    I find that the Valvoline maxlife seems to last a lot longer than other transmission fluids I've had my transmission fluid from Valvoline in my transmission on my 06 Town Car for about 30 thousand miles and it's absolutely phenomenal
    I actually called Valvoline up and I had a conversation with them and I said look what can I use this transmission fluid in and they said what can you not use that transmission fluid in
    Somehow they have that fluid engineered to work in almost every single vehicle on the road....it really is multi-vehicle and I don't know how they did it and then they give you like some kind of $2,000 guarantee if done by a dealership or something like that if anything should break because of their fluids
    because they know this stuff is serious

    I've changed the transmission fluid on my 99 Town Car, the 03 Grand Marquis, and my dad's 92 Town Car all with Supertech Mercon V.
    92 and 99 had an additional drain plug on the torque coverter (accessible behind the rubber cover, then turn the converter until the plug shows up). The 03 didn't have the plug. It lets you drain another 8 or so quarts of transmission fluid.
    The 92 has had torque converter shudder for a long time and the 99 developed it within a few months of ownership. Changing all the transmission fluid from pan and torque converter (and installing a new Motorcraft filter) fixed the issue in the 99, but the 92 still does it.
    Grand Marquis also developed a shudder before the 3-4 shift with the lockup engaged. I could only change 5 quarts with the pan drop only and this has improved the behavior.
    I wish the 03 had a torque converter plug. On the 92 and 99, the fluid out of the torque converter was very brown.
    Another method for draining the pan before dropping it is to open the transmission cooler line at the radiator, direct it into a bucket, and run the car until the flow becomes a trickle. I did this on the 03 Grand Marquis but again I only got 5 quarts out between this and the pan drop.

      Right on Aharon,
      Thanks for the great feedback.
      I forgot to mention the color characteristics of the V vs. the LV.
      When dealing with V, the color of the fluid may indicate it's dirty, or has been overheated.
      However when dealing with LV, it can turn black after only 15,000 miles and this can be normal.
      It's just the normal charcteristic of the fluid.
      I included a video link in the dexscription form FordTechMakuLoco showing this.
      Thanks for reminding me.

    I bought my 2010 Grand Marquis with 105k. I assumed the ATF was never changed so I flushed the old stuff out ASAP with Amsoil ATF. I opened up the cooler line and ran the car as I was pouring new stuff through the dipstick tube and watched the light brown fluid turn into a bright red. After that I dropped the pan and confirmed that the ATF and filter were never changed due to the fact that the dipstick plug from the factory was sitting in the pan. I changed the filter for a wix brand from amsoil and put everything back together. That was over a year ago and my car has 130k and the transmission still shifts like new and the fluid still looks brand new too!

    Good tip on drain plug. Dorman 65128 very similar, but has an "O" ring on mini-plug. I will try it on my latest Windstar. Got 412,000 miles out of my first one, and trans was still original and working perfectly when engine finally died. Did trans fluid every 50k miles. It was a great minivan.

    Hey Chuck, good timing I dropped the pan and changed transmission filter, and added five quarts of Mercon V (2000 Merc). Last year I bought a Doorman pan with a drain on it. I just drilled a hole in the old pan, and replaced it, was like 30 bucks from Rock Auto. Last year I found the yellow plug thing, that was c9ncering, but the magnet only had a bit of "dust" from last year to now. I am going to try Kendall Versa Trans ATF, made by philips-Conoco who makes Motorcraft oil. By the case it is a great price and is synthetic blend. I use the same hand pump you do, I use it to pump out the power steering and replace the fluids, which for the Merc is also Mercon-V. Thanks for the awesome videos, take care, and keep Pathering

      Yo Steve,

      I don't know.
      According to Ford the only time you need to flush transmission fluid is when you suspect fluid contamination, (wrong fluid type, rain water, etc.). Or maybe a component failure to flush out debris, or some other circumstance. Under normal conditions changing 4 quarts once a year is more than enough to keep the fluid healthy.

      Your 2008 Crown Vic calls for Mercon V based on my service literature.
      Mercon V is conventional.
      Mercon LV is synthetic.
      According to the Motorcraft product information sheet V and LV are not interchangeable, and should not be mixed. Use your best judgment.

    Hi Chuck, interesting video and informative oil prices are nuts they went up when the price of a barrel of oil shot up and never came back down way to stick it to the consumer. My 2000 Town car has the converter drain plug and I would never just drop the pan and change filter and 4 Qts of oil. My reasoning is would you change the oil on your motor but only drain out 2 quarts and put a filter on and add 3 qts of oil? Your contaminating the new with the old. Why the newer cars do not I have a drain plug on the converter, no idea seems like a poor design. I get that people want to save $$ but your already saving a lot of $$ doing it yourself why not spend a few $$ more and get the better quality part or oil. I see it all the time on some of the forums guys buying the cheapest china crap they can for their car when they do the work. Just my two cents on the whole diy maintenance.

      Thanks I should have done my own due diligence. I’ve done 2 filter and pan oil services with Mercon LV, the fist one at 150k and second 200k. I didn’t know about flushing. Surprising to me there was virtually no debris on magnet and filter at 150 but much more at 200. I’m getting hard downshifts but simultaneously I got a code for tire pressure sensor default and seemed to affect ECM performance (headlights were on during day for 24hrs) then seemed like relearning. So back to the original question which do you prefer Mercon LV or Valvoline LV? I want to rule out trans fluid with a complete flush before scanning for computer for errors. I appreciate your knowledge and comprehensive analysis in your presentations. Facts matter! 👊

      @@angrysheepdog9744
      “I didn’t know about flushing”
      No automobile manufacturer has any kind of recommendation for flushing transmission fluid as part of regular preventative maintenance.
      Usually flushing the system is only performed after catastrophic component damage, overhaul, or replacement, and contamination is suspected.
      “So back to the original question which do you prefer Mercon LV or Valvoline LV?”
      Prof. John D. Kelley will answer this question in these two videos;
      1.) History Of Ford Mercon ATF; th-cam.com/video/tUzhHVjr08w/w-d-xo.html
      2.) Valvoline MaxLife ATF; th-cam.com/video/e47oP5CPLCs/w-d-xo.html
      “I want to rule out trans fluid with a complete flush before scanning for computer for errors”
      Before performing scan tool diagnosis confirm & verify correct fluid level.
      90% of all transmission shift quality issues are incorrect maintenance, lack of maintenance, incorrect fluid, or incorrect fluid level.
      If your F-150 had the “standard” 4R75E this video would apply;
      th-cam.com/video/57ay6uMlbFo/w-d-xo.html
      Since you have the 6R80 here is what your Owner’s Manual says;
      Checking 6-speed automatic transmission fluid.
      The automatic transmission does not have a transmission fluid dipstick.
      Refer to your scheduled maintenance information for scheduled
      intervals for fluid checks and changes. Your transmission does not
      consume fluid.
      However, the fluid level should be checked if the transmission is not working properly, (i.e., if the transmission slips or shifts slowly) or if you notice some sign of fluid leakage. Transmission fluid should be checked by an authorized dealer. If
      required, fluid should be added by an authorized dealer.
      Do not use supplemental transmission fluid additives, treatments or
      cleaning agents. The use of these materials may affect transmission
      operation and result in damage to internal transmission components.
      After you confirm & verify correct fluid level, perform this reset procedure to wipe any learned transmission shift strategies;
      th-cam.com/video/9CxejeIbGYw/w-d-xo.html
      Drive the truck like you normally do for a couple days so the PCM / TCM can relearn your driving style, and then perform scan tool diagnosis.
      Hopefully you have a Bi-Directional scan tool so you can perform actuation tests on shift solenoids, torque converter clutch solenoids, etc.

So now if I do a drain and fill, drain some of the Motorcraft mercon lv and add the valvoline, will it cause any damage to my trans? Can it be mixed together?

      It's not a question of which is one better.
      It's a question of which one is correct, and which one is incorrect.

    Cool I finally got around to watching this video. Thanks so much for all the info and help with my question Chuck.
    That teflon tape hack is a good idea, I was worried about that drain plug leaking myself based on the Amazon reviews. Anyway, now I'm paranoid about whether my vic's previous owner might've used LV instead of V in my '08 lol, given that the shop in your case used that "universal" Valvoline.
    As for price, this looks like a pretty good deal: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JU877WQ
    But I have to wonder whether it's recycled or bootleg fluid based on some of the reviews and low price. Btw, the Costcos in my area swapped out the polish dog (I liked it more than the beef dog) for vegan options lol.

      Right on Mal,
      I've been meaning to make this video for some time. Thanks for the nudge.

    Hey Chuck, thanks for the great information, saves us other Panther owners hours of research. I also love that website, (fueleconomy.gov) use it all the time. P.S. working on a starter replacement video for the 02 Grand Marquis.
