Story:
The film begins when an old man called Ghanashyam (Sujal Nepal) leaves his bag for a night at the writer's home. Suspicious, the writer checks the contents of the bag only to find an old manuscript which contains 11 short stories. As Dharabasi starts reading, he is transported to Nepal of the 18th century. We are introduced to a young Ghanashyam who lives with his mother Kanchhi (Garima Panta) and his ailing father (Deepak Chhetri). After her husband passes away, Kanchhi's life becomes a nightmare. Expected to sacrifice herself on the funeral pyre, Kanchhi enters almost a daze like state and goes from being a strong-willed, loving mother to a helpless widow. As she prepares herself for the ceremony and Ghanashyam comes to terms with being orphaned, the anguish of both mother and son becomes palpable on screen. While expertly depicting the pain of the protagonists, director Yadav Kumar Bhattarai also explores the tender relationship between a mother and a son. Perhaps the best two lines in the movie are delivered by the sister-in-law who sums up the audiences' thoughts when she says: "Why is it that only a woman has to sacrifice her life when a man dies, why can't he do the same ... And why is it acceptable for a man to marry for the second time" Although the Sati system was abolished decades ago, Jhola is still relevant to today's Nepal where, unfortunately, cases of sexual harassment, violence against women, trafficking remain all too common.

Abolition of sati was a must. And the one who abolished sati is a very great person. He has performed a big deed. He deserves a salute and respect as well.
I am thankful that this modern age doesn't follow this Sati System.
People of this age are lucky, this system is no more given the importance; it is abolished.

Hi! I am from the Philippines and I am married to a Nepalese with 2 kids. This movie made me cry big time! I am really sad thinking about women's discrimination here in Nepal. We also live in village and most of the family here is still following tight tradition and culture. I am not saying to remove or forget the culture and tradition but I just really wish women's discrimination here should be stop 😔😭

@@allbyhisgrace8925 Back then marrying outside of your culture was even worse. You would most likely have no support and not even find a person outside of Nepal since that’s where they lived. Nepal now is not like this anymore, there are definitely things that could improve but with our generation it’ll change, it’ll get better hopefully. But no, nepali women now that live outside of Nepal or even in Nepal are quite free to do as they please.

This movie always gives me chills. The culture of our ancient nepal thanks to the director and our great minister CHANDRA SHAMSHER to remove and destroy this system. As mentioned in last part we female are still struggling and getting abused which is really unacceptable and should be removed. Everyone is equal born free and everyone should be free from all kind of discrimination

so nice movie of real tradition of nepal tagged as sati pratha, actors actress ,directors , balkalakar whole team did so well and heart touching i saw movie with my 80 yrs ama ,her eyes were full of tears while seeing the movie and all typical village stuffs . I really liked the movie. It is really heart touching. I couldn't control my tears.. As said in the end of the movie that though the sati tradition had been abolished, injustice to women in different ways is still present. Such injustice and violence against women should be stopped...each human being should respect womankind.
