I've been following this channel for over a year and only this week have I started to watch the early videos.

I've been watching for a couple years now and Dungeon Craft is absolutely top of the list of channels. I am very excited to finally get into my own apartment again (hopefully any day now) after 8 years of various alternatives that didn't really allow me the mindset or stability to craft stuff. I never watched these early episodes. Anyway I will be keeping busy in my free time doing these projects you set for us. Thanks Professor. Your channel means a lot to me.

Crafting and painting miniatures is the final frontier for me in this hobby, but resolved to give it a try based on your videos. I've been DMing for since the 90's and something I've never attempted.

Thanks for watching. I'd check out Ultimate Dungeon Terrain first. Also, XPS foam comes in 1/2 inch sheets now, so there's no reason to glue foam core to tiles anymore.

I bought hard into Dwarven Forge, but I also find negative spaces superior to walls.

  • @odin3141

I like to play somewhere in between theater of the mind and terrain; I have a dry erase battle mat and markers, with simple cardboard tokens to represent players and some NPCs (monsters get drawn, usually just a circle with a letter in it). We still use our imagination to visualize, but the specifics are laid out regardless just to reduce confusion and to give the technical players something to use without explaining every combatant’s position in detail.
By the end of the year tho I’m hoping to make enough terrain to justify buying minis, and I’ll switch to that.

I have no idea why I only ran across this channel now...but...happens! Glad I found it just the same. I am a big fan of DMScotty and Wyloch and I've been building terrain for just over 2 years now. I now have an embarrassing amount of terrain but, hey, reasons right? Like you, I am pretty frugal and I also don't like the walls that the name brand stuff has. I started DM'ing a few months ago and vary between theater of the mind, use of terrain, and even hybrids variations of each. I appreciate why you don't use terrain for the Lovecraft stuff. Use for a dragon?...yes! Use for C'thulu?...probably not.

    • @DUNGEONCRAFT1
      @DUNGEONCRAFT1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

That's my feeling. Glad you found the channel. FYI--I 'll be shooting a video about how to make my NEW dungeon tiles shortly. They're smaller and easier to transport. Of course, DM Scotty, Wyloch, and Black Magic Craft rock!

  • @ShadowPa1adin

I just use a set of dry-erase tiles ("The Master's Atlas" by Stratagem). It's a easy, cost-efficient halfway-point between "Dwarven Forge"-style model-tiles and dry-erase grid-maps. You can just draw things like extra walls and stuff on them when you need to and if you are doing something more "theater-of-the-mind" you can just slap a few down for a quick battle-map.

How many rooms and passages would you recommend crafters start with? I've made two rooms and three hallways, thus far. These tiles are super simple and fun to make, by the way. I tried the ultimate terrain with foam insulation, but I found it tough to work with. Maybe I'll revisit UDT in the future.

A tip for new crafters: If you've never done much with an Xacto knife before, don't buy an Xacto knife! Don't buy a knock-off either. Go to Amazon and search for B01J21POXK and see the Fiskars product that comes up. You don't have to get it from Amazon, that's just a convenient place most of the world can search for it easily.
I would normally not be suggesting you pay a premium for a Fiskars product ($9 with one blade!?), but I'm going to this time and I hope the Professor will approve. But … the blade Does Not Slip, at all. I can't say that of a generic Xacto-type knife nor the branded ones. They always do. An experienced crafter doubtless knows how to deal with that, but if you don't, I'd say get the better tool and avoid getting to learn what realistic blood looks like. 😁

I"ve played mostly TotM--with hand drawn paper maps & simple minis (chess pieces or other scavenged from board games) and never got into the more 3d variants you show here, let alone some of the more elaborate sets available. I've done that kind of modeling too, with HO gauge trains.
What are your thoughts on paper minis & paper maps? (like Zen: zenseeker.net/PaperMiniatures/Fantasy.htm) Even a shoe box is getting to be a bit much to carry around these days. I don't currently play at home--either traveling or online.
Speaking of which--what's your take on online play?
Totally bingeing on your channel! It is so refreshing to find like minded gamers who aren't locked into a particular system. Looking forward to soaking in more great material!
    Thanks so much for posting!

ok, so they're super cheap and fast to make and something that almost every DM wishes they had. does anyone sell dungeon pieces like these? It seems like a cool product that would easily undercut the pricey and/or heavy alternatives.
