  • This knife had interested me since i saw it announced in 2023. I finally found Medford Knives & Tools Antik one in the trim that I like and at a slight discount. At $620 retail even a 10% off buys you a nice lunch or a pint of your favorite single malt. While smaller than other Medfords, it is a large, EDC-friendly heavy hitter. There are no complaints from the design prospective. Love the S45VN blade at 64 HRC. Its very well sharpened and the lock engagement is perfect! What else do I want from it? More professionalism.
    Here’s what happened last year:

    Myself, I absolutely luv Ceramic Bearing Folders. I always remove the stock bearings and replace them with my personal, all-time favorites, Skiff Ceramic Bearings, with Phosphorus Bronze, Milled Cages. Bearing Folders, when done right are awesome.

    Sir did you mention about Medford that they heat treat their S45VN pretty well?

    • @CuttingBoardRx
      @CuttingBoardRx  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Medford S45VN blades are middle of the road. They are heat treating in the house, non-atmospheric oven, small batch, blades individually wrapped in inconel (inert metal) foil with charcoal powder (removes oxygen from surface). That’s what is shown in their video. Looks like they air quench without cryogenic treatment, so the hardness should be 61-62 HRC and toughness about 5 ft•lbs, which is on par with non-powder D2. For that kind of money, McNees makes better blades bc they have literally one of the best heat treat shops in the world do their heat treatment. You should check them out. Sorry about the long answer, but this is what I call fun!

    The M48 is also a bearing knife. The snail trails on the scales are common in my experience with MKT. My 187 came the same. They don't particularly bother me, tbh, but they do call the handling of parts in production into question. My asking MKT about that elicited a late-night call from Greg (22h00 my time) and we talked for twenty minutes or so, perfectly amicably. We were even amicable when the subject turned to politics which confirmed - for me - an intuition I had about Greg, namely that the public persona is a bit of a front for a smart and well-read guy. Re: the snail trails. Greg said it's a function of the stonewash they apply, which could be the case. Or it could be casual handling on the production line. As I said, I don't really care. (I know I should, by the laws of internet minutiae and online discourse, and I might care more on a different knife, but the good qualities of the 187 overwhelm the niggles. I also got it at a much better price than recommended retail, so I didn't feel particularly burned.)

    Production, Mid Tech, Custom. The only three categories of knife production for me. Three examples in order for me would be Spyderco (production) Custom Knife Factory (midtech) and someone like Jeremy Horton (custom maker). CNC pattern made knives but limited in production would strike me as Midtech. Nothing wrong with it - but it is what it is.

    You know if Medford would price down a little bit just a little i think they would sell so much more because their knives are unique enough so awesome. It’s just they are so expansive and probably worth it but out of reach for many people. I think it’s good to be critical but we should not demonize hard working companies on TH-cam by picking all their little flaws. I love and own many Spyderco knives and people praise Spyderco, but many times my I had flaws on the knives to be honest. Let’s have positive critique and move on with hour lives.
