    Great review! Shrek 2 is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I feel like the animation has aged really well. Is the Far Far Away Idol short only on the standard Blu-Ray?

    I'm looking forward to picking this up. Honestly the first two are the only ones worth watching in the series, so I wouldn't hold out for a complete set or anything like that. Plus, between this and the first release, it's got tons of bonus features like Shrek the Halls which my family watches every year.

    I am totally excited to get my 4K Blu-Ray. Love the Shrek movies. I even got the 4Ks of Puss In Boots and the original Shrek, the Ultimate Collection on Blu-Ray and even the original DVDs of Shrek 1 - The Third (Mostly to have those bonuses). Hope they do Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After next and maybe expand to more like the Madagascar series, both Spirit movies, Kung Fu Panda trilogy (Likely may happen because a fourth one is coming), etc. I don't know about you, but I really want to see Shark Tale, Home, Bee Movie, Over the Hedge and Rise of the Guardians in HDR. Bet they will pop because of the colorful colors. Especially Shark Tale because I think that movie is over hated and underrated.

      I hope they release Mr. Peabody and Sherman in 4K, the dark scenes with the bright highlights will really pop with hdr and an increased resolution

    I got so confused by the aspect ratio printed on the back cover of Shrek 2 4K. Dreamworks movies never looked like 2.35:1 back then. Thank you for clearing that up.

    Quite the comparison and review.
    Now Shrek 2 might as well be better than the original for its more emotional moments, the antagonist in the Fairy Godmother, less crude nature, and the debut of Puss in Boots.
    Also, if you forgot to mention, the Blu-ray included is the same Blu-ray released on December 7, 2010 in the Whole Story boxset by Paramount Home Entertainment under DreamWorks Animation Home Entertainment; reason why the Shrek 2 Blu-ray was in 1.78:1, as Paramount Home Entertainment has released a variety of its movies that were in 1.85:1 in that format on Blu-ray.
    Also Paramount Home Entertainment has used Dolby TrueHD for as long as who knows.

    "The human eye cannot see 8K anyway."
    I will never understand why people cannot visualize that remote viewing movies with friends and family, is the future, which requires V.R. headsets.
    This means that 8K film scans WILL be useful in the future.
    ...16-bit color scans will be useful too, but we have yet to see display technology that is able to display 4:4:4 16-bit color; the most is Dolby Vision (12-bit).
    ...70 mm film (and 35 mm pre-sound film) is able to capture 8K+ pixel detail.

      4K (and 2K) millennium theatrical standards had only just been implemented before the first Shrek. And the second Shrek was largely run off the same technology that Shrek 1 was. And, for reasons that are beyond my truncated explanational capacity, a lot of the "pre-final" source materiel for both Shrek 1 and 2 were lost and only the final 2K renders of the images were retained. The reason, aside from the obvious computational and digital storage capabilities of Dreamworks at the time, that Shrek was only rendered in 2K was because, as mentioned, 2K and 4K standards had only just been implemented and most theaters were opting for 2K projectors over 4K ones as 4K projectors were more expensive and transferring 4K movies across entire countries to be shown in theaters was quite a bit more expensive back then both in printing the physical media and in shipping it as internet infrastructure back then was not as robust as it is now.
      As well as this, rendering 2K CGI movies back 20+ years ago took a significant amount of time and 4K movies took even longer to render. Shrek 1 took 5 million CPU render hours at 2K and Shrek 2 took 10 million at 2K also. Ironically enough, this doubling of render hours from Shrek 1 to 2 is called "Shrek's Law." Even modern movies still take a significant amount of time to render because of "Shrek's Law," which is sort of a play on the idea of Moore's Law. That's a slightly seprate topic though so anyways-
      There are some reports in the industry (not specifically dreamworks) of some frames taking upwards of 30 hours to render. That's (potentially) 30 hours to create something that will be on screen for a 24th of a second assuming the movie, like most are, is playing at 24 frames per second. Alternatively, using a slightly inaccurate metaphor, if you only had one early 2000's CPU working on rendering the entire Shrek film, it would have taken 571 years to render the film at 2K, which is longer than the half-life of DNA. Rendering it at 4k would have taken more than a thousand years. The way we get around this is by having render farms (Not all that different from data centers in MMO's) but even with rendering farms, bumping the movie up to 4K would have massively added to the workload. All of this compounded into the decision to render Shrek at 2K to match up with most 2K capable theater projectors at the time.
      By this virtue, yes, both Shrek 1 and 2 are 2K upscaled to 4K as there exists no mastering materiel in 4K. To get a fully native 4K version of shrek, you would essentially need to remake and rerender every frame from the ground up. You'd essentially be making an entirely new movie. Regardless of whether "Native 4K should be standard in 2022," the earlier Shrek movies' mastering materiel simply does not exist in 4K.
      As a comparison, I just recently saw that Annihilation (2018) was recorded in 6K in some shots. This means that, with 8K TV's now being a thing, though still not commonplace, if they were to ever remaster Annihilation to 8K, the highest it's native resolution would be is 6K. Anything beyond that would simply have to be upscaled either by your player, your TV, an AI, or a remastering process.
      Short of completely remaking Shrek or a very powerful and streamlined AI entity working to add detail and refinements, this is the best you're going to get. This is the best Shrek 1/2 are ever going to be using only their mastering materiels. Keep in mind, even at 2K, this is still more detail than is available in the 1080 blu-ray.

    The fact that it's a lazy upscale vs. a rerender of the film made me asked for a refund. If only Dreamworks and Universal store the files for Shrek 1 in a better spot and actually take the time to pull out the movie files for Shrek 2 and Puss In Boots from the archives and rerender everything (Which would take less time than the rendering for when these films came out) then it would've been better. Save your money and buy the Shrek Ultimate Collection. Yes, the HDR looks nice, yes it's in the intended aspect ratio and yes DTS X sound nice, but I am putting my money where my mouth is. I only buy the 4Ks if it's Native 4K and has quality audio and HDR like a perfect 4K should.

    • @MINONIVEK1
      @MINONIVEK1 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      These films do not exist in higher resolution. In order to make them natively higher than a 2k di they would have to completely remake the movie.

    • @chrisfarleyshrek4347
      @chrisfarleyshrek4347 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MINONIVEK1 Then why did the guy who made this video took 2.2 points out of the review? He made a fair point about limitations. That is no excuse for lazy upscaling instead of a rerender. The movie will only look as good as playing a PS4 port of a PS3 game. Though that doesn't say the normal Blu-Ray has a flaw (Outside of plain colored discs instead of proper artwork). Sadly, both the Blu-Ray and 4K versions have menus worse than the DVD version's Brady Bunch parody menu. In fact, Universal and Dreamworks should've put in the "Pick Me!" menu for Shrek 1 and the Brady Bunch parody menu for Shrek 2 in HD and 4K. Those are way better menus than photoshop video montages for the Blu-Ray or the static screen with music in the 4K.

      @@chrisfarleyshrek4347 I don't think you understand how any of this works...

    • @MINONIVEK1
      @MINONIVEK1 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@chrisfarleyshrek4347 CGI at this time and even most now is only rendered in 2k. There is no additional data available to make a native 4k di it does not exist. In order to make say shrek or any other animated movie 4k it has to be either upscaled or completely remade from scratch. Upscaling is a viable option when the wanted result is an improved version of the older movie and not an abomination such as the live action lion king haha. One of the reasons native 4k movies with cgi can have cgi that stands out much more than their 1080p counterpart is this. The cgi can only be 2k because thats just how it was made. Many live action movies with cgi are upscaled as well to prevent the jarring effect 2k cgi has in native 2160p content. The points were deducted because of it only being able to be an upscale which prevents it from being as high a quality and detailed as a film shot on say 35mm film. As he says universal did nothing wrong it is just the nature of older computer animation. As for the menus animate menus take up a surprising amount of disc space. DVD heavily compressed the movie files in order to allow for the animated menus. For the uhd format less compression for video and lossless audio are valued more than animated menus which is why most are boring.

      This Shrek 2 4K UHD is still a good release & I recommended it in this video, it’s just very similar to the Polar Express 4K UHD limitations on the CGI animation of the time period, but still both films look the best on these 4K UHD that I think they ever will!
      Thanks for all your great comments!👍
