I'm Indian and I support the Farmers on this matter. Let me put that out first. Sometimes the laws passed out by the Government might be correct, But what if people still rebelled against it cause it would make things hard. eg: people who don't were masks Don't get me wrong, I support the Farmers and don't like the big corporations cashing on that sector. Yes only one person scaled and replaced the flag but many others scaled the red fort, destroyed property in the red fort compound and were brandishing swords inside delhi. Well if you look on all developed countries the percentage of people working in the farm industry is far less than 50 % , so the law which is in place now in India is making the food more expensive by guaranteeing a minimum price to be paid to the farmers. I dont know what is going on behind the scenes, but on the outside it looks like the people of India are to benefit from this change. ( but I also understand that in politics it isnt always as straight forward)

It tells that for further reform or complaint related to corporates the case would go under board which would be either corrupt or take a long time or even won't allow the farmers to speak. That is the main reason why farmers are protesting.
Since we'll never know how many people watched the show, my guess was that not enough people watched it. Was it good? Absolutely. Is that good enough for Netflix? Of course not. They're known to cancel shows after 2 seasons since they don't want to renew contracts with the people working on the show and the actors. Hopefully he does something like Patriot Act in the future.

There is a difference between raising issue & doing something else...if someone care about justice he also see the other side...I am born to a farmer...my family is still in the agri business....I know the grassroots issues that are plaguing Indian farming from ages.. there might be case that these laws might not do good for few states but there is no compulsion about anything in the provisions... still you could protest....but if you would check video is starting with the figures of 250 million farmers were involved in the protests...I mean 25 cr... @@GGXIAO this is not a human rights violation government and farmer protest leaders had many peaceful talks to reach common ground cause the old system was failing and farmers themselves demanded some form of reforms first. But everything changed when foreign-based Khalistan separatist(a bunch of guys wants to make a new country out of India because they believe their religious guru wanted his own country) get involved and turned the protest into violence through misinformation. That's why the government turned off the internet for less than 12 hours even though wifi was still working properly the whole time.

I appreciate people trying to understand the issue from all over the world. But problem with Indian media is that they only present half of the fact that support their agenda. I am talking about each and every news channel here! So you can't rely on one source here. You got to understand both the aspects of a story. Specially people trying to see india from outside. Anyway, the fact which is absolutely wrong here is that every farmer do not get to sell their crops on MSP. My father is a farmer and I knew it even when I was a kid. MSP or minimum support price is offer by goverment of india to farmers for selected crops. Government procure these crops for public distribution system which supply essential to poorest of poor for about 1 Rupee! Only about 6% of the crops sold in Mandis are procured at MSP. GOI tries to compensate farmers fairly by taking the burden to compensate farmers above the market price and at the same time feed poorest atmost free of cost. This system is not from today. It is there for years. Rate of rest about 94% of the produce is decided by handfull of people called adtis which later sell it to corporates and big traders. Point to be noted here is this offer is always below the MSP that GOI offers. By not some percent or margin, it could be less than the cost price at times. Intial intend was to get these adtis in competition and get better price for farmers but these people gang up and decide price to buy for a day. As of now farmers can only sell their crop to the mandis designated to their area and at the price adtis decide! Once farmers enter the mandis with their crops, they rarely return without selling it. Whatsoever price is offered!! I have heard it many times. Even when market price is good, my father sold his crop to these people in half of the price. Imagine why Poor farmers are poor even today. Another ridiculous thing is farmers decide what they want to grow. Fair enough! However, problem arises when a lot of farmers try to sell the same thing at the end of the season. Which course drive the market price down and farmers get nothing. In another senario they do not produce a particular crop due to which the market price shoot up. So there are zillion other things like corruption where traders buy crops at lowest price possible from area where price are lowest and sell at MSP to GOI! Every farmer want GOI to set a lowest offer price. But I know it can't be done in a day or may be in years. Not without disturbing the economics of this county in a big way. I mean it could really mess it up!

Sorry, you owe to do the research right and then announce it to the world Mr Noah as otherwise you only fuel mistrust and hatred further intentionally or unintentionally like the politicians who are playing with the farmers emotions now by misleading them... There is nothing wrong in the laws, the Supreme Court of justice upheld it and you ain't helping either as the govt is struggling to make it's change management policies right which they screwed up earlier.

Even though it got invented here but it's like a forgotten art form, though it is getting revived but way-way behind the way you think it is. Coming back to the* patience, yes the hardships with which these farmers lives is what is giving them strength. Hardwork is their daily routine and getting almost nothing after the hardwork is what the life of a farmer is and this is what is giving an upper hand to the protesting farmers over the politicians who lives in luxury. The only concern is that the government has blocked the highways and creating a narrative using the media that it is the farmers who has blocked the highways and trying to turn the local people of the localities where these protest sites are against the farmers as those people are facing issues in daily commuting to their work and back. So far, these farmers has come a long way and now it is* like a new challenge thrown at them by the government, let's see how they fight it and change the narrative. As an Indian, it's absolutely terrible that we who have been hyping about US elections are telling people to stay out of our politics. However, the farmer's protest has raised a lot of controversial issues, such as the involvement of PJF, WSO,(Greta's deleted tweet) hoisting Khalistani flags at the red fort(yes, there's a confusion regarding that, but nevertheless this angle cannot be ignored), misinformation, protests from not the farmers but exploitative rich middlemen, and the striking acceptance of the laws by farmers from all twenty four states except Punjab and Haryana raise serious questions about the 'farmer's' protests. I suggest everyone do their research before commenting, not only people from other countries, but Indians too.

For everyone, this is not so black and white. The law is suppose to provide free market for the farmers to sell their produce. Currently they are suppose to sell it off to only monopoly of Government controlled markets (Mandi). Corruption is rampant in these markets. You also have commission agent (Arthis) who take 40-50% commission of your profit for striking the deal. As a farmer and a seller of perishable goods, more than often the negotiating terms are not on your side. You end up selling your produce at a heavy discount + the high commisions of the Arthi. Yes the government provides MSP (Minimum support price) for select few crops, but with corruption you can't except it without greasing few palms. Most of the farmers that you see in Delhi protesting, are from Punjab State (pro congress, an opposition party), Argiculture is one of the biggest driver of Punjab state, so is the ecosystem build around it, the Middlemen etc. It's also argued that some of crowd in the Delhi protesting was of Arthis. With the policy promoting free-market-trade, Arthis will be hit from day one!. Yes there were smallish protests that poped out in other states, but nothing like at Delhi's scale, why farmers in rest of India didn't protest like in Delhi. There are serveral other political angles to the protest, there were separatist slogans raised (Khalistan?), Candian ambassador to India was seen to be involved in these protest (voilating diplomatics rules), Canadian PM was very vocal about these protest too, which is very strange because Canada actively opposes the MSP and other subsidy that government provides to farmers in WTO. So they are not pro-farmer either. Canada's involement is more like soft power arm twisting. As of now, leaving few states (including Punjab), the new laws are effective. As a result, now you have farmers of Punjab going to the free markets of the neighbouring state (Haryana) to sell their produce. As with Rihana, Mia, Greeta, it's already investigated and revealed that they were provided a toolkit for money to raise the farmers protest at Global level to tarnish India's growing image..

The three farm bills are already in place and working fine as of now and they are part of congress , bjp, ncf parties 2019 election manifesto. ex farmer minister of ncp and present congress chief minister of punjab also supported the same reforms in the past. Now all oppositon parties change their stand and making farmers scape goat. 2. post dialogue with farmers and govt ,On december 9th clarified with 10 point amendment that all the doubts farmers posed and will be tabled in next session of parliament. But protesting farmers unions change stand after dec 9th and want full repeal. 3. In 2019 farmers can't sell their produced rice/wheat/vegetables etc out side of the district or county and cant sell to any one outside of the APMC market yards/mandis and farmer has to pay 8.5 percent fees( 3% to market yard improvement, 3% to district development , 2.5% to licensed commision agents). In some markets they collect both from seller and buyer each 8.5% . These new 2020 farm laws allows farmers to sell to any where in india to any one . no restriction. It is upto local government to charge needed cess or fees. 4. In 2019 only 10% of total agriculture produce (mainly wheat and rice)was bought by government agency FCI (Food Corporation of India as a stockpile for emergeny security) . 85% was purchased by private buyers . In 2019 only 15% of produce of total agriculture was purchased at minimum support price (MSP) and rest was purchased at lower price. Till 2010 the minimum support price was lower than the international price of the goods. After 2010 the minimum support price was increased higher than international price and no exporter is buying at msp except govt agency and all godowns of FCI agency are full with 4.5 trillion tonnes of wheat and rice . 5. who is at loss due to this farm bills of 2020 are A. punjab state governments who charge 3% cess for district developement will loose around 15000 millions (1500 crores) indian rupees per year income. B. the punjab licensed commision agents (who are mainly punjabi sikh jat caste landlords )who get 2.5% charge per transaction thro markets will loose 1000 crores (10000 million) rupees per year only in punjab state. c. Other than punjab and haryana no other state charge district fees and market cess and they charge only commision agent fees. Some states there are no markets/mandis like in kerala (since 1980) and bihar (since 2008). 6. The funding for protest is happening by charging 500 rupees per farmer . 80% farmers own only less than 2 hectres /5 acre land. 7. The foreign punjab seperatist/secissionist group sikh for justice announced 1 millon dollars as donation and indian banks stoped the distribution asking account holder to show FCRA ( Foreign control regulatory) registrants for permission 8. All want farm reforms. Punjab and Haryana farmers unions want to repeal and rest of indian country farmers are happy that they can sell anywhere. I think if central/union govt gives that 1500 crores to punjab govt per year and 1000 crore to punjab commision agents it will stop. 9. In 2021 january govt gave a option to protesting farmers union that it will hold the laws till 2 years until joint committe of farmers and govt will finalize the law clauses that will benefit farmers or not. But unions are adament.

If we put European price tag on our produce, it will constitute around 30-35% of our GDP which is not bad. If we take value added index instead of GDP index, farming sector is doing very well entirely on their own. This considering government did almost nothing for farming compared to industry (Modi gvmt included). The very reason it being small farmer industry and not capitalist one. USA did a lot for farming precisely because it is owned by corporation. So the development is not because of corporate but because of government support. So we should not focus on reducing people in agriculture but providing enough support for ones existing and only diverting unemployed labour to other industries.

Except few north Indian states everywhere the population is either falling or staying constant. Then again the rising population in UP and Bihar does export lot of skilled and unskilled labour which is in high demand in South. The average fertility rate in India is around 2.1-2.3 which is just about right. You can think yourself how many people you know who are below 30 and have more than 2 kids? Such families were lot more common few decades back. Now you rarely see new couples with 3 kids...

The farmers are being provided with misinformation from the first day by the opposition party...like the main reason why the farmers are protesting is because they fear that the minimum prices to sell their goods will be dictated by corporate cuz b4 we had something called msp(minimum price to be paid to farmers) but the truth is that that law still exists and the pm also reiterated it recently but none of the media paid attention to it
And in the name of protest which the court had allowed them (as long its non violent)on republic day an antinationist flag was flown on the red fort which like the capital in usa

Well if you look on all developed countries the percentage of people working in the farm industry is far less than 50 % , so the law which is in place now in India is making the food more expensive by guaranteeing a minimum price to be paid to the farmers. I dont know what is going on behind the scenes, but on the outside it looks like the people of India are to benefit from this change. ( but I also understand that in politics it isnt always as straight forward)

@@GGXIAO this is not a human rights violation government and farmer protest leaders had many peaceful talks to reach common ground cause the old system was failing and farmers themselves demanded some form of reforms first. But everything changed when foreign-based Khalistan separatist(a bunch of guys wants to make a new country out of India because they believe their religious guru wanted his own country) get involved and turned the protest into violence through misinformation. That's why the government turned off the internet for less than 12 hours even though wifi was still working properly the whole time.

I appreciate people trying to understand the issue from all over the world. But problem with Indian media is that they only present half of the fact that support their agenda. I am talking about each and every news channel here! So you can't rely on one source here. You got to understand both the aspects of a story. Specially people trying to see india from outside.
Anyway, the fact which is absolutely wrong here is that every farmer do not get to sell their crops on MSP. My father is a farmer and I knew it even when I was a kid.
MSP or minimum support price is offer by goverment of india to farmers for selected crops. Government procure these crops for public distribution system which supply essential to poorest of poor for about 1 Rupee! Only about 6% of the crops sold in Mandis are procured at MSP. GOI tries to compensate farmers fairly by taking the burden to compensate farmers above the market price and at the same time feed poorest atmost free of cost. This system is not from today. It is there for years.
Rate of rest about 94% of the produce is decided by handfull of people called adtis which later sell it to corporates and big traders. Point to be noted here is this offer is always below the MSP that GOI offers. By not some percent or margin, it could be less than the cost price at times.
Intial intend was to get these adtis in competition and get better price for farmers but these people gang up and decide price to buy for a day. As of now farmers can only sell their crop to the mandis designated to their area and at the price adtis decide! Once farmers enter the mandis with their crops, they rarely return without selling it. Whatsoever price is offered!! I have heard it many times. Even when market price is good, my father sold his crop to these people in half of the price.
Imagine why Poor farmers are poor even today.
Another ridiculous thing is farmers decide what they want to grow. Fair enough! However, problem arises when a lot of farmers try to sell the same thing at the end of the season. Which course drive the market price down and farmers get nothing. In another senario they do not produce a particular crop due to which the market price shoot up.
So there are zillion other things like corruption where traders buy crops at lowest price possible from area where price are lowest and sell at MSP to GOI!
Every farmer want GOI to set a lowest offer price. But I know it can't be done in a day or may be in years. Not without disturbing the economics of this county in a big way. I mean it could really mess it up!
I dont know if Trevor's team made an effort to know this or the GOI point.
Here Trevor Noah and his team went wrong... Sorry, you owe to do the research right and then announce it to the world Mr Noah as otherwise you only fuel mistrust and hatred further intentionally or unintentionally like the politicians who are playing with the farmers emotions now by misleading them... There is nothing wrong in the laws, the Supreme Court of justice upheld it and you ain't helping either as the govt is struggling to make it's change management policies right which they screwed up earlier.

Hardwork is their daily routine and getting almost nothing after the hardwork is what the life of a farmer is and this is what is giving an upper hand to the protesting farmers over the politicians who lives in luxury.
The only concern is that the government has blocked the highways and creating a narrative using the media that it is the farmers who has blocked the highways and trying to turn the local people of the localities where these protest sites are against the farmers as those people are facing issues in daily commuting to their work and back.
So far, these farmers has come a long way and now it is* like a new challenge thrown at them by the government, let's see how they fight it and change the narrative.

As an Indian, it's absolutely terrible that we who have been hyping about US elections are telling people to stay out of our politics. However, the farmer's protest has raised a lot of controversial issues, such as the involvement of PJF, WSO,(Greta's deleted tweet) hoisting Khalistani flags at the red fort(yes, there's a confusion regarding that, but nevertheless this angle cannot be ignored), misinformation, protests from not the farmers but exploitative rich middlemen, and the striking acceptance of the laws by farmers from all twenty four states except Punjab and Haryana raise serious questions about the 'farmer's' protests. I suggest everyone do their research before commenting, not only people from other countries, but Indians too.

For everyone, this is not so black and white. The law is suppose to provide free market for the farmers to sell their produce. Currently they are suppose to sell it off to only monopoly of Government controlled markets (Mandi). Corruption is rampant in these markets. You also have commission agent (Arthis) who take 40-50% commission of your profit for striking the deal. As a farmer and a seller of perishable goods, more than often the negotiating terms are not on your side. You end up selling your produce at a heavy discount + the high commisions of the Arthi. Yes the government provides MSP (Minimum support price) for select few crops, but with corruption you can't except it without greasing few palms.
Most of the farmers that you see in Delhi protesting, are from Punjab State (pro congress, an opposition party), Argiculture is one of the biggest driver of Punjab state, so is the ecosystem build around it, the Middlemen etc. It's also argued that some of crowd in the Delhi protesting was of Arthis. With the policy promoting free-market-trade, Arthis will be hit from day one!. Yes there were smallish protests that poped out in other states, but nothing like at Delhi's scale, why farmers in rest of India didn't protest like in Delhi.
There are serveral other political angles to the protest, there were separatist slogans raised (Khalistan?), Candian ambassador to India was seen to be involved in these protest (voilating diplomatics rules), Canadian PM was very vocal about these protest too, which is very strange because Canada actively opposes the MSP and other subsidy that government provides to farmers in WTO. So they are not pro-farmer either. Canada's involement is more like soft power arm twisting.
As of now, leaving few states (including Punjab), the new laws are effective. As a result, now you have farmers of Punjab going to the free markets of the neighbouring state (Haryana) to sell their produce.
As with Rihana, Mia, Greeta, it's already investigated and revealed that they were provided a toolkit for money to raise the farmers protest at Global level to tarnish India's growing image..

1. The three farm bills are already in place and working fine as of now
and they are part of congress , bjp, ncf parties 2019 election manifesto.
ex farmer minister of ncp and present congress chief minister of punjab also
supported the same reforms in the past. Now all oppositon parties change their stand and making farmers scape goat.
2. post dialogue with farmers and govt ,On december 9th clarified with 10 point
amendment
that all the doubts farmers posed and will be tabled in next session of
parliament. But protesting farmers unions change stand after dec 9th
and want full repeal.
3. In 2019 farmers can't sell their
produced rice/wheat/vegetables etc out side of the district or county
and cant sell to any one outside of the APMC market yards/mandis and
farmer has to pay 8.5 percent fees( 3% to market yard improvement, 3% to
district development , 2.5% to licensed commision agents). In some
markets they collect both from seller and buyer each 8.5% . These new
2020 farm laws allows farmers to sell to any where in india to any one .
no restriction. It is upto local government to charge needed cess or
fees.
4. In 2019 only 10% of total agriculture produce (mainly
wheat and rice)was bought by government agency FCI (Food Corporation of
India as a stockpile for emergeny security) . 85% was purchased by
private buyers . In 2019 only 15% of produce of total agriculture was
purchased at minimum support price (MSP) and rest was purchased at lower
price. Till 2010 the minimum support price was lower than the
international price of the goods. After 2010 the minimum support price
was increased higher than international price and no exporter is
buying at msp except govt agency and all godowns of FCI agency are full with 4.5 trillion tonnes of wheat and rice .
5. who is at loss due to this farm bills of 2020 are
A. punjab state governments who charge 3% cess for district
developement will loose around 15000 millions (1500 crores) indian
rupees per year income.
B. the punjab licensed commision agents (who are mainly punjabi sikh jat caste landlords )who get 2.5%
charge per transaction thro markets will loose 1000 crores (10000
million) rupees per year only in punjab state.
c. Other than punjab and haryana no other state charge district fees and market cess
and they charge only commision agent fees. Some states there are no
markets/mandis like in kerala (since 1980) and bihar (since 2008).
6. The funding for protest is happening by charging 500 rupees per farmer .
80% farmers own only less than 2 hectres /5 acre land.
7. The foreign punjab seperatist/secissionist group sikh for justice announced 1
millon dollars as donation and indian banks stoped the
distribution asking account holder to show FCRA ( Foreign control regulatory) registrants for permission
8. All want farm reforms. Punjab and Haryana farmers unions want to repeal
and rest of indian country farmers are happy that they can sell
anywhere. I think if central/union govt gives that 1500 crores to punjab
govt per year and 1000 crore to punjab commision agents it will stop.
9. In 2021 january govt gave a option to protesting farmers union that it will hold the laws till 2 years until
joint committe of farmers and govt will finalize the law clauses that will benefit farmers or not. But unions are adament.

I kindly request someone to get me to the copy of the farm reforms proposed. Because, in my country, India, the papers and the content on it, is usually in English which is the administrative language (both fortunately and unfortunately); and hence, the message that's conveyed to a common man is always WITH the filters of translations that are added by the agenda based organizational members, whose sole intention is to create chaos which is when the politicians get to be heard. Population control Bill is the need of the hour with India's increasing population soon to be surpassed China, and limited resources, people will have no choice but to either get into farming or leave the country. But unfortunately the same groups behind theses protests will be protesting that as well. We tried Nehruvian Socialism for 40-45 years and which brought our country on the brink of bankruptcy untill 1992 when market had to open for private sector and globalisation. Some are still in pre 1992 phase.

If our industry and mining sector was as robust as US, about 20% of that population will happily switch over as they are mere labourers in farm with minimum or no land of their own. On value added side, farming accounts for just 19% because food prices are kept very low in India because of low per capita. This is exactly why farmers want to export whenever possible. If we put European price tag on our produce, it will constitute around 30-35% of our GDP which is not bad. If we take value added index instead of GDP index, farming sector is doing very well entirely on their own. This considering government did almost nothing for farming compared to industry (Modi gvmt included). The very reason it being small farmer industry and not capitalist one. USA did a lot for farming precisely because it is owned by corporation. So the development is not because of corporate but because of government support. So we should not focus on reducing people in agriculture but providing enough support for ones existing and only diverting unemployed labour to other industries.

Except few north Indian states everywhere the population is either falling or staying constant. Then again the rising population in UP and Bihar does export lot of skilled and unskilled labour which is in high demand in South. The average fertility rate in India is around 2.1-2.3 which is just about right. You can think yourself how many people you know who are below 30 and have more than 2 kids? Such families were lot more common few decades back. Now you rarely see new couples with 3 kids...

The reason why Bihari farmers are poor is bcos Land per capita is very low there, every year there is flood so a lot of destruction. And the last is the ration food of 2rs killo! Where do you think these MSP purchased crops are sold by govt? They purchase it from Punjab and Haryana at MSP and then sell it cheap in rations in Bihar to get votes. The local farmers can't compete with such prices and hence are forced to sell at a very cheap rate. Hence the benefits of Punjab and Haryana kissan becomes a curse for Bihar kissan.
