My first RPG was the D&D Red Box that I saw on the shelf at Toys R Us back in the early or mid 80s. Larry Elmore's art on the box was just drew my attention and I couldn't stop looking at it. I'd never even heard of an RPG before either I'm sure. I picked it up with some money my world's greatest grandma gave me for my birthday. I did that solo for a while. Then I met my best friend in high school art class and he got me into Marvel FASERIP (he started me with the basic yellow box). He also introduced me to Palladium's Robotech Macross and then I ran him through some Teenagers From Outer Space from R. Talsorian. Even though we live in different parts of the country now we still play an online campaign of FASERIP with other guys, and he and I still get together for Gen Con every other year. While living in Japan in the early 90s I also managed to get in a bit of RuneQuest with a group of fellow expats.
My first introduction to the hobby was in the mid '90s, AD&D 2e. Not much of a big story, it was an after-school gaming club. I saw them using little figures and cheering on die rolls.. I had to play. Loved it since!
It was Christmas 1977, a buddy of mine invited me over the day after Christmas and handed me a cool blue box with a dragon on the front. He said his mom picked up this new game and as I was a year older (I was 9) he wanted me to read all the rules and tell him how to play. Wow, from that moment on I was the perma-DM. Our first module was In Search of the Unknown and I was hooked.
Its 2016 and i was studying overseas. Don't remember how i got to know about the hobby but my first experience with dnd was playing 5th edition on roll20. I would be multiple playing games a week online during my time in university and manage to find 1 cool GM that im still in contact with and play his games if only work didn't get in my way. Online is my only experience with trpg in general so when i hear stories people hanging out in houses or having difficulty with initiative i was culture shock. I love this channel as i could learn more of Dnd history and steal tips or tricks on how to run as a GM better.
@@whitevalyrian3086 that’s a cool story. I enjoy playing online due to how much technology we have at our fingertips. Don’t get me wrong I liked playing face to face but lugging things around since I’m old school gets to be a pain. Thanks for the comment and stopping by!
Well it was 1987 and I was in the Marine Corps stationed in 29 Palms and a friend asked me if I wanted to play D&D. The rest is history so to speak. I’m planning on making a video on this on my channel too.
1980 I was in athletics at Springtown texas school district. It was too cold to run so they had us lifting weights in the weight room. After we were all done and showered I climbed up on an incline bench and was looking down over this kid who had some weird map on the ground that was white with blue ink. There was a picture on a booklet that said, "The Keep on the Borderlands" I asked him what he was doing and he told me it was a game. He had these weird looking dice and was taking notes on things. I said....and I quote, "Where's the game board or pieces that represent you?" He replied, "Oh it's all done in our head but this is the map" My reply I have forever regretted was, "That's dumb"...... Oh boy did I ever eat those words over the last 40 + years. lol. It is in fact NOT dumb and I love it to this day. Springtown was a magical place because of its closeness to Fort Worth. All of my friends dads worked at like General Dynamics or Bell Helicopter or Motorola.... So it was an affluent suburb with lots of smart kids with smart parents. Almost all of the jocks and everyone played DnD and read and it was just a cool time and place. Churches everywhere, everyone attended but I never saw an inkling of the Satanic panic stories. It was an awesome time to be a kid.
