    No, I think the button at the top of the hill is a great idea. Imagine building up in your head for years that you want to die, and this is how you want to go. But then when you're actually taking that long, long climb up the hill, the physical reality of what you're doing sinks in and you panic. You don't want to do this anymore. You want to live. Imagine now that there's no button, and you spend the rest of that long, long climb screaming to stop the ride. Begging for your life. That's fucking horrifying. Having a last minute chance to opt out after you've climbed the hill is honestly the only ethical way to make this coaster, imo.

    I saw this guy's TED talk and he isn't that weird or crazy. Julijonas Urbonas designs these rides and concepts to give the viewers a genuine experience about them. He does not design these things to have them built, but to provoke thoughts, emotions, and a new way of looking at things. It's very interesting tbh.

    I always find the 'safer than driving' claims to be a little silly. The reason is that you spend a hell of a lot of time in a car and almost no time in a roller coaster. If you spent as much time in a rollercoaster than driving I am not so sure it is actually more safe.

    • @karlrose405
      @karlrose405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      This is actually a very interesting point of view. One could totally do some math based on some statistics in order to compare the risk of death between driving a car and riding a roller coaster. But that person would have to keep in mind several things though, so it's not an easy task:
      1: It's more dangerous to drive a car in some countries than other countries.
      2: It's more dangerous to ride a roller coaster in some countries than other countries.
      3: It's more dangerous to ride some types of roller coasters than some other types of roller coasters.
      4: If one is drunk or on drugs, the chance of that individual dying while driving a car increases a lot more than if that person rides a roller coaster.
      And some other factors as well probably

    • @Corrupted

      Keep in mind that most roller coasters are operating every few minutes (or constantly with multiple trains) for hours a day, seven days a week, for decades. And whenever one actually has an accident, it makes the national news.
      Car accidents happen multiple times a day in every large city on Earth. Even if you drive only once a month but ride coasters every day, you're probably STILL at far greater risk in the car than on the ride.

    • @Chris-xo2rq
      @Chris-xo2rq ปีที่แล้ว +21

      No, even accounting for miles travelled they are MUCH safer than driving. Driving is the most dangerous thing an average person does on a regular basis. (Note: I said "average person", if you have a particularly dangerous profession this may not apply to you).

    • @LordPrometheous
      @LordPrometheous ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even so, hundreds, maybe thousands of people will ride a given coaster at a park, maybe 20 to 30 people at a time, so even if the ride is 20 minutes, that's 40 to 60 minutes of riding time in total, likely as much as, if not more than the average time spent in a car each day. How many times have you heard of a coaster accident vs car accidents? I think that statistically, coasters are far, far safer than driving.

    so, small quibble, but it's not HYPOXIA that kills you, it's ISCHEMIA. in other words, not lack of oxygen supply, but lack of perfusion altogether. there's a very big difference. you can easily survive a minute of no blood - you do that every time you hold your breath for an underwater dive. this is because you have a lot of oxygen in your blood. but if you drop all the blood supply out of the brain, that's very different, and probably sufficient to kill.
    think of it this way: you can make yourself faint in just a few seconds by compressing both carotids. that cuts off the blood to your brain. you can recover from that because the blood comes rushing back once you drop. but if you have zero perfusion for a minute straight, by the time the blood has a chance to come back the parts of your brainstem responsible for maintaining life would've probably already shut down irrevocably. your heart wouldn't receive the signal to beat, your lungs wouldn't receive the signal to breathe. game over.

    The fear from rollercoasters is less from the statistical odds of death, its more the lack of control combined with the speed. Sure, cars are more dangerous, but you still have a measure of control in most situations. In a rollercoaster, you're strapped in and hoping that everyone in charge of the ride did their job right.

  • @machshfive

    Fascinating! I love hearing thoughts about stuff like this.
    Here's my thoughts coming from an artist. (Note: I'm not familiar with this guy's other works)
    The euthanasia coaster is definitely an interesting idea to think about, and I'd consider it a very successful art piece. Setting logic aside, the point of it is to make one think about death, and just by me typing this comment, I'd say it definitely does it's job.
    There are so many ways to look at death, most perspectives being about "fear of the unknown". Death is something we don't understand and can't control, and because it's so far out of our control it terrifies us.
    Now, roller coasters are the very essence of "being in control" every loop, ever turn, even the seat of the coaster was taken into consideration into making it safe. But the thrill it gives to it's rider is a brief moment of our body feeling out of control. As in sensory overload, gravity shift, being thrown around without a choice...it's almost a glimpse into what it might feel like to face death. But at the same time not really, because the coaster is totally in control and the trust we put into the coaster to keep us safe is what makes it into a pleasant experience. It's a bit like watching a scary movie on TV, it's a controlled illusion of feeling totally out of control.
    So with all that being said, the significance of this piece is not so much as "this coaster will kill you", but to think about death differently.
    It's a visual argument for letting people be in control of their end and making that choice feeling safe and confident.
    Now, with all that being written, I totally chuckled at this video talking about the logic. It's like trying to take figurative speech literally. But it was very interesting! 👍

And I DID go on a few, fighting my irrational fear ,yet my body still sees it as a traumatic event that we survived by a miracle...and I KNOW there was basically 0 chance of me dying, but its like telling my body it can levitate - it screams BS back at me.

      I’m fairly scared of heights, the lift hill is by far the worst bit. I much prefer launch coasters. For some reason whilst it’s moving after the lift hill I’m fine, which is why I end up gritting my teeth and doing it. My daughter is obsessed and Daddy won’t go on many, so I’m ‘volunteered’ because she’s only 8. She dragged me on storm chaser, (like waltzer cars, they free spin as you go round) and we were put in the 2nd row of the first car, so we went up the lift hill backwards. It was horrendous (coaster was great but the lift hill was terrible). I adore the Hulk coaster in Universal IOA, I’d rather go on it 20 times than storm chaser again!

    Yes. If I was terminally ill, I'd want to go out in such a way that takes me peacefully. Considering I'm out of shape and have asthma, I would already die from taking it without being terminally ill. And what better way than a roller coaster designed for that exact purpose? I don't mean now, obviously, but if it came down to it, this is how I would want to go.

    I could see a euthanasia flat ride being built as an alternative to the death penalty, but not a Euthanasia Coaster for the most sick. Something like this would never be approved for the proposed use. I do see prisons building Euthanasia Rides, though, since Legal Injection is literally torturing prisoners.

    • @ShoSensei
      @ShoSensei 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yeah, imagine how tortuous lethal injection is for innocent animals whose only crime is being unwanted, unloved, dumped in a kill shelter. But by all means let's be more concerned about monsters that have killed, raped and tortured ppl. Let's not "torture" them with lethal injection. 🙄 also, let's not forget gas chambers that horribly kills innocent animals, but is considered too inhumane for the monsters that deserve it. People that cry about "poor prisoners" being tortured makes me want to puke. SO f*cked up. 🤬🤬

      @UndrcoverCactus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ShoSensei It doesn’t matter if you think criminals deserve it or not, the death penalty is still bad because it’s EXTREMELY expensive (significantly more than life in prison). The only way to make it less expensive would be to put less effort into making 100% sure the person is guilty, which would result in more innocent people getting executed, which I think we can all agree is bad. And we already have cases of innocent people getting executed, so clearly even the expenses we’re already dumping into it isn’t enough.

      @@ShoSensei are you in some kind of weird mental place right now where you delusionally believe human life isn't worth immeasurably more than the life of a nonsentient animal? Lmfao. Even murderers rapists and dictators are human. In fact it's completely impossible to commit a crime which makes you no longer a human. So I don't know why you would bring up the crimes of the prisoners as if that would make any difference. And although Animal life and treatment are both important and valuable. They are not human lives. which are priceless. and again thats due to sentience. Animals are instinct driven, and have no knowledge of themselves. One final time that doesn't mean they can be freely mistreated. But it does mean there is absolutely no comparison at all between an animal life and a human life. The smartest animals on earth are only comparable to a literally baby human. And in adulthood when most of these cases would be carried out the scale of what you are extinguishing by taking a human life is so immense its absurd to compare it to a dog or cat. Who may have done nothing wrong and should be saved wherever and whenever possible and given to a home full of dignity and love. But an animal does not have that rich inner life, all that personal development psychological profile and history and personality and experiences and ideas and identity and relationships and language and influence of others potentially worldwide for good or bad. killing a human means books that might not be written, peoples minds who may not be changed, kids who may not be born. Studies that may not be done. A family left behind which also did nothing wrong but now has to suffer in fu consciousness and awakeness and sentience the loss they gave experienced. Etc lol. and again just compare this to an instinct driven animal. It's not close lol.
