - his beloved Liverpool.
Why are the journos not saying this - he chose not to come.
So why are they still hoping he will come one day.....good grief.
@@sanmateoflightsLiverpool didn't get Amorim because of his preference of a back 3. Nothing suggests Alonso would even have got the job.
@@sanmateoflightsHes just built something special at leverkusen so leaving after 1 potentially undefeated treble season would be stupid. Then the madrid job is there after next season with a superstar team of mbappe vini jude etc. Maybe even Bayern. If he comes to Liverpool he would stay for several years as the managers often do. Madrid and Bayern managers switch a lot more. I see him at Liverpool after winning everything at Madrid.
@@sanmateoflights It was always possible he'd want to ride out what he'd built in Leverkusen. Nonsense to frame it like "he chose not to come" as if Liverpool are rubbish. Try to manufacture outrage for taking the piss. Children today.
Arteta was a gamble too. He did not manage any team until he took over Arsenal. He was just assistant to Pep. So gambling is ok as long he does not ruin what Jurgen has built.
Arteta has more experience In the prem even as a player and assistant eredevise league is not top 5
@@ELH0603 So in your logic, playing in the Prem and being an assistant in the Prem is better cv than actually coaching and managing a team and also, winning trophies as a coach?
Maybe, I love football am I perfect to analyze or know a lot maybe not but I do know the prem will be a challenge
@@ELH0603 I agree with you on that but that is not what you said in your original post.

From hendo to endo
Now klopp to slot

Bayern: from Sane to Mane to Kane
Moving from klopp to anyone would always be a gamble. There’re good managers all over. People have to get a chance in order to be successful. That’s how it is in life. The boardroom structure of the club is very very good. They get a lot of things right. I have a positive feeling about this coach based on what’s been said. I’ll be watching a few Feynoord games to have a look at his setup
Bro it’s FEYENOORD ❤
Honestly listening to these guys "So Called Experts" chatting absolute shite with their Negative mentalities is infuriating!!!!
you're right, anyone who believes all these ex players and so called press experts is a fool ,that's on everything they say ,especially the co commentators stating the bleeding obvious, wrecks my head ,while writing this I've zoned out on these knobs ...give the lad a chance ,that's all !!
What shite are they talking, I'm intrigued?
like I said ,I zoned out and I bet me and you could go on there and talk shite ,hope you're less intrigued now 😊
Well Ten Haarg had a good cv coming from the Dutch league . So calling it a gamble isn’t far fetched
They are probably man city or man United fans in hiding bro 😂
Seen Slot at work at AZ abd Feyenoord. Wouldnt had mind him at Ajax over ten Hag even when TH was performing pretty well at Ajax. Hes a top coach and hes got an eye for transfers, tactically top and great communicator.
There are not the managers available like Klopp was when he was appointed. All new managers are gambles... FSG were mainly concerned about playing style and not having to massively change the team...
FSG are only concerned about yes men. Was the beginning of then end when Klopp took all the control he did. FSG didn't like the fact he was bigger than the club
We the fans trust our club, ignore the haters and pundits
Who wouldn’t have been a gamble?
Ivan Toney
Alonso
@@MultiBigstewould definitely have been a gamble
He's done it with second-rate players in a second-rate league, so you could hope with better players he could do it in a better league - that's why they use data
Carra like most of the LFC fanbase probably couldn't tell you who the manager of Feyenoord was a week ago, but now were supposed to act like he knows what he's talking about. Every appointment is a risk, look at Arsenal post-Wenger went with Emery a multi-timed european cup finalist and he flopped then look at United went with Moyes and van Gaal both established managers and failed. Every manager Liverpool would've appointed would be a gamble, even Xabi or Amorim or Jose or any manager in world football. Most managerial appointments are gambles and risks, whether you are Liverpool at the top end of the Premier League and one of the biggest clubs in world football or league 2 side or a non-league side. But hey common sense doesn't prevail
Exactly, well said. LFC have appointed the coach who could seamlessly manage the current group of players with a similar style
who is best suited for the club and culture.
Alonso did not want to come - and was never an option.
Amorim was not suited to LFC with his back-3 and needing a complete defensive overhaul.
Mourinho, Conte were too toxic and negative.
I think Liverpool have made the right move - Slot will do well given all that we know so far.
@@sanmateoflightslike we knew about Eric Ten Hasrg ? Truth is , nothing is guaranteed mate
I bet you could t either soft cok , that’s why we pay people to look for us, just like your Club probably does.
@@smullinsmulins6497 The different is Slot come to Liverpool, well run club with good culture. Meanwhile Ten Hag come to United, messy club with many problems
Nobody takes Carragher seriously
Muppet 😂
clearly the one who always thinks straight
Yea. Let’s pretend you like Liverpool more than Carra
I take him seriously.
Your opinion is he’ll succeed, Carragher’s opinion is it’s a risk. Are people not allowed to have different opinions considering we’re all just speculating the future?
Well since Jamie still thinks that the best team isnt the one who raises the trophy, then maybe the best manager doesnt need to manage Liverpool
Im worried he is coming from a tinpot league but im still willing to give the guy a chance.
Any new manager is a gamble doesn’t matter what they’ve done in the past.
Stepping outside in the morning is a gamble.Welcome to the most successful club in English football history Arne.
Jamie Carrager will say anything to get his ratings up.
they are talking about slots winrate in the champions league but I dare you to watch the first game feyenoord played against atletico and lazio earlier in the season. If he can do that with 2nd rate players and injuries etc.then perhaps he deserves less critique on his winrate. He had to rebuild each season too.
It seems what is not being realised is there's not many (available) top class managers OR managers with lots of domestic/European title winning credentials. Even Alonso (if he wanted to join Liverpool) is still inexperienced despite what he will win this year. So Liverpool have to go for the best fitting manager tactically and personality wise for what they want to achieve in the future. We are in a new generation of managers and we will need to wait a few years to see who are the next few to be top of the new managers.
Nobody new about this Arne slot guy until Liverpool rumors started so definitely a gamble, Carragher finally with a decent take
Any manager is a gamble in reality.
It will also be dependent on recruitment, so not just Slott.
klopp was a calculated gamble and even he is/was highly dependent on good recruitment
Every manger and player is a gamble when they are signed
Isn’t every new manager a “gamble”? Even “top 10” managers have failed as often as not.
What incoming manager wouldn’t be a gamble?
Big difference between Erdivise and the premier league as Ten Hag has found out
Arne Slot lol sounds like a gambling website
You praised Ten Hag he flopped, the fact you doubt him he is the right fit.
All appointments are gambles, some just less so than others. Arne Slot clearly ticks a lot of the boxes Liverpool the club and city require, and is namely the pick of the returning now CEO and new Director. If there’s an elite premier league club that has the right structure and recruitment/processes, it’s Liverpool - that’s been proven the last 10+ years since FSG started to really implement their processes and goals from the top down. Arne Slot will have been examined deeply in multiple areas by the club but there is always an element of risk in recruitment and Liverpool will know that. My feeling is, they’ll be thinking if it doesn’t work out, who’s to say he’s going to be there for as long as Klopp was, they can simply move for the next ‘right man’ a few seasons down the line, even 1 season if it goes that badly and the likes of Alonso etc. are then back on the table truly looking to make the next step. I wish Slot all the best and hope it works out, but if it doesn’t, he’ll move somewhere else and Liverpool may be in a better position to secure their no.1 target in a year or two’s time. While Liverpool have a history of backing their managers and giving them time, they won’t say no to dropping a good one to get their true target when the time is right for all parties. Rogers wasn’t doing the worst job and Liverpool were slowly finally on the up under him and a new FSG model, but when their man, Klopp become available to join, even Liverpool dropped their manager mid-way through the season and get their man. I think we need to move away from Slot being the next 7-10 year Klopp, and accept that he may just be a place holder. I’m sure that’s not the case and Slot will be given all the backing and tools to succeed at Liverpool, but Liverpool will no doubt be keeping an eye on their other targets and make another move if needed. They haven’t built the club back to the top, (too manager, new state of the art training centre, serious stadium development, player recruitment development and in turn trophies etc.) to see it slip down again by pinning their hopes on the one JK successor.
There isn't many top-top managers/coaches. Im thinking he will do well. 😊
I wonder who writes Jamie Carragher's 'excellent and eloquent' column for him.
You gamble on 90% of managers…given an equal playing field. Let’s get behind him.
Ivan Toney "What's that?! Sign me up Slot!"
Liverpool would you gamble with Erik ten hag over slot.
remember last summer...CDM...show that we had....we lost "luck" ( said the boss) and we got endo...the same thing now...we never get our first target...shame....
People normally gamble on slots
Feyenoord010Rotterdam❤
You couldn't get a better endorsement than that. It would have been great to get Gerrard in. That would shut Carragher up once and for all, after Liverpool fighting a relegation battle.
Only Xabi and Jurgen have the ability to win the league and champions league under Liverpools financial restrictions. It takes a VERY special manager to win us the league against the moneybags.
Financial restrictions?
Restrictions, Klopp spent close to a £1b
@bobofett3966 It's modern day football! Footballers that once cost 30/40 million, now cost 100. If you look up the spending charts of the Premier league teams, you'll see Liverpool sit 9th, behind the likes of West ham and Villa, so to compete with an oil state club with the transfer budget Klopp has got, is genius.
@@bobsocks7575 it’s kind of obvious
Look at the Bellingham deal
Wed be gambling on anyone theres no other managers out there
The whole of life is a gamble , but we still have to keep that roulette wheel turning . Slot is now the man running the table , and he deserves to have a chance . Hopefully he can grow with the role , even if he doesn't match Jurgen Klopp's credentials ( and very few do ) .
As a LFC fan, I think Carra has an opinion I'd listen to. Realistic.
Carra probably like half of our fanbase didn't know his name a week ago. Stop acting like pundits/ex-pros know everything about football, they don't. Most ex-pros/pundits are just as dumb as fans on social media but because they have a name they get paid
Every manager appointment is a “gamble”
Aku percaya Edward dia melakukannya dengan terbaik
All managers are gambles. They bring new tactics, new ways of treating players, new psychology, new everything. And it all has to work. It's not rocket science to say that
Mark is happy to see Arne. Another Dutch that will replicate the MU flop. I also think this is a big gamble. Arne need to prove doubters wrong.
Lazy journalism. Look around there are no managers of Klopps level (even back then) around now in this moment. It's a time of a lot of up and coming managers. The only option available now that has a track record of winning something is Tuchel. I think not.
It's a calculated gamble... Let's hope our data guys are spot on like they have been on many a occasion.
Dam right a gamble cause amorim and alonso wouldn't take the risk handling the hot seat so thats why its a slot for reds
They are so right. Its a gamble plus he is no top player magnet. Fortunately Arne can make his name with the current set of young players that he is inheriting. LFC business model remains clear, they are not going to spend to win.
so u think kloop was top player magnet in first year ? lmao
Literally nobody out there that isn’t a gamble. Any manager coming into a new side has dilemmas & decisions to make. Do the owners back him is the question. These guys sounding real casual with their punditry.
Carragher likes him but its a fact he s a gamble and I guarantee that's down to Edwards having more power and going with analytics and statistics ticking boxes. It's definitely a gamble because Liverpool managers need to big characters that the fans can buy into and believe he can take us on a journey. Our managers are bigger than players to us. I'm ready to give him a chance but there's no way I can say I'm confident. Up the reds. YNWA
Yes Jamie knows alot ,,and iwould like to thank him for leaving liverpool in the lurch in defence in 2013 as we missed him in 2014 when we would have won premi had jami not left
Any manager we get after Klopp is a gamble just a fact.
Kloop to slot. Let's not hope it flops. All the best liverpool, but brace yourself for the rocky roads ahead.
WOW..How did carragher work that one out and i can hear the crickets in his head from here?? Well of course it is every manager is a massive gamble..Lols
Yet Carragher wanted us to get Tuchel who was awful at Chelsea, took klopp few seasons to get us challenging for league
Wow John Cross did you come up with all that on your own
As a LFC fan . Slot is a Dutch Brendon Rodgers . We should have gone it for Jose Mourinho, Thomas Tuchal, or Hans Flick. If Slot got the job , then Martin O Neil should also be considered. In my opinion, Slot is not the man for LFC and will probably get the sack in a year.
If it doesnt work out. We will be in for Xabi
When you put cold palmer and Bez in a washing machine.. you get mark ogden...
Signing any new manager is a gamble. What's the difference here.
Any manager is a gamble. Instead of saying its a gamble how about you tell us which manager would not be a gamble
I have always respected Jamie's opinion on anything Liverpool but sometimes I just wish he would add caution to some comments that he makes.
Negativity can breed doubt in the minds of others, inparticular the fans and at the time when LFC need a little positive news then why would you spout the comments like this 🤷♂️
Liverpool have done their homework on this so very little changes behind closed doors and on the pitch
Who ever heard of Arsen Wenger when Arsenal appointed him? Became a roaring success so Slot deserves a go at the job. If you seen how his current team plays then you’ll understand
Slot a good fit for liverpool comes out of the Roy Hodgson mold.
Let’s give him a chance and see what he can do.
I think you will see liverpool go the way of united now.
They won't be challenging for the title for the foreseeable future.
then its good ....liverpool goes to 2nd division ..lmao
The media and football fans really don’t have a clue about anything do they. This guy will probs win them the league. And then they’ll say he was always destined to do it. No ones listening anymore.
They said Pep would fail when he first came 😂
Nagelsman or Tuchel would have been a mire fitting choice but we'll see
Both are still a gamble. Both fired from previous jobs for shortcomings on & off pitch. Good coaches yes but both w/ flaws.
Tuchel is pants. YNWA
Well I suppose you are taking a gamble on any new manager coming in 🤷
From Xavi to Slot? Really, really weird trajectory that….
What if Xavi falls off next season & gets 4th in the bundesliga ? Ppl get too caught up in the media hype.
Firstly, it’s Xabi. Secondly, we aren’t actually privy to Liverpool’s internal discussions and analysis around the search for a manager. The hype around Alonso and Amorim was purely fuelled by the media. It’s entirely possible that Slot was number one choice right from the start.

Carra one big gamble himself. Lucky to keep his job with Sky.
Lolololololo 😂😂😂
How many wish Carragher could take his criticism to the touchline as a coach...
2:38 I see what you did there
Imagine what Scousers would say if City or Utd appointed Slot, they’d ridicule them, yet now they are appointing him, suddenly he is able to walk on water, be honest you knew nothing about him and are just having bias.
Just shut up you plonker
I dont understand why a Liverpool legend is putting extra pressure on a new manager,
theyre ttalking like could do something better ...lmao
A new manager is always a gamble
Dutch league is very poor for a few years now. ETH had this amazing reputation but look at him now. Koeman; De Boer; Van Gaal all struggled. Slot not even winning the league this season even with Ajax being so bad. Fans will need to be very patient
but he got best manager 2 years in a row ...
Name me one manager from the Dutch league that has been a success in England. I’ll wait.
No other club gets doubted as much as lfc. Every time we prove them wrong, yet they still doubt us. Slot will come good, he may not win the prem, but he will make red fans happy again. YNWA
Of course, we gambled with Klop, too.
they even vote for ancelotti before ....what a fool fans

I know this is standard practice, but FSG are the only ones who have done due diligence rather than guessing what Slot is like and get a few quotes from players that know a bit about him. Carra knows nothing about slot other than what we all can find out looking on the internet and TH-cam.
U think Carragher who has never been a manager himself knows a lot about football management?
Tbf, everyones a gamble. If hes pants and it doesnt work he'll be gone soon enough and we'll be back on the managerial merry go round.
Hey Cara, in 2015, Klopp was a gamble. Tell me now who's not?
Paisley was a gamble for Liverpool
Pep was a gamble for Barcelona.
Klopp was a gamble when Dortmund hired him from lowly Mainz
Arteta was a gamble for Arsenal
Alonso has barely just won 1 title and the world is going crazy about him
and yet he chose to NOT come to Liverpool - he did not want to come.
So then, who else was available?
Mourinho or Conte - with their toxicity and negative football, they were never suited to Liverpool FC or the fans.
Southgate, Potter - give me a break.
Frank, De Zerbi have won nothing.
Tuchel, Flick, Low - all have had poor last jobs.
You forgot Amorim
Tuchel has had multiple poor last jobs? Give Slot a chance. Who knows, can we do worse than 3rd?
Up the Arne Slot Reds
