Given this is a UK car channel I think you're a bit harsh on the car. There's nowhere in the UK you can really "legally" open the taps with this car. Having owned one for almost a year I can safely say it handles about as nimbly as any of the previous sports cars I have owned, or driven, when you throw it down the country lanes, and I have the absolute base model without the funky suspension. Would it be a bit quicker off the mark with the 3L engine? sure, but I don't think you can really benefit a lot from it on UK roads, and the MPG would kill your pocket over time. I've taken this to the south of France and managed over 50mpg average for the trip. My experience of 3L cars suggests the 40i would probably be less than 30, which is a massive cost difference. Not withstanding the massive cost difference in the cars themselves. I know this review was done when they were new, but second hand, the 20i can be had for as little as 19k these days. The 40i is closer to 30k for the base model, 40+ for any options. Even new the price differential is over £15k. £44k for the entry model 20i, and almost 60k for the top end M40i. I have just noticed that for a brand new 40i the tax is also over £1000/year. That's utter madness given the tax on an older 20i is just £180.
I don't think the 40i model would be a more focused sports car and from other reviews i've read the lighter 4 pot motor in the nose makes the car more agile which makes sense with an FR setup..Trying to get us to buy the more expensive model there Dan lol
I've driven Z4 M40i, 718 Cayman S, 718 Boxster. M40i sounds the best, interior is far better, and much more comfortable around town i like it a lot but the braking power does not feel very effective, and the steering is a little bit numb you get that the front end is heavy due to engine is at the nose compared to the Porsche which front end feels very light and nimble with engine behind the seats. Porsche changes direction quicker too like a lighter sports car. But, can't stand the 4 cylinders sound it does nothing when you go inside the tunnel.
I’m sure it drives better than the previous model. But the looks of the previous model are just unbeatable. It’s a classic car already ( in my opinion anyway )
That carplay is only free the first year or so, then it's a subscription for £100+ a year. Absolute crazy as it's free on every other manufacturer that offers it. Paying to mirror your phone is an absolute ripoff.
Z4 is for the chop anyway - BMW is due to go through a drastic model reduction program - and from what I have read this pretty much brand new model is a goner already....EV's ahoy.
The only thing good bout the new Z4 is its inline six engine. With the 4 banger its just about the badge and nothing else. Hair dresser car. A rich one albeit. Would have been better with a manual
@J CR there are cars with 700+hp coming with manuals, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. While autos are absolutely faster there are traditional H pattern tremec T56 transmissions running 7's in the 1/4 mile one running high 6's with well over 1000hp on the ground. Not knowing how to drive has absolutely nothing to do with it as a horrible driver will burn a clutch with 150hp.
@J CR no I said all that because your statement about manual transmissions not handling the power is ignorant, and a proper six speed can shift fast enough to run a 6 second 1/4 mile at 180mph+ again making your reply ignorant. The only part of your reply that made sense was stock autos shift faster than manuals now days. Built properly there are still people managing manual shifts in under 100ms which is faster than most traditional automatics still. There was really nothing to back up your completely unsubstantiated claim. A bad driver will ruin an automatic too happens all the time
There's a good argument to be made the that 4 pot being 130 kgs lighter makes it a better actual "sports" car. It will be nimble in the corners and lighter is always better in that regard.

Just bought one, waiting on delivery, stage 1 power upgrade booked in
It looks beautiful in person. I like it a lot. But, can't justify paying a lot more than a slightly used F-Type Coupe with proper sounding V6.
I jus bought this myself.. all l can say is wow 👌👌👌
Judith Ndlovu mine will be delivred next weekend. 20i - misano blue - m sport. ❤️
Mine is delivered tomorrow!
habe einen 20i im Dezember bestellt in Glacier Silver mit M Paket und 19’‘ Felgen, wird im Juni geliefert ❤
... Fazit nach 2 Jahren?
Nice review, only thing is, when you turn on the car, and I get ready to listen to the exhurst, you put on music :(
I had a shitton of fun on the 1st gen
6 cylinders, 194 or so hp, awesome Gear change...
A shitton you say?
Umm some of the info is off by a little bit. Like the roof can go up and down in 10 sec
Came here to mention this too (only 4 years late lol). I think the 0-60 time is a little slower than reality too in my experience.
This new Z4 might be better to drive than the last one but the looks! They have definitely taken a step back on that front!
I completely disagree
Hola me puedes decir la diferencia de potencia del 20i y 30i si solamente es ecu
what colour is that
ANYONE KNOW THE NAME OF THE BLUE PAINTWORK, IT DOESN'T SHOW IN THE UK BROCHURES, THANKS.
It is Misano Blue
I have one with Red leather upholstry and it is absolutely georgeous!
@@MrPieter1971 Thanks. I saw that as an option, but it looked so much less pale than on this video.
This or new MX-5?
MX-5 if you can fit in it.. A much cheaper option..
Sounds rubbish çompaired to Mini S F56 even?
think i will stick with my old banger Z3 2.2
Lot of cabin turbulence & a wind deflector is an extra & cannot be retro-fitted to basic models. Unnecessarily wide.

Soft top, and no decent audio is a negative for me.
SOFT TOP ON A CONVERTIBLE...A NEGATIVE FOR YOU?...
@@HIOP0 I prefer hard top convertible, soft top too expensive to replace.
@@petermitchell6348 AND COST OF REPAIRING A BROKEN HARDTOP FOLDING ROOF?

The old one was better. Simple as that!
No.

So which roadster would you recommend to me instead ?
Rubbish, not all people want to roar around at max every time

Not a very attractive vehicle. I thought the Supra was ugly but the BMW is blandly ugly.
It's weird how so many people like this cars design. It's a bland shoe shaped convertible, it should hurt any petrol heads feelings.
