Printing a 1930s mailman for National Thank A Mail Carrier Day (February 4)

February 4th is National Thank A Mail Carrier Day! Now, more than ever, make sure to send thanks to those that make sure our mail arrives in a timely manner.
For today, Howard letterpress printed an electrotype (copy of a woodcut) that was made in the 1930s. The image depicts a mail carrier holding a large letter. The text below, set in 30 point Caslon, states, “Thank your mail carrier.” This was printed with red oil base ink using our Washington hand press.
We are thankful for our mail carriers for sending out our online orders and also for those who have been supporting the Sacramento History Museum by purchasing from our store.

My grandfather was a rural route mail carrier for 40+ years - 1919-1960. He started with horse and buggy. After they started driving cars he once got stuck on the railroad tracks. He was called a hero because he got the mail sack out before the train hit the car.

I love that style of illustration! It conjures the image of 1940's movies, cars, advertising, etc. Just in case anyone is curious about the acronym "ASMR", MOST of this channel's videos qualify; hundreds of titles out there with "ASMR" in them are pathetic clickbait. It's a congenital gift of internal wiring; the ambient sound, crinkling of paper, creaking of equipment, etc. If I worked there I'd be in a true state of tranquility. I've collected many of their installments; queue them up in VLC or video player of choice and voila, the perfect sedative :)

We never see our carrier anymore as they come after 6 pm. Miss them going by. Our favorite one would stop under our trees for lunch and then play frisbee with our Golden Retriever who was in love with her.
