    Each year we handpick the best Tall Fescue varieties for the Southeast creating our own special blend for planting new lawns and overseeding existing ones. This blend of three first-quality Tall Fescue varieties is specifically chosen for it’s dark color, disease resistance, and drought and wear tolerance. Today we are going to be looking at necessary steps for successfully planting a new Tall Fescue lawn.
    1. The first step in preparing our site for planting our new lawn will be to eliminate any existing vegetation. One of the best ways to do this is by spraying the area with a concentrated weed killer containing glyphosate, something like Roundup. You want to make sure you do this about two weeks prior to seeding to give the glyphosate plenty of time to act on the existing vegetation. Remember safety always comes first. Make sure you wear the necessary protective eyewear and gloves when handling any chemicals.
    2. Two weeks after spraying concentrated glyphosate, we use a tiller to remove the vegetation from the site. After we finish tilling the site, we want to look around to see if there are any sticks, stones, or other debris that have been left behind. You also want to try to use a rake to examine for any low spots, depressions, or possibly even high spots. This will help with irrigation and the water flow throughout the seedbed as you prepare.
    3. Now that we have removed any existing vegetation along with any sticks or stones that may have been left behind, we are going to add an organic humus compost known as Soil3. Soil3 will actually add beneficial bacteria and nutrients to the soil, which will help promote a healthier and stronger fescue lawn. One thing you will want to do before this point is have a soil test done on your actual soil. A soil test will help identify whether or not you need any additional amendments added to the soil to help prepare the best seed bed possible. You may find that you don’t need anything. However, when testing our site, we found that we needed to add 50 pounds of lime per 1000 sq. ft. and in addition a 5-10-15 starter fertilizer.
    4. After spreading Soil3 and any other necessary amendments to the soil, now it is time to plant the seed. A handheld spreader will help you control exactly where and how much seed you are actually putting out. The first thing you want to do is make sure the spreader is calibrated correctly, which means you have it set properly. Different spreaders have different types of calibration so you will want to follow the instructions for your particular spreader. We suggest and prefer that you take about half of the seed and walk in a North-South pattern then take the remaining half of the seed and criss-cross in a East-West pattern to make sure you have adequate and complete coverage over the entire seedbed area.
    5. After spreading Tall Fescue seed across the seedbed area you want to make sure there is good seed contact. You may have heard that spreading wheat straw lightly over the Tall Fescue seed is one option for making sure that your seed are covered. We actually advise against that. Remember, we only sell blue tag certified Tall Fescue seed, which is 100% weed free, as is our Soil3 compost. Any time you introduce another element, such as wheat straw into the area, it’s possible that you will introduce foreign weed seed into the site. One possible solution to achieve good seed contact is to lightly rake over the area. When you do that the seed will end up just slightly under the surface. You don’t want to plant them too deep., about ¼ inch is about as deep as they should go. Another option is to use a soil compost spreader. This is really the best option. By using a soil compost spreader you accomplish two things, by rolling back over the entire area it presses the seed lightly into the soil making sure there is good contact. Also, by adding another light layer of compost, the seed will be just under the soil surface and ready for proper germination.
    6. We are down to just the last few steps of planting our new Tall Fescue lawn. One of these steps involves using a roller to eliminate any air pockets you may have or smooth out any uneven areas that may have been left lingering behind.
    7. The final step is to make sure you are prepared to water. We have said this in all of our other videos but we can’t stress it enough. One of the most essential ingredients for establishing your new Tall Fescue lawn from seed will be to make sure you have the proper amount of water. Water immediately after seeding. Then keep the area moist until germination occurs. Once the seedlings start to appear you can gradually decrease the water amount to 1-2 inches per week.

    Thank you so much for this video. I am going to redo my mother's lawn
    in the next week or two and man is it a mess right now and I'd like to
    tell you a little about it and my plan for it. She lives in Arizona,
    when she bought her home here the lawn was OMG Bermuda really nasty and
    invasive! She did not have it properly removed before she had planted
    something even worse! She had a seed sent from Canada a reseeding tall
    growing mess that has infested the whole neighborhood (pure evil stuff) !
    I am going to mow this all down as low as possible and then torch it
    all as to kill and destroy all seeds, then I am going to roter till the
    yard and a quick re burn rake out all remaining rocks and debris. Next
    I'm going to bring some good lawn soil and mix (till) it into the
    remaining native soil of course rake it all smooth then seed it and use a
    roller to press keep it watered for a week or two. The seed that I
    have chosen for the new lawn is called tall fisque (sp?), I am told that
    it does well in full sun and shade which is good because we have both
    and is drought tolerant, it does not reseed or grow tall. Do you have
    any advice about my plan or suggestions and what do you think about the
    seed that I have chose? Thank you in advance.

      Your plan sounds fine, but we do not recommend Tall Fescue for Arizona because it is not drought or heat tolerant at all. It requires 2" of water a week. A better solution for Arizona is TifTuf Drought Tolerant Bermudagrass sod which requires 38% less water than other Bermdagrasses, which in turn require half the watering of Tall Fescue. TifTuf is not available from seed. Here's a link to resources for purchase: www.tiftufbermuda.com

    love this video! We're moving to a new place and we're considering planting tall fescue in the area where our dog runs will be. Will this stand up to high dog traffic and them using the bathroom? If so, how long after planting should we wait before moving the dogs into their kennels? Also, is it ok to walk around on the area where we plant the seeds or should we stay off for a certain amount of time? Thanks!

    • @SupersodTurfgrass
      @SupersodTurfgrass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Tall Fescue will not stand up to dog traffic, since it doesn't spread and repair itself. A better choice is TifTuf bermudagrass which quickly spreads to fill in damage. TifTuf is only available as sod. Also, TifBlair Centipede grass spreads, but not as quickly and its available from sod and seed and shows no damage from dog urine. Avoid zoysia grass - it dies where dogs urinate. For seeded grasses, wait until you have an established lawn - several months. It would be much quicker from sod - as soon as roots develop to tack the sod to the ground - a matter of weeks.

      @@SupersodTurfgrass how will TifTuf Bermuda sod or TifBlair Centipede sod or seed hold up under heavy shade? I was looking at tall fescue but I have an active dog as well. Located in Savannah, GA.

    • @SupersodTurfgrass
      @SupersodTurfgrass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinstephens205 Heavy shade and an active dog are a tough combo for growing a lawn. Please keep in mind that an active dog will always create paths that will stay visible unless the dog is kept off that area for a month or two (then the dog will wear down those paths again). Tall Fescue will not work at all in Savannah because the climate is too hot and Tall Fescue grows in clumps and will not fill in to repair damage. Neither TifTuf nor TifBlair will grow in heavy shade - they need 4-5 hours of direct sunlight. Couple heavy shade with an active dog and your lawn will not last. Here are several solutions: 1) think of TifTuf or TifBlair sod like you do annual plantings and replant every year after it declines or 2) mulch 3-4 inches deep with shredded bark (instead of having a lawn) to keep down the mud. 3) planting Monkey grass, Asiatic jasmine, or shade-loving shrubs is also a solution or you could 4) remove some trees or big limbs to give the area more sunlight and plant TifTuf because bermudagrass is the best at rapidly (with water and fertilizer) growing in to repair damaged areas.

      It won't turn brown in the summer heat, but it will be damaged in the summer heat and will struggle if you have full sunlight. That's why we recommend overseeding your tall fescue each fall. You can have a green lawn in the summer, but it won't look as nice as in the spring and fall. If you have substantial sunlight and don't mind a dormant lawn in the winter, Zenith Zoysia may be a good seed option for you. www.supersod.com/grass-seed/zenith-zoysia-seed.html

    • @SupersodTurfgrass
      @SupersodTurfgrass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is Hillary - I had the same problem, so last autumn my husband and I spread 1" of our Soil3 compost then just laid the sod right on top of the compost, because we couldn't get the tiller to make a dent. There's one area where the hardpan is elevated above the rest and just so compacted that it is causing the lawn to struggle, but 95% of the lawn is doing great. I will continue to topdress with Soil3 compost yearly, to improve the soil from above. Also, I do water extra to help the roots penetrate the soil. Grass roots go deep, especially when watered deeply. The only other option is to rent or hire bigger equipment with more weight that will help it break up the soil. We went for the option I just described and it's working. I hope this helps. Also, this is a personal opinion from personal experience, please keep that in mind.

    • @Fierology
      @Fierology 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same issue. My small tiller just scratched the clay. You can till yours by first turning the clay with a shovel. If it's too hard you can water lightly. Expect to get muddy if you water it. Turning involves lifting a shovelful just enough to turn it over in place. After turning the area bit by bit you'll be able to till and amend. You may want to let the turned clay dry for a day before tilling if the clay just sticks to your tiller. I hope this works for you as it did for me.

I called the manufacturer and was told nothing would grow for at least a year. Funny thing is the lawn has been almost overtaken by crabgrass. Is there a way to neutralize the 365 to reseed? • @SupersodTurfgrass
      @SupersodTurfgrass  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're seeing crabgrass, you probably didn't spread Roudup 365 too heavily. For counteracting it, we recommend tilling the ground and this will help it further break down. We recommend tilling, then testing an area with seeds before you plant your entire lawn. Water the seeds to keep them moist (possibly several times a day) and the tall fescue seedlings will come up in 4-5 days. If they come up, you'll know it's safe to plant your entire lawn with tall fescue seeds. If you start to run out of time, you can consider tall fescue sod. Likewise, test with a few rolls first. Yes, we recommend mulching the Fescue seeds with Soil3 organic compost as the best practice. Please read more about "straw vs. Soil3 compost" here: www.soil3.com/soil3-vs.-wheat-straw-when-seeding-new-lawns.
      We also cover the topic at minutes 4:48 to 6:18 in the video.
      We do not recommend peat moss because of the environmental degradation involved in harvesting it from bogs. There is no peat moss in Soil3 compost because of that reason and because peat adds no nutritional value. It's considered just a "filler" in potting mixes.

    • @SupersodTurfgrass
      @SupersodTurfgrass  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mr Anonymous I don't know much about coconut coir as a mulch because it's not local to the Southeastern US where we're located and it's a relatively new product (outside of hanging basket liners where it's been used for much longer). It seems like another possible filler material and a way to make use of coconut waste (which is a good thing). If you choose to use coconut coir, please use a very thin layer. Grass seeds need light to germinate so be careful about smothering them. If you can't find a suitable mulch, just be sure to water the seed enough to keep them moist - that may mean ~4 times a day (but for only 5 minutes at a time, just to keep the seeds and ground surface moist). As the seeds germinate, you can water less frequently, but longer each time. As important as mulch is rolling the seed after you've planted them to insure that they have good contact with the ground. -Hillary

So I'll have to put these ideas to use next fall...although I have to tell you, I don't know if this was the intended purpose of the instructional video because you've also got a landscaping service that does this, but after watching your comprehensive video, I'm inclined to have someone else do this. It's a LOT of work. My concern is, of course, that a so-called "professional" will have his own way of doing it and if I refer to your method they'll take umbrage at my trying to tell them how to do their job...I'm sure they will cut corners to increase profit margin and lower initial cost to get the sale.

      We recommend sod too - depends on a person's budget.

      Dude .... Wtf? .... I was quoted $7K for sod on 11K SQ ft yard .... I did my own yard in 2weeks exactly as this video shows and my tall fescue is 4" tall already. I spent under $1K for everything (trailer rental, seed, manure, tiller) so I have $6K worth of beer money to enjoy watching my yard look sexy
