    I think it would help to mention the fact since this movie is russian, its actually based on the soviet bootleg of carlo collodi's pinocchio, called the golden key, sometimes referred to burarino. In the golden key, its basically a censored and whitewashed version of the original pinocchio where nothing bad happens in the story and buratino (pinocchio) never tells a lie and doesn't grow his nose to fit with soviet standards. It's really weird and most russians are familiar with the golden key instead of pinocchio. You can tell it's buratino just from the design, his iconic striped red hat and golden blonde hair, fitting the color scheme of the soviet union

    • @allece_tea

      Being a Russian myself I grew up with Buratino and only after found it was an "adaptation" for the Pinnochio, which is funny as we also have the same thing with Wizard of Oz as the Russian "bootleg" version is called Ellie in the Emerald city which compared to Buratino is literally the same so I have no idea why they even rebranded it 😂.
      But to be fair I would disagree a bit with the "censored" and "nothing bad happens" as the story itself was more about a rowdy kid trying to learn to be well mannered/responsible rather than saying the truth as in Pinnochio and there are some dark parts in the story. Especially the one which I bet hunted a lot of children where Buratino is tricked by the cat and the fox to bury money in an abandoned graveyard/field at night and then attacked, robbed, stripped by them to be hanged upside down by the tree the whole night until he is found.

    • @scatmanjohnfan22
      @scatmanjohnfan22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      @@allece_tea oh right! yeah i was exadderating a bit, it seems more like it was based on the original pinocchio story before collodi made the ending too, since buratino doesn't become a real boy. I can actually see some potential with this version of the story actually, like for example, accepting yourself for who you are instead of changing yourself to fit contemporary standards.
      But this movie goes in the total opposite direction, and that's such a waste to me. Fruity pinocchio makes himself turn into a human and give up dreams on seeing the world for some girl? Not a great lesson for kids. Pinocchio (or buratino in this case) shouldn't feel the need to change himself, and should be greatful for the miracle of life he already has :>

    Honestly the only modern version of a classic children's tale I genuinely appreciate was that Hansel and Gretel adaptation Netflix released last year, "Secret Magic Control Agency". That movie was hilarious and quite relatable, a surprisingly colorful and creative take of the original story. The best way I'd describe it is a mix between "Shrek 2" and "Zootopia"

      @@quentinrosver9667 Well it isn't perfect and, like I said, the plot is something that you have probably seen done before, but the execution is pretty good, the visuals quite outstanding for a lower-budget movie, and the comedy cartoonish for the most part, but there are a few adult jokes sprinkled here and there. There's also some interesting world building and I find most characters quite charming.
      But what stood out the most in my opinion was the sibling-bond between our two main characters, Hansel and Gretel. I think it was very refreshing to see a sibling-oriented adventure for once (especially a brother-sister one). And I think it was quite relatable for anyone who has siblings, both for adults and children (you'll see what I mean).
      The movie has its fair share of heart-felt moments too and not gonna lie, one of them actually made me tear up a bit.
      Anyway, I believe it is a worthy and fun experience.

    So. I just found out that Fruity Pinochio is a weird love child of English Pinochio and Russian Buratino.
    Buratino is a russian version of Pinochio, a story about a wooden kid made by Papa Carlo, Russian version of Jepetto, who obtained a weird log that scared the shit out of his drinking partner. He then made Buratino out of it. Buratino's plot is basically Pinochio's story, but with good ending and more characters and most important antagonists in the story are puppet master also known as Karabas Barabas and Fox and The Cat who work for the puppet master. So that's why cat and fox appear so often in the movie. Also Buratino does not have ability to make his nose longer. Buratino's plot does not revolve around him trying to be a real boy. Author kept Pinochio's part where he gets into trouble after going to the circus, but after that he gets into some shenanigans. Meets new friends, those being a blue haired girl named Malvina who was part of Karabas's puppet crew and her Poodle named Artemon. And finds out about a special golden key that can open a weird metalic secret door hidden behind a rag hanging on Carlo's wall. Buratino has a lot of unique elements and it became a russian classic.

    So, about why the fox and the cat were preserved but the rest of the plot wasn't... Basically this was a full-scale Russian animation project by local crew and funded by the government. AND Pinnochio was translated/adapted in Russian, known in this country as "Buratino". This adaptation has almost no ties to the original Pinnochio tale, so much that the protagonist doesn't even want to become human in the first place! The only plot threads that appear both in Pinnochio and Buratino are the puppet circus - and the fox and the cat scamming the protagonist. In fact, those two characters are prominent antagonists in the Russian version (and it's movie and cartoon adaptations from the 20th century) instead of simply appearing in a single scene - just like in this animation where they work with the puppetmaster.
    To sum up, the reason behind Pinnochio: A True Story being a weird adaptation can be attributed to it being an amalgamation between the original plot by Carlo Collodi, the Russian adaptation of Buratino, and whatever else the writers wanted to add so that it wouldn't be like the other films (like the talking horse).

    • @CoalEater_Elli
      @CoalEater_Elli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      As a Russian dude, i already noticed the similarities between Pinochio and Buratino's story. Especially with Pinochio's love interest having blue hair like Malvina, a character feom Buratino fairy tale, who was not featured in Pinochio. This would also be an obvious Buratino adaptation, if fox was female and blue haired girl had a poodle.

    This reminds me of The True History of Puss in Boots, a French film that came out around the same time as the DreamWorks film. The English dub was done in Canada but when Fox distributed it, they re-dubbed Richard Dumont's Puss, best known as Sardo from Are You Afraid Of The Dark, with William Shatner. No other actor was re-dubbed.

    About the Cat and the Fox in 9:55
    Perhaps the creators were inspired by a cartoon version of Pinocchio that was made in USSR back in 1959 by the name of "Приключения Буратино"
    There are lots of iconic scenes with these two characters in particular regarding the storyline where they tried to scam Buratino (aka soviet Pinocchio). They are remembered by adults and sometimes even used in everyday life lol (for example the line in a song where the Fox whose name I don't remember was trying to get Pinocchio distracted by saying "Какое небо голубое!" translated smth like "What a beautiful sky there is today, look!")
    We really can connect the dots here since Pinocchio the True Story is made in Russia yk so yeah that's why it's even in the movie lol

  • @Гева-б6ц
    @Гева-б6ц 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This movie is like a regulated version of the anime Ghost Stories, where instead of being given almost completely free reign on what they can do, the voice actors are just really trying to push the envelope on how deranged/hilarious they can sound without getting cut by the producers (not that they probably care that much for the movie anyway). It’s like a shitpost that cost money to make.

    So if you say that this film was sponsored by russian government it was probably based not only on original story of Pinocchio and Disney film but also on russian version of the story - "Golden key". Author of this adoptation tried to translate original book but he basically new nothing about Italian language so he ended up writing entirely new story with same concept. Main character here is named Buratino and although story starts the same Buratino's journey is quite different from Pinocchio's. For instance there's no whale, fairy or jail and Buratino stays as wooden doll at the end.
    So with all of that in mind I wanted to clear up some things:
    The reason why there isn't anything about Pinocchio nose is because in russian version Buratino lost this trait;
    Circus is very present in the story the same way it was in "Golden key". I think I should go even further and say that in this book owner of the circus(his name is Karabas-Barabas) is actually the main villain of the story;
    The "love interest" girl is probably a representation of Malvina - girl with blue hair that ran of from the circus with her dog. I don't really understand why she plays this role here 'cause Buratino never showed any interest in her but his friend Piero did. He loved her and dedicated songs to her, he also left circus to find Malvina;
    Fox and cat duo was really involved in the events of the book, they were also the right-hand people of Karabas-Barabas so it's not surprising that they play big role in the story.
    So there is a lot of inspiration from this version of "Pinocchio" but there's a lot of differences too such as there was no horse and the story wasn't that awful. If you interested you can search "Buratino and the golden key" here on TH-cam, there's many clips from films and cartoons some of them have english subtitles. I recommend watching clip with Piero song, it's from the most famous adoptation and actors(who are children btw) play their roles pretty well
