    I watched this film at a stage of my life where I was very troubled and anyone who would look me in the eye could notice that I was infected by fear. I watched this movie and Flint Sky (Jaguar's father) reminded me that my parents did not raise me to see me live in fear. No movie scene has ever made such a change in my life as this one did.

    Jaguar Paws instincts are what makes him such a great leader. He was the first one to sense other people in the forest and also the first one to go after the ravaged tribe to ask more questions. He knew whatever ravaged that tribe could possibly ravage his.

    • @_Mayibongwe
      @_Mayibongwe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      Right. I think had the father not stopped Jaguar from asking further and not downplaying his curiosity as fear/sickness, their village probably would have been better prepared or even have relocated altogether.

    • @knives5964
      @knives5964 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      @@_Mayibongwe They probably wouldn't have moved, Flint Sky was the leader, the type of old leader that didn't believe in fear and his peace being tainted, he would've refused to move as that would've been a giving in to fear, for some it may seem like a coward move but he believed in standing his ground and that if it was his time to die, he would die.

      @@knives5964 pffft! that was BS! Flint Sky was wrong here! Jaguar Paws's fear is called "rational fear". I agree with @Mayibongwe

    • @rhaenentargaryen9996
      @rhaenentargaryen9996 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@_Mayibongwe That is certainly a valid argument. Flint Sky's dismissal of Jaguar Paw's curiosity as fear or sickness could be seen as a missed opportunity to gather important information about the threat facing their village. Without that information, they were less prepared to deal with the danger when it ultimately arrived. However, it is also worth noting that Flint Sky was likely acting out of a desire to protect his son and his tribe from potential harm, which is also a valid concern. In any case, the scene is open to interpretation and viewers may have differing opinions on Flint Sky's actions.

      soakedbearrd for pure entertainment value this movie was great. For any semblance of historical accuracy it’s an abomination. Lol not unlike most Mel Gibson movies portraying historical events. The Passion wasn’t bad tho, but once I was able to accept how terribly inaccurate this movie was, I really grew to enjoy it. Although I’ll admit that 10,000 BC is one of my guilty pleasures and just as accurate as Apocolypto lol.

      Yet in this case a healthy amount of fear would have been appropriote as a motivator for assessing the coming threat. Fear taken to an extreme is dangeroua, but so is carelessness. They got a lot of stuff right, but the ancient mayans were likely very different. During the time that this was happening (the height of maya civilization), this area would have looked very different. Rather than a bunch of isolated hunter gatherers, they would be a bunch of farmers living in villages and towns with large cleared fields. The forest that exists nowadays came after their civilization collapsed.

    I'm reading below in the comments this crap-> 'fear is good, it keeps you alive.' His point is that you cannot live with fear, you cannot let it overwhelm your thoughts and actions, it will eventually paralyze you and destroy your tribe. His point is NOT that you can't at times be fearful, not that you shouldn't let the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, this is of course inevitable. Imagine, for just a second, that you were the patriarch of this tribe. What would be the optimal image for you to portray to your people?

    This scene is awesomely directed and acted. Many wondered some of the reactions and here is some explanation.
    Between tribes, there is no alliance and every tribes are sworn enemy and by just meeting each other usually result in fight and deaths and hence the intense natural respond when they met. Jaguar's father speech is to prevent unneccesary killings and convince them to leave.
    When they found out their land is ravage, the other tribe didnt reveal the details becos he is hoping Jaguar's tribe also suffer the same since they are also enemy.
    Jaguar's father didnt pester on to know the details as he assumed its another another tribe and no point knowing the details and taking the warning is enough. Also further talk might result in arguement and explode into fight and deaths.

    Too much is being made of the historical accuracy of the movie. As far as I know Mel Gibson never claimed to be a history professor. Enjoy the movie for what it is, a caricature of Mayan civilization, and a really good story. The acting and costumes are fantastic, historically accurate or not.

    Flint Sky was a very wise & honorable man! He died like a "man",with honor and integrity! My father had his battles in his lifetime and sought answers . Some he discovered in time and some never revealed to him on his journey,but he fought the good fight and I loved and respected him for it. No man has ever had all the answers or were prepared for everything life threw at them,but men stand up and battle through it as best they can and in doing so they are observed by others and their struggle is noted in the hearts and minds of those not blinded by self-righteousness.

    You hear a lot of romanticizing the America's ingenious life, but, fuck living at any point in the past. It sucked no matter if you grew up in Europe, Asia, or the Americas during modern period.

      +Oromo Man That's a pointless discussion. The atrocities commited by europeans are justified by human nature, like the ones of all other ethnic groups.
      Black people enslaved their peers and selled them to europeans, Egyptians enslaved Hebrews, Roman empire enslaved white, black and arabic people equally. Over a milion white christians were selled to Muslims (see "Barbary slave trade"), and most probably throughout the ages there were more black people enslaved by arabic populations than by europeans. India works for millenia upon a system of casts where the Untouchables, representing over 20% of population, are even worse than slaves.
      Europeans aren't a special group. If Blacks, Asians, Arabs and others had the european technology, money, and had the need to have slaves for specific purposes they would have done the same thing that the white people did. Or well, should I say they already do ; if you look at the situation of the labour class in Africa or in China (and Asia in general), you quickly understand that slavery hasn't disapeared in the XXI century.

      The Aztecs were notorious for enslaving other tribes, one of the reasons why the other tribes sided with Cortez during the conquest of Mexico. Human history is filled with rape, mass killings, enslavement, and all that good shit. My initial point of my comment was that it just sucked until the modern era.

      ***** I just said to you that accusing white men of something that appeared in all cultures and all "races" as you americans say is pure stupidity. That's why I talked about human nature, which links all societies and civilisations.
      If you're black, your ancestors were taken into slavery by other black people and then sold like objects to europeans. Which indicates a lot about the culture and approach to human life on your people lands. But of course, you'll blame only white men, don't you ? Pretty logical and intelligent, congratulations. I suppose that since you're so upset about what happened to your ancestors, you want to go and live in Africa, where they came from, because mostly white men countries are historically disgusting you.

    "Fear is the mind killer."
    "Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
    Fear not, for I am with you always. Even unto the end of the world."
    Flint Sky's advice is not new or unique. Don't let your life be controlled by fear.
