This guy is a legend. And he really took care of his vocal instrument. He sounds amazing still!!! These young artist need to study the greats like Simply Red.
Ohhhhhhhhh the memories flooding through my brain by each note and each word. My teens My 20s My 30s My 40s And now my 50s This song had been in my top 10 throughout all these years. Thank you!
Was younger when I heard this beautiful song. I was a gawky red head with freckles & seeing him made me feel seen. Such a beautiful voice with incredible back up singers to elevate his voice. 🥰
Back in the early 2000s I was teaching English in Japan, and there was this elderly gentleman of 80+ yrs old, Mr. Suzuki as one of my students. I kind of casually asked him why he wanted to learn English at his age and he said it's because his son Kenji lived in London and was the guitarist for the band, Simply Red. Unfortunately I didn't see him play in this video😂
The only good thing about being old is… I remember when this was originally played on the radio. Simply Red, your voice is still awesome. May you have lots of good health. 💖💟💖
I didn't spend much time with my father when I was young. He had his demons. But I remember I asked him once "Dad, which is your favorite band?" and he said "Simply Red". Despite everything I loved him and I miss him since he passed away 20 years ago. So Simply Red and this song reminds me of him every time. I hope I can see them some day live!
Simply amazing. Mick sounds like he did back in the day, what a voice, what a band and backing singers and the music and his voice is full of soul and just wonderful. 👏👏❤️👍🥰 xxxx
One of my very favorite songs and artists. Driven many miles singing his songs back in the 80's and forward and always sing along still to this day. Simply Red is as good today as then.
One of my best memories was simply red singing this song in Arena Pula , i really hope i can see them perform again , unbelivible band and incredible voice from Mick
Beautiful voice!! Thank you Jimmy for having Mick on your show❤. The last time I saw him on American TV was 2004 on One Life To Live & on Late Night with Conan in 1995. Seeing him tonight took my breath away bec i couldn't believe he's here❤
Can’t wait to see you in October ❤ fell in love with simply Red from the very first time I heard “holding back the years”holidaying on the east coast in my teenage years and 40 years on still loving them ❤
Wow !!! Sir Mick Hucknall... you are fantastic !! Same beautiful voice ! A legend !! SIMPLY RED is always my favorite group !!❤☆☆☆☆☆ 🥰 😍😘 Lovely Mick !!
Mick Hucknell was a powerhouse back in the day. Listening to him now, he's still great for his age, compared to some artists who were around on the British scene at the same time. Mick is just, SIMPLY AMAZING!! He nailed this big time!👌🎶🎙🎵💯❤️
Come to the states, PLEASE!!! East coast, PLEASE!! Have loved you for the past 3o years!!❤ Loved this perfect performance!❤ Suoerb background vocalists!❤ The Roots!❤
His rendition is nice, but I wish he sang his own song, 'Holding back the years'! 'Cause that song is just sublime! A real pick me up when I hear that song even when I get a little teary-eyed from it. 😊 ❤
Originally done by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1972 and going to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B charts, this cover version I think is better than the original, and the numbers can back me up. Simply Red took it all the way to the top in 1989 even earning a gold record. Written by Philly soul icons Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. It was also chosen as one of the "Songs of the (20th) Century" by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Wooooow! I was 15 when Simply Red came on MTV with Holding Back The Years…it was right before I had to leave for school she would watch MTV with me, my mom said “ that kid is going to go far with that voice, he doesn’t need music “ and by 1987 I was the BIGGEST SR fan . Mick still has it! Even his jewel in his tooth and his warm smile. I am so proud to watch this, Mick had a rough sad childhood and was poor and he has triumphed. We miss Fritz McIntyre who passed away a little while ago. Watch any Montreaux Jazz festival performances by them and it is mind blowing! 🥰🙌👏❤️👑
One of the best remakes ever. Although Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes originally did the song (shout out to the GOAT, Teddy Pendergrass), Simply Red’s remake is a classic all on its own.
I’ve seen Simply Red at least 5 times. He’s still sounding as good as he always has. Saw him at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on his American Soul tour. Great singer. Support band on that show was Ren Harvieu who I thought was fabulous.
such an amazing artist, still sounding flawless after 40 yrs
Mick's soulful voice and the band's exceptional musicianship have kept their music timeless and captivating. 🎶
Yes, flawless ❤

One of the greatest voices ever.
Omg absolutely. Gifted
Hell yess
I coundn't agree more!
The most incredible thing is that he has preserved intact that beautiful voice when others singers have already lost it !
@@James_Salvatore indeed... I've seen some interviews about Mick and he's said that he tries to speak the least, so he can take care of his voice
This guy is a legend. And he really took care of his vocal instrument. He sounds amazing still!!! These young artist need to study the greats like Simply Red.
He still sounds Amazing!
This came out the year I started middle school and has remained a favorite for four decades now. Thank you, Jimmy.

Extremely rare appearance in the US. Great performance!!
Yes rare. Avoiding the US. Smart man.
I would love him to come to the states for a concert
Mick will always be a great soul singer
One of the best male vocalists ever

NORTH AMERICA need Simply Red Tour 🎉40 years !!

Unbelievable voice still. Mick is one of the very few who can still sing live, although his voice has more base to it, it’s better than ever
He sounds amazing
The only good thing about being old is… I remember when this was originally played on the radio. Simply Red, your voice is still awesome. May you have lots of good health. 💖💟💖
His name is Mick Hucknell, Simply Red is the name of his band.
@ It’s funny you should tell me that because I googled it last night and you are correct. Thank you bye.

Totally was thinking Jimmy should’ve said “cover” ! This is the BEST cover of this song though! I had the cassingle. Yup I said cassingle!

Such a classic. Brings back memories of my 80s days in high school. Added this to my favorite 80s music playlist.
This song was always a comfort for me when it came out when I was a sophomore in high school.

🎼Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes 🎶
Mick en vivo siempre canta perfecto. Una leyenda 🫢🤩
Used to love this song growing up. He sounds the same as he did years ago!
I love that I am from the same town as this man!
It’s a sophisticated and deep love song. I want to buy the vinyl album in Korea. ❤

Thank you for this! Perfect comment! ❤
It is definitely not better than the original. The original has more "soul" and more feeling to it. This is very bland.
Simply LOVELY… Dut dut du dut
Charlie Drake would have been so proud to see his son singing on the Tonight Show.
