He wrote I'm a Believer in the 60s and gave it to The Monkees.
    Neil is a gem.

Freedom’s light burning warm refers to the Statue of Liberty. Neil wrote this song for his grandma who came to America by boat when she was 11 years old. Neil has performed America at the White House and on Ellis Island by the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July!

The greatest live performer I have ever seen! My parents took me to my first show when I was six. The lights suddenly go out, the stage filled with fog and blue lights, Music starts building, laser lights shoot all over the place. Music gets louder…band is on fire…crowd is losing their minds. A loud voice comes over the sound system “Ladies and gentlemen…Neil Diamond!” This man walks through the smoke and lasers…dressed in black…arm pumped in the air and the crowd literally gave him a standing ovation before he even sang a note. After that show, I made my parents take me again anytime he came near our house…a tradition I continued into adulthood until Neil retired from Parkinson’s disease in 2018. By that time, three generations of my family had attended a Neil Diamond concert!

I’m was four or five and I know it’s something I remember our parents really gave us a gift!!! We were so lucky! I took my brother my super Neil fan mom to see him in early 2000’s one of the highlight concerts! His love of performance is unequivocal!

I first saw him when young too and had such an awesome time, I went every time he came to my city. So sad Parkinson's forced him to stop performing, but old age comes for everyone unfortunately. He made so many people happy

One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "I Am, I Said", "Sweet Caroline", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Cherry, Cherry", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Shiloh", "Holly Holy", "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", "Desirée", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.

Welcome to the Neil Diamond rabbit hole! As you can see, he has a huge, enthusiastic fan base. He started out as a songwriter, churning out hit songs for other artists before finally recording his music for himself. That was in the mid sixties and he’s been popular ever since. His lyrics and music are top notch, whatever style he chooses. You commented on his voice, which is distinctive and amazing and honestly I think it sounded tired and weak in this video, especially at the beginning. It may have been toward the end of the concert but if the concert itself was in 2008 (when the video was posted) he would have been 67 years old. He’s 82 now. He had to stop touring in 2018 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Oh, and he’s a great performer, as you’ve just seen.
You were right about “I’m a Believer” being in the movie Shrek. It was also a big hit for The Monkees in the sixties. (The Monkees was a sitcom about a band. The actors chosen for the show turned out to be good musicians and they had quite a few hits. You’d probably enjoy watching an episode.) “America” was written for the final scene of Neil’s 1980 remake of the movie The Jazz Singer. And yeah, it’s a great song. His grandparents were all immigrants so he appreciates what America has meant to countless people over the years. The song is very popular, especially on July 4.

One of the greatest singer-songwriters ever, who sold 130 million albums worldwide, but also a dynamic, charismatic performer, breaking attendance records wherever he performed. He was known for doing long and generous concerts. You can't but smile when watching him perform and the audience having fun. The second song is I'm a Believer, the biggest hit in 1966 by The Monkees, but Neil Diamond wrote the song. The third song is very personal to Neil because both his maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated to the USA. Hope you will dig deeper into Neil Diamond's catalogue, he's sensational.

He had to stop touring in 2018 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He made a surprise appearance at the debut of the Broadway musical Beautiful Noise, where he sang one song. That was in December of 2022, if I remember correctly.
He did have an incredible career, didn’t he? I can’t even imagine how many people he entertained at his concerts over the years, not to mention all those who enjoyed his music on the radio, 45s, LPs, 8-track tapes, cassette tapes, CDs, iPods, Pandora, TH-cam, . . .

This brought a tear to my eye. This is my brother's karaoke song. There is a great video of him singing this on you tube! I played it on his memory video at his funeral. God I miss him. Gone at 45, too young, so much more time left for Forever in blue jeans karaoke 😢
