I got a few spots round on my screen, going to tackle that in the next week of so, but I love your idea of keeping the screen to put back in overnight is 10/10 🤙
Yeah, it rained that night too! Having done prep with pros on my T4, don’t use Kurust, it doesn’t work. Use a good etch primer on the metal and a 2k primer on top. Avoid aerosols if you can and spray a proper paint mix on. I used Halfords normal primer and the rust spots came back through after 12 months. Live and learn 😎👍
Hey dude great video! Im also from Falmouth! Im going to be doing this soon but mainly focusing on my arches, quick question... after you've sanded it back to bare metal and applied the kurust do you then sand/clean again before applying primer or apply it straight onto the kurust? Thanks
I applied it straight on bud, two years on and the rust spots have come back a bit. It's ok to buy some extra time but nothing beats getting a proper job done. I want to book my T4 in at Autostyl in Chacewater when I have the money to get a respray
@@shane555 Yes 100%. Wings off, treated, screen out, welding, the lot. They really get deep into things. I'll be taking mine there once ive finished all the tuning etc.
@@SpeedingTube yeah, I put Kurust on my arches and round the windscreen (whilst it was out) and 6 months later it had come back. Not as bad, but still back!
Hiya, I've got water in the foot well of our new T4 and I reckon I need to do at least 2 jobs, first the wing off to clear the crap out so it actually drains and then onto the windscreen! Where did you get your spray cans from to match the colour? Is it a specialist place or will somewhere like Mill Autos have it fella? Cheers.
You can get a kit on ebay that drains the water from the top of the bonnet better. It keeps the interior of the wings drier especially if leaves and stuff get stuck in them.
Great job dude....where were the rattle cans from? What did you do with the seam sealer on the roof where it stops at the top of the screen? Mine has rusted and looking crap!
Hey bud, my seam seals were ok so I just made sure I got the Kurust and zinc primer around it. I was quite lucky as the main rust areas were between those areas. I may run a light film of clear waxoil around the top before winter to help keep the water out. Without welding and taking the whole thing apart there's always going to be a bit of rust just waiting for it's moment to come back. T4 life! lol
speedingtube Yeah...I've been chasing the rust for the last couple of years....thinking of rollering Rustoleum Combi colour paint on after sorting out the rust this time!!!
I'm in serious thoughts about getting myself a vw t4. Is there any major issues i should look at when inspecting one before i buy it ? And what engine You could suggest to look at ?
It's a tough question to answer as everyone uses them for different things. The 102bhp one is stronger with the stronger 02G gearbox but a poorly serviced one of those may be less reliable than a basic 1.9TD. These vans are getting old so service history and a good once over is essential as with any old vehicle. Also check the arches and windscreen for rust as getting it sorted properly runs into thousands. Good luck! :-)
Way too late to say this now but I bought a T4 new in '03, been brilliant until '23, I think letting it stand through lockdown buggered it, have had endless trouble, even the turbo packed up. RAC tow truck man said he rescues more Vdubs than any other type of van.... Mine still not running right, can't believe how many problems I see on TH-cam. I thought I was buying a vehicle for life when I got it, now I'm not so sure. Btw, can't believe the number of moorings in Falmouth these days, you should have seen how few there were in '78!
Great video, very helpful 👍🏻

@@shane555 The Kurust was also a bad move, seems 2k primer is the best

@@makjames1714 cheers Mak. I think I've seen them, some sort of tube system I reckon. I'll have another look 👍
