The Global Birdfair at Rutland in Leicestershire. 2023

- This week I am showing a film of my recent visit to the Global Birdfair at the Rutland show ground 2023. It is an event I try and attend every year to look at new equipment and books and talk to exhibitors about their countries and what they offer for bird photography.
In addition I love to network with other wildlife photographers. To hear what they have been doing.
This year I was only able to make it on the Sunday as I got back from Spain Saturday morning.

I moved to Lithuania 10 years ago and when people say why do I love the place, I always say it's for the wildlife. I did a personal guided tour of the Nemunas delta over 3 days last autumn late in the migration season and was astonished, even as an experienced nature watcher, at the birdlife. Ornithology is thriving here and you will have a great time! I have just acquired the right to use a perfect piece of private land to set up feeding stations and hides and will be doing so with your guidance and wisdom at hand. Thanks for all your inspiring output.

Yes good to meet another TH-camr. When you are retired and have lots of time on your hands you should set up an annual convention of wildlife photography youtubers. Good use of all those organising skills you leant in the fire service!

Interesting bird fair, Mike. Not at all what I expected. I went to one one time and it all about buying selling and trading show birds. Not at all like the one you have in your video. Yours was much more interesting to me. Thanks.
Two very different events. But I have found both interesting.
I am myself from Lithuania and I visited one of the Boris Belchev hides with white tailed eagles.had great session and 11 eagles show up that day. Highly recommended to visit. And Boris Belchev such great host!!!

Good summary of the event. I enjoyed it this year having missed it last year, despite the 'wetland creation' going on outside!
Good to know the photographers usually go on a Friday, im planning to do all 3 day next year. If theres a TH-cam meet up Id be up for that too :)

Good video Mike. I went a couple of years ago when it was a quagmire. People were getting their cars stuck in the car park.
The new venue has a better car park. But this year was very wet.
I only wish we had a fair like this in the South. Certainly worth a trip by the looks of your video Mike
I'm in the west country now and it's a bit of a trek. The one year they stepped away from Rutland and came to WWT London Wetland Centre was fantastic, I was living in London at the time. It would be great if they would come to other venues around the country from time to time, possibly on a smaller scale.

Very nice video. If you decide on and buy a thermal vision, please make a video about it. This is still something new for many birdwatchers.
If you're looking for a thermal Mike, I've done some research, first trying the smartphone-click devices and then going to a monocle. I compared specs like sensor resolution, sensitivity, you name it in excel and came to buy (and love!) the relatively inexpensive HIKMICRO LYNX PRO LH19. Detection up to ~1km, 384 × 288 pixels thermal resolution, I love it!
Have found nightjar in the wild and was able to photograph it from up close! For only €1400,- (still a lot of money) this kind of specs are normally found only on thermals of €5000 and up!.

And now for something completely different! I used to go to the bird show but unfortunately it now clashes with a particular airshow which I always attend, so for someone who couldn’t go I really enjoyed this video. Nice one.
I had not idea how to make this film, but enjoyed the challange.

Tragopan is markably heavier than Buteo.

Hi! What kind of resolution for your thermal optics you aim? I have very basic one Dahua M20-B15. I consider it being very good value, still it is rather low resolution and I wonder if I can find something with even better price to performance ratio.
I know so little about them. I do not know what to buy.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Well... In such case maybe I can sugest something? Unless all night wildlife observation is your thing I would recommend monocular instead of binoculars. They need double VOx sensors, double lenses made of special crystals, colimation and integration. They are INSANELY expensive. Monoculars on the other hand have only one sensor and lens, and for spotting and identification of wildlife they are more than sufficient. It is also easier to record the image. Dahua models seem to represent great valuve with prices in Poland between 2000PLN and 9000PLN which translates to 400 do 1800 quids depending on sensor size (three sizes M20, M40 & M60) and lens focal length (three focal lengths for M20 and M40 and 2 focal lengths for M60) - the bigger the more expensive.
