This track is from a Lord of the Rings inspired epic 14 track album.
About this track :
“When our fire has burned the dark,
and our final song is sung
Distant shores will call us home
and we'll be forever changed, forever changed”
My favourite writing by Tolkien is the Chapter “The Grey Havens” as he describes Frodo boarding a boat and and passing out of middle earth into the Undying Lands.
The sound of singing comes across the water - and the “grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise”.
Compositional notes
Here the melody from track 8 that I wrote as a lament for Gandalf returns. But this time is extended into a full song and instead of having a sad minor tonality, the underlying harmony gives it an uplifting feel.
The song fades and the whole work finishes with a reprise of the opening melody from Illuvatars song that has been appearing throughout the album. This time the melody has a #4 in it; the lydian mode, which I chose to try to conjure up an image of the travellers finally leaving Middle Earth and crossing the sea to heaven “the undying lands”
I had a lot of fun recording the 100 piece choir on this one and getting them all to improvise. And so the album loop is complete. It starts and ends with the heavenly choir.
I just love the passion and intensity this young plays with, unlike many musicians he puts his very soul into his music. The deep romantic Celtic influences appeal to me, there again they would I am a Scot. Musicians are really finding it hard to survive financially in this current Covid world, so please don’t just watch the video go out and buy the album. I recommend you also check out his first album which has a number of different influences.
