I could NEVER own a macaw. They require to much commitment. Their beautiful birds but definitely not for me. The largest bird I would ever own is a conure. I only watch these videos because I really enjoy seeing the special bond you and Rachel have.
Rachel knew a lot of what she says from previous homes she has been in. She has picked up a few different sayings while living with us for the past several years. I love Rachel's laughs!
It all depends on what type of bird YOU want. A parakeet would be generally a much easier bird to care for. Macaws can be demanding, make big messes, and loud too! Be sure you do extensive research before buying/adopting any bird. Be sure you will be able to give the bird the love and care that it needs.
Thank you. Yes, neglect of these beautiful creatures is so heart wrecking. A friend of mine runs a bird rescue, and I absolutely hate hearing the horror stories of neglect done to these wonderful birds, and the years it can take to rehabilitate them. So many of them resort to plucking out their feathers, and some pluck so bad that they pluck holes in their bodies. So sad.
I am so thankful for bird owners like you who really take the time to KNOW how to take care of a creature like this. Every pet requires responsibility but most people who try to own an exotic bird will not dedicate themselves to the challenge of raising what is almost equivalent to a three year old child. Most people don't know how to take care of these magnificent animals and it results in neglect. I love watching your videos and seeing the way you and Rachel interact. What a pair! :D
Adorable. My friend had a macaw he named Hawkeye. After about 15 years, Hawkeye laid an egg. So they changed his name to Priscilla. The vet said that she was obviously contented. So glad you pointed out that they need a lot of care.
Awesome video as always, Jason! I have never owned one of the larger parrots, but as a biologist, avid aquarist &, now, a happy cockatiel owner, I'm so glad you're taking the time to communicate the importance of research! You can never read enough about an animal you wish to keep! My little Cheeky demands the attention of a small child, & has now become a more prominent feature of my videos than me. Always love seeing videos of you & Rachael, & look forward to more updates from you! God bless!
Rachel would have to be infected with Psittacosis in order to spread it. Which she is perfectly healthy and has yearly check ups and blood work done to confirm such. Psittacosis is also very rare. (100-200 cases reported a year in the US) Source: NIH PMH0001152
Hello, I have really enjoyed watching you and Rachel! What an amaing parrot! And I know you have worked really hard with her, and have had to have alot of patcience!! I hope you keep us updated on further videos!
You are both adorable, I'm from Brazil & grew up having different parrots. Thank you for sharing your experiences, I'm looking to rescue a Macaw & your videos are very cute & informative! Thank You ;)
No bird should ever be abused. It is very sad to hear that people abuse these beautiful creatures. If they can't handle the bird, they should relinquish the bird to a rescue.
Thank you for the comments. I would like to get more videos uploaded. The biggest problem is that Rachel seems to "know" when she's being recorded and then goes silent. I joke that Rachel says "I'm not your show monkey!"
YES INDEED! I can not stress this enough. Some days Rachel drives me crazy. At times it can be challenging to even find someone to watch her when we are away. Not just anyone will watch a large parrot, like they could a cat or dog. Rachel has been going to a nice woman who operates a bird rescue for when we go on vacation.
Please do your research on owning a macaw/large parrot. Understand that all parrots are not alike. Certain species require more attention or care than others. A large macaw requires more interaction than say a parakeet or a quaker.
I know what you mean about the traveling. We take our girl Buddy w/ us when we do day traveling along w/ a portable cage. This is only if we are gone for a weekend or so. If it is a week, we leave take her to my partners home where she is loved & cared for & trusts them enough to come out on their shoulders. We could never leave her for a week in her cage w/ someone coming, feeding her & leaving. When we're out shopping or to dinner, the TV is on at all times. She is queen of our home for sure.
we are about to purchase, a macaw. my question is we currently have a quaker parrot (pauly). are they friendly with other birds, the macaw we will buy is a hybrid macaw, green and blue, he is very friendly 1 year old. we fell in love with the bird, the bird shop also has 2 baby macaws, but i think we will stick with the 1 year old.. any advise is appreciated. and also thanks for the great videos.
Psittacosis may be rare in the US and you may have Rachel checked each year but that still does not rule out the issue that kissing a parrot such as a Macaw which are known to be carriers of this disease is an unhealthy practice. Viewers see these videos and decide to kiss their parrot and could be putting their health at risk by doing so. It only takes 1 bird to be infected to start a breakout...
i am getting one i have a African grey but i think i will get him/her a friend there is people selling blue and gold baby macaws for 200-300 in the uk so it is a lot cheaper other here.
You really need to know if you have a female bird. A simple blood test ($25/$35) can confirm the sex of your parrot. Anyone with a bird should have a 100% identification of the sex. Because females can become egg bound and could die if the egg cracks inside of them. You really need to know if you have a female and what to watch for if there are showing signs of not being able to pass an egg.
Does Rachel get jealous of your girlfriends / dates ? Haha i was just curious if she bit you when you had a date over :P Rachel was like " Oh hell no ! " HaHa

I love how informative you are in this video. I had a B&G named Oliver and he LOVED your videos. Unfortunately he passed away a year ago.

Little feet?! I call them monster toes!
My hyacinth macaws were 10,000 dallers a peace
$2000? More like $7500 where I am. Where I am, $2000 gets you a brown Labrador puppy with a bit of change.

Brown labs are also beautiful all animals are

LOL! Maybe your B&G wants to know if YOU taste like chicken!
And you think kissing your parrot is a healthy practice? Great way to catch Pssitacosis right here
your cute do u have anyone
Im jealous of the bird -_-
I would not recommend it at your age. Macaws can be a lot of work, and demanding for attention.
Does Rachel get jealous of your girlfriends / dates ? Haha i was just curious if she bit you when you had a date over :P Rachel was like " Oh hell no ! " HaHa
