    Fantastic cauliflower harvest. The rest of the crop was amazing too. I think it proves that the winter veg need more water than we give them . Well done Chris

      Thank you! It’s been a really wet year here as well, and I do think you’re right-winter veg like cauliflowers seem to thrive with a bit more water than we usually give them. It’s been a learning curve, but the results this year have been worth it. How did your winter veg do with all the rain? Would love to know if you noticed a difference in your crops too!

      It was quite a surprise as all previous years had been a flop re. cauliflowers. We’ll have to see if I can do it again in 2025 🤞🏻

    Well Chris you have certainly still got loads in the go when most people including me are putting things to bed. It’s gone very cold here now so most things except brassicas and spinach have died off. Have a superb week ahead, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦

    • @veggieplot

      Thanks, Ali! I’ve been lucky with the harvest still going strong, but with the colder weather, things are definitely starting to wind down here too. The brassicas are hanging in there, though, and spinach is always a good one for this time of year. Hope you have a great week ahead as well-what’s still going in your garden?

    We had a frost in the first week of September on East Coast of Ireland. It killed my courgette plants. They were my second planting. The first planting were demolished by cattle that broke into my field. What a season😮

    • @veggieplot

      What a tough season you’ve had! It must have been so frustrating to lose so many courgette plants, first to cattle and then to an early frost. September frost is always a bit of a surprise. Are you planning to try again next year, or maybe switch things up? It would be great to hear what you’re thinking for the next season!

    • @sheelaghomalley5459

      I'll definitely be trying again next year. Us gardeners are resilient. Every growing season we learn something. Plus I have a really large tunnel now to grow in.

    Those Cauliflowers look amazing and so little slug damage.

    • @veggieplot

      I was totally amazed too but I expect I just caught them in time. Having said that, the fine netting helped keep most of the larger slugs and snails out, so I'll definitely do that again next year.

    I would definitely go on and on about the cauliflower if I had grown those! I never can get them to the finish line.
    Love the golden beets. Have a last succession of beets and hoping they will come before the frosts.
    My last Lucid Gems on the vine are almost entirely purple. Because I exposed more to the sun to get them to finish up.

    • @veggieplot

      Thank you so much! I have to admit, I’m pretty chuffed with how the cauliflowers turned out-it’s not often they do this well for me either. Golden beets are such a beautiful crop, aren’t they? Fingers crossed your last succession makes it before the frosts hit. As for your Lucid Gems, it sounds like you’re giving them the perfect last push by exposing them to the sun. How have you found the flavour this year? I’ve heard mixed reviews depending on the season.

  • @ibrstellar1080

    That's a fantastic harvest and most of my crops either failed or went to seed and only the beans did well this year.

    • @veggieplot

      Thank you! It’s been a good year for the harvest, but I know how frustrating it can be when crops don’t perform as expected. At least your beans did well-that’s something! Hopefully next season will bring better luck with the rest of your crops. What are you planning to focus on for next year?

  • @spudsandroses

    Superb harvest, Chris. I've also not had any success with the "all year round" variety. The F1 is the winner....pity it's an F1, but gosh, the quality of harvest is amazing 👏 👌😀

    • @veggieplot

      I am so impressed with them and definitely going the F1 route in future. They take so long and take up so much space that they have to be worth all the effort.

    • @veggieplot

      Thanks so much, Elaine-I was really pleased with the cauliflowers this year! Yes, I’m considering giving up the plot at home due to time constraints, but I’ll definitely be keeping the main church allotment going. It’s always a balancing act with time, isn’t it?

    • @allotmentjoy

      @veggieplot Yes, absolutely. You have to be realistic about how much you can achieve in the time you have. I'm sure you will feel the benefit of less to cultivate. It's not all nose to the grindstone laugh. 🍁🐿🍂

    Excellent harvest in 16yr of growing great cauliflowers this year has been the worst did 2 different varieties to what i've grown for the last few years thought I'd have a change lesson learned stick to what grows best for you , strange thing was top half of the bed wasn't to bad different variety on the end of the bed rubbish 👍

    • @veggieplot

      Hi Elizabeth, this was by far the best year I have ever had and I'm chalking it down to the wet weather and F1 seeds. A lesson learned for me which I'll try again next year. It's odd how we can get different results in the same bed, I've had it before with french and runner beans.

    How does the netting make a positive difference to beans? I suffered from snails this year with the beans!

    • @veggieplot

      Using fine netting can help keep large snails out if it’s secured tightly around the raised beds, as it acts as a physical barrier. It won’t stop the smaller ones, but it can make a difference in reducing the damage from bigger snails. Have you tried any other methods to keep snails away from your beans? I’d love to hear what worked or didn’t for you!

      We will mix them with bell pepper, carrot, bit of celery in the jar and preserve it for the winter.
      Really nice salad
