"I have witnessed your actions in this cycle: the destruction of Sovereign, the fall of the Collectors. The Reapers perceive you as a threat. You are an anomaly, yet that is not enough."
God, how to describe this scene.... landing with the mech underwater, the suspense of what you might find...the calm and beauty of the life under the sea....the chasm below and then shooting the missile over that depth and the burst of bubbles from below, the sheer size of the cavern and you feel so small and insignificant...thinking you have no idea what is below...and then it rises...captures you in its mind.....you are powerless as it ascends....Leviathan....the beings who created it all...... and you forget to breath..........
Bull shit. The Reapers, who have killed everything for countless of cycles for millions or billions of years. percieve Shepard as a threat. that is very signifigant. By game's end. Shepard had played a signifigant hand in the killing of up to 5 reapers. Given how many the reapers themselves are able to kill, that's like a kill ratio of millions to 1. Sovereign, the Collector base, and the destroyers on Tuchanka, Rannoch and Earth. And that was all because of Shepard and their team. not insignifigant at all The "cycle" we take part in, was very different from the rest. and ultimately, it ended them once and for all.
Idk mates, when you first stared at sovereign, and it stared back, and talked down, not to, but down towards you, still gives me shivers, I still find myself thinking I must prove to the ancient machine that I am a threat It’s the vanguard of my destruction? I am the vanguard of the galaxy, i must show it cannot stand against me, any of us
No, it only made me angry. Angrier, rather. At them for being such stuck up fuck-ups, at the reapers for being slaves to their faulty logic. The Leviathans lost control of their solution, they failed. The reapers lost control of the harvest against Shepard, they failed. *They* are insignificant, a mere human could erase their whole work. More than a billion years of genocide, undone by Commander Fucking Shepard. *He* is the apex.
@@ezservice6764 you ARE insignificant though. Even if Shepard killed fifty more Reapers than he did, it wouldn't mean much. You forget that what makes the Reapers dangerous is that, unlike organics, they are ETERNAL. If Liara had not discovered the Crucible plans, that's it. Game over. Everyone would be dead. They'd put up a good fight, but that's ALL they'd do. An eternal foe that outlasts you and uses your own people against you isn't something you beat no matter HOW badass and accomplished you are......i.e. "insignificant", which is EXACTLY what Shepard would have been had it not been for the Crucible project.
1:21 Love these few notes, a longing for what once was, an ancient mystery withering in the deep. Hiding from their failure, their past glory. Once masters, now mere observers, alone, silent, and forgotten.
Doing the Music Direction, implementation, and fill-in music (very little) for this DLC was one of my favorite game projects ever. Chris and Sasha nailed the vibe, and were awesome to work with.
Before the cycles, our kind was the apex of life in the galaxy. The lesser species were in our thrall, serving our needs. We grew more powerful, and they were cared for. But we could not protect them from themselves. Over time, the species built machines that then destroyed them. Tribute does not flow from a dead race. To solve this problem, we created an intelligence with the mandate to preserve life at any cost. As the intelligence evolved, it studied the development of civilizations. Its understanding grew until it found a solution. In that instant, it betrayed us. It chose our kind as the first harvest. From our essence, the first Reaper was created. You call it Harbinger.
_"We will fight. But not for you, or any lesser race. We were the first- the apex race- we will survive. And the Reapers who trespass on this world will understand our power. They will become our slaves. Today... they pay their tribute in blood."_
"There is no war, there is only the harvest." Jesus, so cold and mysterious. When I played this part in the game, I almost forget to breathe. Thanks dtaylorutube for your awesome uploads! :3
Such a good DLC, really nailed that cosmic horror vibe! The only let down is that it was constrained to fit into the already established canon around the Reaper’s intentions. Imagine if ME3 had gone the Dark Energy route: how different and more satisfying the final interaction with Leviathan would have been! They created an AI to find a solution to their ‘galactic warming’ issue, and it decided that organics might be able to figure it out if they band together in a hive-mind-like robotic existence, and so the cycle began.
Reapers deciding that the solution to galactic warming is that they have to continually destroy advanced organics force them to work together in the hope that that alone will allow them to figure out a solution... sounds fucking horrible lol. The original ending wasn't the best but the alternative dark energy route wouldn't have been much better in the same circumstances. People act like the dark energy route was set up more than the AI vs. Organics thing because Tali mentions it twice in ME2. Even Karpyshyn said that the dark energy route was never set in stone, it was one of many endings they had conceived of during 2. The problem with ME3 is that the entire game was written more or less in the same vein as the first two, with a committee of writers, but the ending was written by a much smaller group of people and therefore less scrutinized, less in touch with the emotional core of the story up until that point, far too intellectual to connect with the audience. On top of that, the project leads were very misguided in their attempts to bring in new players, with the multiplayer focus, simplification of the dialogue system, and the constant reexplanation of concepts and characters people should be familiar with by now.
I would like to play mass effect: first harvest. It would pretty cool to see first harvest, communicate with leviathans, maybe we even could play for one of the leviathans, or maybe even for catalyst, damn that would really awesome
+ShinigamiOfDooM Well considering the Reapers themselves give off huge Lovecraftian vibes, the Leviathans just sealed the deal really. I think you're among many who picked it up.
Everyone is always wondering about the beginning but nobody ever questions: What if there was something before, before the beginning of all things? "We were the first, the apex race. We will survive."
I think the timeline would be after the reaper war. This would make sense and it will give the developers plenty of room to create quests and explore the aftermath and possibly witness the rebuilding of the galaxy. Though many people have suggested that it would take place hundred of years after the war to include the story from Mass Effect Andromeda. But if they choose the timeline after the war, then it would mean many past companions are still there. There's also a chance for Shepard to come back even if his body is perished. His mind could be transferred to the reaper or some other machine. With some space magic, it isn't inconceivable to create a new organic body and have Shepard transfer his mind into his new container. Bioware could also risk it and not include Shepard and many of his past companions though and just go along with a few long lived companions like Liara and maybe Wrex/Grunt. The other companions would probably be long dead since it's been a few hundred years.
The reapers deserved to pay tribute in blood a long damn time ago. I hope every single reaper suffers a painful death for taking all those lives for nothing!
The part of 1:30 - 2:40 is just unbelievable... it is the underwater segment. Is it possible to create an extended version of this particular part? I would be grateful!
I love the " Leviathan speech song ". I am also curious to know if this can be considered a genre. If it is what it is? Thanks for the upload, been listening to this for like na hour xD.
It would be nice to have a marker to know where this plays in-game, a peice of it reminded me of the actual discussion Shep has with Leviathan, but other sections are unfamiliar just going off memory. Is it all meant to play and segue into one piece? I just cant think of where it begins and ends in-game.
This is about 4 or 5 different tracks merged into one. I'm extracting audio to use for something and I could not find this track, only the parts of it in Lev004 (Leviathan Act 4).
chiffmonkey Perhaps the trying to locate the beacon idea would have been appropriate. As it stands, there are hundreds of ways in which this game could've been made much better, such as adding more detail to cutscenes, developing Harbinger as a more omnipresent and intimidating villain (they had already started it in ME2), and, what else? Oh yeah, NOT MAKING IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE PLOT LIKE THIS ONE INTO DLC!
So what happened to the other Leviathan track on TH-cam? The one that plays the music from during the actual conversation with Leviathan? The video I used to use was called Leviathan unleashed. I can't seem to find that music anywhere on TH-cam now.
Ah ok, thanks. The video I used to have favorited played the part that starts at 1:22 on a longer loop or something. I wonder if it was recorded directly from the live game without picking a dialogue option or something. That might have made it play longer. I was just asking because that is my favorite part and it was longer in the other video.

The Reapers perceive you as a threat. And I want to know... why?
God, how to describe this scene....
landing with the mech underwater, the suspense of what you might find...the calm and beauty of the life under the sea....the chasm below and then shooting the missile over that depth and the burst of bubbles from below, the sheer size of the cavern and you feel so small and insignificant...thinking you have no idea what is below...and then it rises...captures you in its mind.....you are powerless as it ascends....Leviathan....the beings who created it all......

Don't you worry; Leviathan has full control over your autonomic nervous system. The gargantuan cuttlefish will handle your breathing from now on.
why geh writing style cringe much.

One of the best DLCs ever.

Fantastic story, fantastic characters, fantastic music. This isn't a story, this is an adventure!

Fitting music to such a beautiful scene. I had goosebumps all over!
When I tell you this scene literally made my jaw DROP, such an intensely powerful moment and yet so beautiful!

I love this track so much! Thanks for posting these.
The moment at 2:50... really kicks some ass...

There should be some kind of gameplay in the underwater segment. As it stands it's just a playable cutscene.
chiffmonkey IKR, we should've had to fight alien sharks or something
chiffmonkey That would have broken the tension. The whole point is that you are entirely alone.
