  • Thanks for taking the time to watch me dive into restoring this motorcycle!
I wanted to go a little outside of my comfort zone and attempt to edit a video for people to enjoy. I'm not a pro with a camera, or a wrench for that matter. I just want to document the work that I enjoy. I hope you have fun watching me fight this carburetor. Getting the cables separated from the throttle butterfly was a real pain.
In the future, I plan to have videos that go more in depth, and show you more than just a few parts being removed. This was more of a practice run for me in my editing journey.
The plan is to restore this motorcycle to factory looks and performance.
Feel free to comment suggestions of what I can do better, or what you would like to see more of in the future!

I still have a GL 500 from 1983 in Germany and have been driving it since 1990. It is in fantastic condition, never has anything caused any problems. So this year she will be 40 years old. I think I will make it a nice birthday party.
    Good luck with the build.

Well worth restoring. These bikes go forever, and are really beautiful. Can only appreciate in value.

This bike can sit and idle indefinitely. There is a fan in front of the motor behind the radiator pulling air through it. Honda hit the ball out of the park with this bike. Now then, look at the turbo models. Honda innovated tons of things with just the turbo mods. This is a very versatile platform. 50hp is ideal for a cruiser bike. Just think of what they could do today with fuel injection and mapping.

I had watched this video like 100times, and every time I see and learn something new. I just got a 1982, and I am struggling to restore it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Awesome! feel free to ask questions! A manual is a tremendous help, but other enthusiasts sometimes have more tips and tricks than a manual can ever teach you!

That looks like a bike that can be driven to the end of the earth! Stock will be good for that.

    Any update on this bikeproject?

I got caught up with my full time job and finished it off camera. It got spot treated with paint where there was rust on the frame, and other components like the kickstand and exhaust power chamber. I installed brand new headers and a new set of gauges and had it looking mighty clean. I turned a $275 bike into an $1800 sale. I want to get better at documenting these builds. I bought another Honda of the same era that I'm going to make a video on soon! Sorry for the lack of content 😕

I just bought a GL500 a few days ago and need to replace the mechanical seal on the water pump bcuz an old owner used the wrong coolant and it wore away at the seal and the pipes that are black that cover the connection to the carburetor are cracking 😅 they have tape on them but idk if

@@josecardenas4388 so it definitely sounds like a project! Lol.
The pipes you're referencing are called intake manifolds. You can replace them easily just make sure you don't break the bolts off that hold them on. You also need to be sure when installing the carbs to lube them and heat up the rubber with a heat gun or hair dryer to aid in reinstallation. A lot of novice wrench turners will fail to seat the carbs into the manifolds correctly and it causes a ton of running issues.
With the water pump seal: I believe they're ceramic. They're a known issue on the gl500's. I highly recommend joining the cx500 forum. Theyre basically the same bike. The info you'll find there may save you a ton of time and money!
Good luck! And congratulations on your new (to you) Silverwing!
