Amen, Sister !! That's so beautiful to hear. And it's really touching to me, especially tonight- On this Christmas Eve 2020- As I just began a tradition this evening of singing this song to my kids and Grandchildren, even while we're apart -- And as long as there's technology to do so remotely, or I can be with them in the same room-- I'm going to keep singing it, Every Christmas Eve-- until I go to be With your Dad, and others like C. S. Lewis, Ravi Zacharias, John Robert Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr., and ALL the others who've left the Earth to be with the LORD Jesus, in person ! -Much Love, Because He First Loved us. My Uncle Edwin & My Aunt Delores sang this in our living room back in Christmas of 1986. Uncle Eddie as I sometimes call him, passed away this year back in July 2022. Each time I hear this song, I instantly thing of him. He and Aunt Dee Dee.🏡🎄🎁🎅 JKM.
I get to sing this hymn tomorrow evening at church. I learned it from the BEST, Mahalia Jackson, whose voice and style were in a class unmatched by anyone else. I pray that someday when I cross over, I will meet her and sing with her thru all eternity. ❤️🌟🥰
wow finally found this song. oh oh...whew.hi moma.thank you for this memory.my moma died jan 4 2004.whew.every day i stayed by her side. she would sing this song over an over..whew.l find this that has been in my head since her sickness in the hospital.on this date april 7 2013.i got to here it once again since2003 2004.what a blessing.
In the days before TH-cam et al, I was hired to sing this song on Christmas morning at a friend's church. I was given sheet music, but I had never heard the song before. I guess they expected me to sing the white-washed version of the notes printed on the page, rather than, y'know, with any emotion, because I got reprimanded for singing "too soulful." It was a Methodist church, primarily white congregation (as am I), and all I remember is that I did it "wrong." I'd forgotten about this song until tonight, and I am so, so thankful to have found this link! This is such a moving, beautiful song, and Mahalia's rendition brought tears to my eyes.
Sweet little Jesus boy, born in a manger Sweet little Holy Child, we didn't know who You were Long time ago it seems You were born Born in a manager Lord, sweet little Jesus boy Didn't know You'd come to save us all To take our sins away Our eyes were blind, we did not see We didn't know who You were You have shown us how And we are trying Master You have shown us how Even as You were dying This world treats You mean Lord Treats me mean too But that's how things are done down here We didn't know it was You Didn't know You'd come to save us all To take our sins away Our eyes were blind, we did not see We didn't know who You were
I love Ms. Jackson! Her voice is absolute gold! she reaches down in the far depths of your soul and makes you feel the music! I love the story of her life as she was always an upstanding Christian!
Sing it, Sis Mahalia!!! I always feel the Spirit when I hear Sis Mahalia perform as I experience with no other spiritual singers! Her beautifully sweet--- yet powerful rendition of this hymn-- sends chills up and down my spine!!!
This is one of my very favorites by Mahalia. My grandmother taught me to appreciate her and my mother has a Christmas record with her version of Silent Night. Which by the way is my favorite version of that song. She sang from the heart and soul and really I don't think that there has been anyone quite like her since. Thank you Mahalia for sharing your incredible gift and your now singing in God's heavenly choir.
Wish I could've heard her live. Imagine! 😯🙂 This song was composed in the 1930s by a man from my hometown of Pineville, Louisiana: Robert MacGimsey. He also wrote "Shadrack" - best recorded by Louis Armstrong.
I can still see Moma and Daddy and grandma and grandpa during Christmas this song and others were playing on the Hi-Fi all through the house. The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole the entire album. They all in heaven now I love and miss you all.
Thanks for posting this, wonderful footage of the mother of ALL voices. My grandmother have a Xmas LP of this song, along with other cuts by Mahalia and I tell ya 1joker88, it's a shame the younger generation doesn't know much about her. Thanx again!!
A friend asked for our favorite Christmas songs. This is my favorite sacred/gospel song for Christmas, or just for humming. This speaks to my soul, so much.
Sitting here, and started humming this song. I took it as sign to stop and listen to it. "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" by Mahalia Jackson. My, my, my, so powerful, so touching. "Sweet little Jesus boy They made you be born in a manger Sweet little holy child We didn't know who you were Didn't know you'd come to save us Lord To take our sins away Our eyes were blind, we could not see We didn't know who you were."

I remember my cousin, Elder George Williamson, singing this song as a young man. When he sang, It made lasting impact upon my life. It connects me with my roots. I know why America’s Religionosity along with the rest of the world 🌍 is SO off track. I had always thought that it was a so-called “Negro Spiritual” from the dark days of Jim Crow or darker yet days of Slavery until I googled it recently. Composed by Robert MacGimsey, often mistaken for a black composer who is said to have been influenced in his formative years by those who lived and worked for his parents.
Those , who believe in fake gods and goddess need to see jesus and come to him and his holy mother , only god and theotokos there are no other god rest and bless mahalias soul, well said!
I heard this song as a young husband and father in far away state, living in sub-standard housing I ,also with Maraha, identified at some level with yhe sweet little Jesus; born to save by dying for our sons. Sweet little holy child; I thank you and praise you!!!
please can anyone tell me about her organist and piano player can't find out anything on them excepts ones name was Edward and this voice can always climb into my soul daddy you loved her too happy birthday miss and love you
@stargenemolly No the message is that even to a holy person we are cruel or blind. Jesus was a simple carpenter and then a man with no possessions. because they did not understand him they mistreated a holy man, a kind man. so we should not repeat the same mistake. don't be blind youre fellow people.
The subtext of this song has always been troubling. The unexamined 'family value' here is that if we'd only KNOWN that the little boy was "Jesus, Son of God", we'd have treated him fine. Sooo... if this little boy hadn't BEEN the sweet little Jesus boy and we'd treated him like dirt, that would have been okay. How is it that we still don't know that ALL little boys and girls are actually sacred. And as James Baldwin said, the devil doesn't mess with little kids... we do.
My pastor sang this Christmas Eve. He’s got an amazing voice. I had never heard this song.
My daddy sang this song with that deep bass voice every Christmas eve. till God called him home.
My Daddy did the same thing! Sure miss him...
Your comment made me cry. Bless you. 💕

"We didn't know it was You." Some of the most powerful words ever sang because it is still timely today.

Only Mahalia Jackson. There will never be another one.

This song could have been written in 2022, some of us don’t know who Jesus is even today.
I have always loved Mahalia Jackson. All of her songs are sung as they come straight from her heart. Beautiful!
One of my all time favorites. Dunno why, but I since I was little, I just wanted Mahalia to give me a hug!
Turned on my radio this morning and this was on here in Greensboro. Blew me away. Incredible.
There's just nothing like the incredible heart and passion Mahalia Jackson brought to her singing.
Mahalia Jackson reminds so much of my mother and she touches my ❤ when she sings. I Love her so much just can't get enough of Mahalia Jackson.

I agree she sings it the best but there us another version that I grew up on that doesn't have the Jeaus dying verse .. I love them both.
heaven now has someone to teach the angels to sing!!!
Sweet little Jesus boy, born in a manger
Sweet little Holy Child, we didn't know who You were
Long time ago it seems You were born
Born in a manager Lord, sweet little Jesus boy
Didn't know You'd come to save us all
To take our sins away
Our eyes were blind, we did not see
We didn't know who You were
You have shown us how
And we are trying
Master You have shown us how
Even as You were dying
This world treats You mean Lord
Treats me mean too
But that's how things are done down here
We didn't know it was You
Didn't know You'd come to save us all
To take our sins away
Our eyes were blind, we did not see
We didn't know who You were
thanks your lyrics
Thank you,i never hear that song before, i am from the Caribbean.
This song tells the story of what Christmas is all about, and who could ever sing it better? I can't think of anyone.
