djokawari There is a program or at least people who do trap neuter and release. The cats who have been fixed have their ears clipped. Its not perfect but people do try.

Apparently there is an organization that takes care of feeding the cats, and since they regulate their food they ask that visitors NOT feed the cats since it can lead to either overfeeding, or the cats can be fed things that aren't good for them. There's supposed to be a sign, although none of us saw it anywhere so I'm not sure if it's even there anymore. Update: There only seems to be nine people left on the island now and they are all elderly. It was decided to neuter all 200 cats on the island to stop their population growth.

The local economy is almost completely dependant on tourists coming there to see the cats, too. So, if you love cats, and you care if elderly Japanese people can make at least a minimum income, that's a perfect combination. 🤜💢🤛
That's the case for a lot of these small depopulated islands. There's a cluster of them in the Inland Sea that have become a sort of living laboratory for contemporary art and architecture as a tourist draw as well. Japan's tourism numbers have been skyrocketing in recent years but so much of it is locked into the Tokyo-Kyoto bullet train corridor and doesn't get distributed into areas where it's really needed. I always try to make a point of branching out to less visited spots whenever I visit.
I agree with you. Unless someone or a group of people volunteers to feed these cats, a lot of them or worst all of them, will end up dying of hunger. I would say the best solution, is to transport the somewhat healthy or healthy ones for adoption and euthanize the really sicks ones with low chance of survival. I would help if I could, but I don't live in Japan nor have money to help these cats.
no we don't. they need to slowly die off, overwise they will overpopulate and only make it worse. That or neuteuring, which people aren't interested in since they're tourists and all they wanna do is play with the cats and FEED them.

I wonder why no one took advantage of it yet, like you could make money from this island, build hotels, build more cat shops, sell souvenirs, you would make enough money to take care of the cats and keep some to yourself.
+Dashka 155 It's pretty out in the middle of nowhere, so I don't think it can get that much tourism. Not too many people visit that part of Japan. I imagine that's why it's not very built up.
This makes me want to hurry up and finish my veterinary study so I can come over and just live with all of the cats and look after them. It has genuinely got me thinking about the potential for it if I am to invest time and money into looking after these gorgeous kitties and the island. I think I've finally found my goal in life. Not a bad goal at all :) My first career goal for the longest had been to become a vet but...I had to come to terms with the fact that I don't have the aptitude for being any kind of doctor :/ Still, if more awareness about this island could be raised, it'd be great to help get the cats spayed, neutered and medical attention. Doing the first two though would end the tourism of that island but...mild human entertainment or the health and well-being of the cats...I don't think you can have both here without constantly having to come back and fix the cats, which becomes extremely costly.
If I had the money I would totally pay for a vet office on the island where a vet could come over a few times a week or something. And also make like a decent sized hotel for people wanting to stay over
That would probably be the best way to deal with this, fix as many of the cats as possible and when the village finally ceases to be there will only be a few cats left that will be easier to adopt out.

I really like that you mentioned the more 'real' side of cat island. I've seen a lot of videos about cat island but they never touched upon that side of it. I went there 2 years ago and loved it, although I went during winter when it was really cold, so I was only 1 of 2 visors they had that day. When I got to the tourist center there was a group of about 10 very friendly cats who were clearly starving for some human attention as they flocked around me to greet me as I arrived and loved that I spent a few hours with them patting and playing with them. It was the sole reason I made the trip upto Sendai for the one day there, but it was worth it.
I think we should learn from the Chinese on this one: *you give a poor cat a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime*
If I was a millionaire, I'd buy land on this island, open up a cat themed restaurant that either used local ingredients or payed the local stores to import ingredients (so customers who liked the food could buy the raw ingredients from the locals too) and use a portion of the profits to open a cat charity on the island that included a veteran. Sadly, I'm not someone with that kind of money :(

A 2kg bag of dry cat food is somewhere in the area of 1200 to 1500 yen, which is roughly 15 to 19$ Canadian. The 1200 yen variety would be the cheap stuff. Meanwhile on Amazon right now I (in Canada) just searched cat food, first result on the list is a 9.1kg bag of Whiskas with real chicken, 25$. You'd be better off buying it here and trying to ship it to them.
My husband and I went to Dominican Republic for our honeymoon and it was 100% ruined by the underfed and ill kittens, cats, and dogs. We spent the ENTIRE trip trying to feed and pet everyone. We made it our mission to help them as much as possible :(
Thats DEFINITELY different than what is happening on this island. There is population management, regular feeding and basic care for them here. The Dominican republic and many other places around the world have stray populations that can emotionally gut a Westerner. Many people see dogs and cats as a nuisance and local governments do nothing to keep numbers down which is very irresponsible in terms of public health and safety since they have the potential for rabies, worms and sickness. It is horribly sad but again, if the money isn't there animals will suffer. They are domesticated and it is our duty to protect them but many cultures do not see it that way or don't have the resources. Japanese people see cats as a sign of good luck and do a lot for these Cat Island cats.

The good thing is that cats are able to easily drink salt water! They naturally filter out the salt, so they have plenty of water being surrounded by the sea ;)

babybluehashyo Uh, I was hoping rachel and jun would. I know they'd give it to the right people. It would make their channel more popular if they started saving animals like that. As in, giving an island full of cats proper medical attention, water and food. This will bring more visitors to the island and promote tourism, more jobs being created and maybe a higher population count as well. All while doing a hell of a good thing. It's a win win situation that I think should start with funding from her users.

If they made a video and said the money donated, or a portion of, would be given to get the cats care...a lot of people would donate. They have a large platform they could use for a cause they care about. How would this work? •• Every now and again, I go to Paxi because I have family over there. And cats are normally shot, or put into bags and beaten into rocks until they're killed. One day we found a kitten that was missing an eye and was very poorly, so we looked after it but couldn't bring it back because he needed to be tested before it could be brought to England. Luckily the family that we had looked after the little guy but it isn't easy to take them. 3: Xx
if you want to take a cat from there i suggest you stalk it thoroughly first so you know if it has any family or bestfriends then you decide whether to take them all or leave them all
That's something to do a kickstarter/GoFundMe for, have a Japanese vet come over with some help for a month or so and try to round up, fix, heal, tag and name as many cats as possible (keeping enough of the younger ones un-fixed to keep the population going), potentially even putting some of the kittens up for adoption. Worthy cause.

+Dashka 155 It's pretty out in the middle of nowhere, so I don't think it can get that much tourism. Not too many people visit that part of Japan. I imagine that's why it's not very built up.

This makes me want to hurry up and finish my veterinary study so I can come over and just live with all of the cats and look after them. It has genuinely got me thinking about the potential for it if I am to invest time and money into looking after these gorgeous kitties and the island.

Not a bad goal at all :) My first career goal for the longest had been to become a vet but...I had to come to terms with the fact that I don't have the aptitude for being any kind of doctor :/ Still, if more awareness about this island could be raised, it'd be great to help get the cats spayed, neutered and medical attention. Doing the first two though would end the tourism of that island but...mild human entertainment or the health and well-being of the cats...I don't think you can have both here without constantly having to come back and fix the cats, which becomes extremely costly.

That would probably be the best way to deal with this, fix as many of the cats as possible and when the village finally ceases to be there will only be a few cats left that will be easier to adopt out.

I really like that you mentioned the more 'real' side of cat island. I've seen a lot of videos about cat island but they never touched upon that side of it. Being a huge cat lover myself, while watching this video as much as I found the cats cute I also couldn't help but feel sorry for them ;; I wish I could go over there and build a small shelter and animal clinic for the cats ahaha

I went there 2 years ago and loved it, although I went during winter when it was really cold, so I was only 1 of 2 visors they had that day. When I got to the tourist center there was a group of about 10 very friendly cats who were clearly starving for some human attention as they flocked around me to greet me as I arrived and loved that I spent a few hours with them patting and playing with them. It was the sole reason I made the trip upto Sendai for the one day there, but it was worth it.

If I was a millionaire, I'd buy land on this island, open up a cat themed restaurant that either used local ingredients or payed the local stores to import ingredients (so customers who liked the food could buy the raw ingredients from the locals too) and use a portion of the profits to open a cat charity on the island that included a veteran.
Sadly, I'm not someone with that kind of money :(

A 2kg bag of dry cat food is somewhere in the area of 1200 to 1500 yen, which is roughly 15 to 19$ Canadian. The 1200 yen variety would be the cheap stuff. Meanwhile on Amazon right now I (in Canada) just searched cat food, first result on the list is a 9.1kg bag of Whiskas with real chicken, 25$. You'd be better off buying it here and trying to ship it to them.
I'm still bookmarking this place as a possible retirement location for when I go old and eccentric.
My husband and I went to Dominican Republic for our honeymoon and it was 100% ruined by the underfed and ill kittens, cats, and dogs. We spent the ENTIRE trip trying to feed and pet everyone. We made it our mission to help them as much as possible :(

Thats DEFINITELY different than what is happening on this island. There is population management, regular feeding and basic care for them here. The Dominican republic and many other places around the world have stray populations that can emotionally gut a Westerner. Many people see dogs and cats as a nuisance and local governments do nothing to keep numbers down which is very irresponsible in terms of public health and safety since they have the potential for rabies, worms and sickness. It is horribly sad but again, if the money isn't there animals will suffer. They are domesticated and it is our duty to protect them but many cultures do not see it that way or don't have the resources. Japanese people see cats as a sign of good luck and do a lot for these Cat Island cats.

That dry food probably seriously dehydrates them, and they probably have trouble finding water to drink.
The good thing is that cats are able to easily drink salt water! They naturally filter out the salt, so they have plenty of water being surrounded by the sea ;)

babybluehashyo Uh, I was hoping rachel and jun would. I know they'd give it to the right people. It would make their channel more popular if they started saving animals like that. As in, giving an island full of cats proper medical attention, water and food. This will bring more visitors to the island and promote tourism, more jobs being created and maybe a higher population count as well. All while doing a hell of a good thing. It's a win win situation that I think should start with funding from her users.
That would be awesome, but pushing the responsibility of a whole charity onto two people is a bit unfair. While I agree with you, they have a support $$ button on their channel. If they made a video and said the money donated, or a portion of, would be given to get the cats care...a lot of people would donate. They have a large platform they could use for a cause they care about. It is a large feat but the majority of the j vlogging community share a love of cats, meime, sharla, rach and Jun...etc. if they came together it would be amazing.

Every now and again, I go to Paxi because I have family over there. And cats are normally shot, or put into bags and beaten into rocks until they're killed.
One day we found a kitten that was missing an eye and was very poorly, so we looked after it but couldn't bring it back because he needed to be tested before it could be brought to England.
Luckily the family that we had looked after the little guy but it isn't easy to take them. 3: Xx
if you want to take a cat from there i suggest you stalk it thoroughly first so you know if it has any family or bestfriends then you decide whether to take them all or leave them all

That's something to do a kickstarter/GoFundMe for, have a Japanese vet come over with some help for a month or so and try to round up, fix, heal, tag and name as many cats as possible (keeping enough of the younger ones un-fixed to keep the population going), potentially even putting some of the kittens up for adoption. Worthy cause.
