  • If you love Clair de Lune, you'll love Arabesque No. 1 (Andantino con moto). Claude Debussy wrote this magical piece between 1888--1891, around the time he wrote his first version of Clair de Lune. It's a wonderful example of his early work and early Impressionism. The piece begins at 8:20.
Duane says, "As I play this, I like to remember walking through the lavender fields of Provence, France. I could smell the flowers and see the wind gently (musically) moving the rows of lavender. At 10:40, the music brings to mind seeing a grand chateau in the distance. At the very end, when I play the large sweeping arpeggios (11:51), I think of the wind diminishing into a soft breeze that then gently floats away, rustling the lavender as it goes."
What does this piece make you think of?
Next week: Debussy's Étude 11 Pour Les Arpèges Composés (an example of Debussy's later work).

I’ve listened to a lot of folks talk about piano music on TH-cam and you are among the best. Really interesting content and of course top notch playing. I’m so grateful for this day and age where I can get an education from the comfort of my own home. Would you consider talking about some Bach?
