- “Trombón Caliente” was commissioned by Robert Mott for the group, Mr. Jefferson’s Bones, in celebration of the fifteenth annual Tromblow’in Workshop hosted at James Madison University. This tongue-in-cheek tango uses different levels of spiciness to dictate tempo. The opening is “poco picante,” or a “little spicy,” generating excitement as more trombones join the party (a questionable decision…) The music soon flows into the “picante” section, followed by rhythmic figures that propel players toward the “muy picante” conclusion. This entertaining work for trombone quintet will, indeed, leave the trombones… caliente!
