A Great encapsulation of the last two years. In the movie Becket the character played by Peter O’Toole says to his knights “will no one rid us of this meddlesome priest?” Is it not time for someone to rid us of this treasonous presence?
We knew he'd throw a tantrum when he lost. We never knew he would steal boxes of secret documents, many of which are now missing. He keeps getting worse, somehow.

I was born within days of Congress passing the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, which sent regular US Army troops to Vietnam.
I remember watching the Watergate trials as a kid and wondering what the hell was wrong with the country.
Little did I imagine how screwed up we were then and how much more exponentially screwed up we would become.
Living in a dyed-in-the-wool red state as I do, I shudder to think about what comes next.
At least the thought that I will probably be dead within the next 20 years or so gives me some comfort. At that point, I'll be beyond caring.
Until then, the existential nightmare continues.
By all means, slap a band-aid on our crumbling democracy and vote your conscience, vote for reason, vote for compassion, vote for the future, because your grandchildren's lives depend on it.

I regret not watching his stuff religiously back then; I only got into it recently because Sis was watching it and trying not to laugh late at night, and SHE got into it because Dad kept talking about it to her during her visiting him before he passed away in December 2021. He was very fond of Colbert's work, ever since the Daily Show with John Stewart.

Although this was painful to watch I think it’s important that we remember what we went through and how we felt during that election and how President Trump acted. Disrespecting the office. Caring only for his fame and having fun riling people up for his personal pleasure. He’s a sick guy. I don’t understand how so many Americans couldn’t see his pathology, his Vanity and instability before the first election, let alone after it. The Supply Closet Seasons were some of the best season of the Late Show. Who could forget the running jokes like the Vaccine song that kept getting longer, the misreading of the scripts and then insisting it being kept in, or the Annoying I Win I Win Trump? They're classics that can never be replicated!

This was the show at its best. Focused and not influenced by the audience overreacting to the wit of the material. I know it was never the design of the show. But it worked so well . Imo it hasn't been on this level since

These monologues were special for me. During the worst of Covid that year, I took my dog for run around at my grandmother's house for her walks. I would sit on her back porch, with a sunset mountain in view, laughing hard at Stephen's jokes.
Those were cold, dark days in some ways, but humor like this kept it going, especially with the election ending on a good note (before January, anyhow). And I can still feel being back there watching this again. Thank you, Stephen!

It feels good to get those laughs again, though. However, the live show he did on January 6th could only have been done in the storage room. Even if the jokes were of the "funny because it is sad" variety, it was not a time for live belly laughs. Granted, it kind of is still too soon to laugh about it, but there is enough distance for some people.
Plus, that January 6th live show was the most angry I had ever seen Stephen. I thought the night Trump made that speech right before it was called for Biden (which Stephen had enough honor not to show one frame of) was the angriest he had been, but oh how none of us knew how much worse it would get.

With all due respect, nothing of it was hard to predict. For someone who lies this much, Trump is actually pretty up front about the shitty things he wants to do.

I'm always baffled when cultists claim I have some warped, CNN-twisted view of Trump. But I'm german. I don't even watch CNN. I did, however, watch Trump himself. Trump is what made me hate Trump. These flashbacks to the covid episodes brings back terrible memories. But also is a revelation of how great Stephen did on these difficult episodes. It was hard to kind of digest it all back then and with the silence of the audience. Ugh... what a different universe we were launched into.

I actually loved all these in the heyday pandemic-era shows from late shows. Fewer unnecessary clappings amd audience wasting time. Seth did it best.

I’ve got to be honest, my favorite part that literally had me laughing out loud was the bit about swearing in BTS as president, lol. If it was up to ARMY, they would be.
When all of this went down, I could only watch Stephen and Seth, because they were able to deliver the news and be allowed to say what they thought while still giving us some humor. I couldn’t watch the actual news sites, because it was too upsetting. All of my news came from Late Night tv, lol.
I'm German, and watching Stephen over the last years was a really educational way to get a feeling of what politics in the US is like today. Thank you Stephen for making me laugh - and cry at the same time because I realized how rotten to the core the US really has gotten, not only politically.
I always wanted to visit, but especially after the "handling" of covid by the government and the absolute ignorance of so many people in general about the virus and topics like rasism, gun control or even human decency. Now I never want to set a foot into this country that is not even able to educate citizens about basic health information let alone other issues in life.

I’m kind of expecting some future HBO limited series about all the “behind closed doors” events between Election Night 2020 and January 6th showing just what exactly went down in the final days of the Trump White House and everything he tried to desperately hang onto power.
It’s insane just how much we’re learning about not just the former President but all those who enabled him during those two months in the lead up to January 6th, including all the stuff we haven’t seen or learned of yet. Between the January 6th committee and all the books written by former staff members, there’s already a lot.

@@brianburgess1873 Seth is pretty good, I really enjoy his Closer Look segment. Fallon is eh, never could stand him tbh, only watch him for the interviews, but even those are sometimes hard to watch. Kimmel actually has alot of heart and makes me laugh alot, especially Guillermo. But Stephen is the best in the game currently, imo. He has an honest quality about him and humor that's really unexpected, especially when doing the Meanwhile bit. Some of those have made me laugh so hard I've started to cry. He really has great writers and the band is exceptional. It's a shame Jon Batiste had to leave this past summer, but I'm excited for what's to come from him. 😊

Wow. This reminded me of how often Stephen's monologues really helped me keep my sense of humor and outrage at what my country had been subjecting itself to. Hopefully enough of us learned a lesson from all this if they somehow couldn't see Trump and his minions for what they were in 2016.
