    New teacher! I have kids struggling to remember long division but said they learned it box method style......this was wonderful for me to learn as someone who had NO idea what that method was. Thank you!!

    It’s different box methods and this one was the most simple way I could understand well for my child to understand. I’m still use to the long division method but trying to show my son. He struggling so I looked on TH-cam to see different ways to them and this one for division I believe he is getting it. Thank you for this video!

    Thank you, Miss Burnell. I had to review some common core division to help my nephew and so far I have only seen long division and a method involving circles. Personally I am not a big fan of the change Common Core made to Mathematics, but I appreciate being able to learn it so I may help others who struggle.

    I struggled in school as a kid and math was one of my most difficult subjects: this NEW MATH method is something I found myself doing instinctively when tyring to understand the concept of the equation. I understand what you guys are trying to do, but this new method needs to be more steamlined and simplified. The concept of this new math is SOLID but you are only substituing one receipe for another !

    • @teascobie6557
      @teascobie6557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hate it when adults say there are terrible at math. Provided the child has all their faculties ie no learning problems they can learn math with ease. The issue with adults is that when they were children they did not learn their fundamentals properly and or had no interest in learning them. The school kept moving the child to the next grade while they did not fully understand math. And since math builds on previous material learned and that material the child gets frustrated. This continues into adulthood. Schools are also rigid they show one way of doing something. If the way you learn doesnt fit the way they teach you have a problem. But i also understand there probably isnt time at school to learn many methods of doing things given the number of students in the classroom.

    • @Austin1990
      @Austin1990 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teascobie6557
      Or, often times math was never really explained to them to begin with. For instance, this method seems so rigid and tedious, but it is literally how long division works conceptually. Everyone should should have seen this before learning long division. It should be like how a professor derives an equation on the whiteboard before students use the equation to solve problems. At the same time, having kids work through something so tedious is brutal.

And then they try to pull a guilt trip if a teacher says no, as if you're just an awful person in the wrong career. 794/5=158.4 The remainder of (4) is not expressed as fraction as it should be. Therefore 158 with a remainder of 4 is incomplete. How could you express this in real life where tolerances in terms of thousandths is critical???

    • @suzannelesser5468
      @suzannelesser5468 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right technically, but she’s doing division on a 4th grade math level. On that level, remainders are acceptable and even preferred by the answer key. (Otherwise, it looks like the student cheated and used a calculator!) Long division is challenging enough to fourth graders without tossing in fractions/decimals. I’m an editor by profession, and we also simplify grammar rules considerably in elementary and even high school school compared to how complex we proof for in print. I assume most areas of academia are dumbed down in a similar way.

    • @gboldero1
      @gboldero1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@suzannelesser5468
      Actually, Eagle Studios is incorrect because you would have add a zero to the 4 in order to do a decimal, so therby the answer is 158.8.

    • @suzannelesser5468
      @suzannelesser5468 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I stand corrected. I didn’t actually do the problem or run it through a calculator. You are right-The answer is 158.8. However, I stand by my “bigger picture” point, the question the original poster was asking. For 4th grade (or beginner long division), kids need to learn to express answers with remainders. Answers written with remainders are not “wrong” (if the instructions ask for them) and “remainders” often occur in real life, not just in the math books.

  • @Greeny631
    @Greeny631 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3
