    It literally never fails. If you have a huge bucket of coolant under a truck, everything you drop has a homing beacon right into that sumbitch. Up to and including a whole harmonic dampener apparently lolol

    Nice commitment to fixing it right. I cringed when you left the light on in the welding cabinet, thinking of a dead battery. lol The crank pully falling in the coolant was classic. At least it wasn't gear oil.

    Who would take that all apart and not replace the timing cover. Their is a lot of work to do to get it right but it will be all worth while in the end, when the engine is good it is worth putting time in to it and no better man to do it than you Warren.

    I can't believe someone would take that all away apart and not fix it right. Any job worth doing is worth doing right the first time. You are probably right they just cobbled it together so sell it.

      @dclfarms6204 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Mark Dobson I buy and fix farm tractors, and you would be amazed at how much time and work people will do to save 2 minutes time and then bitch when it breaks again. I’ve never understood why people don’t just fix it right the first time.

    • @markreetz1001
      @markreetz1001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I figure that it was a fleet truck and the company knew they were selling and weren't going to put another dime into it. But I also think that is likely going to be the only engine issue he'll have--I hope anyway. I mean, if you don't see a lot of other cobble jobs on it, it seems that lone issue will be all you have. And I could be all wrong, but Good luck Warren!

  • @matwalker6336
    @matwalker6336 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I have fixed several things like that with liquid aluminum or JB weld. I would say they just did not dremel it out well enough and clean it well enough. Very much like real welding. If it takes no load and only holds oil I can see very well why they did not do it your way... they just did not pay enough attention to the repair... we both know that is very common.

    • @matwalker6336
      @matwalker6336 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Last comment half way through... now done... wow I am stunned you took that thing apart. You knew what you were getting into... I did not. I swear to god dremel. brake clean, JB weld and you could have fixed that right up. Sure as hell would have been good enough. As a general rule I like the fact that you want to fix things right but at some point the diminishing return is just too great. 100 000 miles on a service truck and it is going to wheep.. not leak or drip but some oil is reasonable. I say again. I am glad there is a least on mechanic left out there that fixes things properly. cheers

    Thanks for the interesting video's thats going to make a great truck in the end. Parts on back order is a strong possibility depending on suppliers, as that 12v is getting old now in manufacturers/ stocking parts terms. I have a 1000 series perk apart like this in a 2006 or so 6270 Massey at the moment here in Canada. The bad coolant ate the timing case dumping all the coolant in the oil pan. She's a right mess inside with all the sludge, the loader brackets make it real hard to get the pan off to clean it out to. We went to order parts, yeah back ordered to Europe for 3 weeks. I've had MF tell me hub parts were on back order for 3 months as they were having another batch made in Europe to, luckily that wasn't a feed lot tractor, and it sat most of the winter in the guys shed not used every year!.
    Ok so this 6270 guys Landini loader tractor needs a clutch we'll fix that instead, as he needs one machine running quick. We go to order the clutch and find there aren't any in North America, It is apparently made from unobtainium from a small family mine in Italy for "f" sake . Luckily Mcormick use the same clutch it was only 2 weeks out!.
    I'm kinda glad both these tractors sat next to each other in the guys shed, I'd be buggered for shop space here while waiting that long for parts. I'm finding more of this stuff for 2006 and before isn't on the shelf or easy to get unless it's John Deere. I just hate their dealers attitudes round here, and fix mainly other makes. Take care

    In the late 90's and early 00's we ran a lot of expediter trucks with those 12 valve B 5.9's. The engines were very reliable and could easily run 500k+ miles before needing rebuilds, but timing cover oil leaks were very common- to the point they were annoying. They would be fixed right the first time, only to have to come back and keep fixing them for leaks again and again.

    O&M budget. They had money for salaries but not for parts. You can pay to have someone spend time on temporary fix but you don't have enough money for the parts. I know, it sounds stupid, but they'll have a maximum purchase limit (like $50) before it has to be approved by any number of other people. If it's not approved you can't buy the part - so, you do the next best thing - make up a temporary fix.

  • @azdodge7
    @azdodge7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm not so sure that was a KDP problem. The KDP normaly falls on top of the cam gear that rotates counter clockwise forcing the pin between the case and gear under the fan hub and busting out or crackng there. That crack you got is right at the bolt hole at the edge of the block on the bottom. Looks more like the support bracket bolts being missing was a prior issue and the weight and vibration of the p pump and compressor power steering assembly hanging on that cover busted it over time till they caught it being to late.

    • @duanecreativemachine
      @duanecreativemachine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AzDodge i agree and I was just trying to type this and well, I don't know what happened. The kdp usually goes to the left and breaks the case right there. I don't think there is enough room to get down where your case is cracked without exiting stage left. I've also seen them broken in that area when someone gets a little to frisky prying on it to get the case off.

      @@logtrukn I guess you can't figure out I was joking, I work on and drive trucks all day long, around the forest industry that widely used old 2 strokes. Green grenades had their place back in the 70s and 80s they burn too much fucking fuel, you would go broke running a truck with a Detroit, plus the fact they make more noise than power. One guy I knew he used to have a 5 ton Ford with the 5.9 12 valve truck grossed 35,000lbs 3-4 times a week engine did fine, slow as hell on the hills climbing them in first gear. He always had one engine rebuilt and ready to go he swapped engines every year to 2 years.

    That kind of drippy, blobby look to the epoxy, I'm wondering if maybe they just pulled the front cover off to clean up the pin and just "repaired" the cover in place.
    It's the kind of thing I'd have done if I were expecting major work in the near future, but far enough out to not justify moving it up. Make it work for 6-12 months, then do your in-frame or whatever. Save pulling all that shit twice, especially if it really needed to get back on the road *yesterday.* (And given that you got it at auction, there was also likely an element of "It's not gonna be our problem soon".)
    Obviously from the damage you saw after pulling the cover that's not a great idea, but . . ..

      Those cheaper LEDs if you can take the front off and put dielectric grease around the seal and don't pressure wash it out of the seam just wipe to clean they last a way longer moister inside is what kills them most of the time

    • @Azlehria
      @Azlehria 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went even further down: $4 LED floods off eBay. Nice cast heatsink bodies, never had a problem as bumper/trailer lights.
      Biggest thing I've run into with automotive electronics, and not just the cheap stuff, is bad joints. Open 'em up and touch up the solder, make sure you got good crimps even if you have to replace the pins, and they'll last a lot longer. I've even had to do that with German-made BMW DMEs, Japanese-made Honda ICUs . . ..
