Maverick is a very good film, but since the slow death of theaters which began several years ago, even a “very good” film feels legendary, relatively speaking.
I got the steelbook yesterday. I spent like 5 hours going from store to store looking for it. But they were all out of stock. I finally managed to find one at the 7th store I went to. It was also the last one on the shelf
I bought it on your review. I purchased the digital off iTunes previously but you convinced me to buy again. I do it from time to time. LG G2 77”, 5.1.4 sound system.
Waiting for this release reminds me of the good old days when every movie took months before you got a VHS release. It was a special day when you got to pick up your own copy. I felt that same feeling getting my 4k copy of this movie.
My dad saw the original with my uncle in a theatre filled with navy men cause there was a base nearby. Said it was one of his favorite theatre experiences. Fast forward 36 years later and I saw Maverick in theaters with him and yet again he said it was one of his favorite theatre experiences. Our only regret is not seeing it in IMAX cause holy crap, this movie was made to be seen on the big screen
I, too, missed experiencing it in IMAX, but was able to go EMAX (Emagine Theater's version -- a little smaller, but had Dolby Atmos!). I also agree, big screen was a must (I went 4x).

I pre-ordered the 4k double feature set of both movies. I got it yesterday. I'm so happy about the quality! I haven't watched the original movie 4k disc yet, but if it' anything like the effort they put into the Maverick, then I'm sure it won't disappoint.
picking it up later on today! so stoked to watch it again. saw it twice in an IMAX theater and it was the best experience i’ve had since lockdown ended.
As soon as I saw this movie in theatres, I pre-ordered the 4K. The one I ordered is an original Top Gun and Maverick 4K combo, hopefully it’ll show up soon! Stoked to hear that it’ll be worth the wait!
I loved this in IMAX so much! But I will have to say, I still considered The Batman was still my favorite IMAX experience haha. That batmobile scene is legendary!!
Great review! I'm usually blown away more by picture than the sound, but this was the rare instances where the sound was the major noticing point for me. Sure the picture is amazing but experiencing the opening scene withscore and even supporting sounds, the bass blew me away, I had just watched the original Top Gun so maybe that is why the comparison seemed fresh. Unfortunately I'm only 19 minutes in so far as I have short windows with work and family where I can watch movies with decent volumes, but I'm looking foward to continuing soon!
I saw this at the cinema and it blew me away. The while cinema shook during the flight scenes. I’ve also watched it about 20 times on digital, but I cannot wait to get my physical copy. Great review as always.
Grabbed the steel book yesterday from Best Buy. My store only had 3 steel book copies which they had to pull from the back, and only a dozen or so regular blu-ray and 4k's. When I asked an employee, she didn't even know what Top Gun or a steel book was. She looked at me like I was a geezer looking for an 8-track. We are defiantly not going to have physical media in stores much longer. Totally agree on the quality of the disc. Was blown away by the quality on my LG OLED and new Panasonic DP-UB820.
That’s sad. Best Buy of all places should know what a 4k Blu-ray is. They have huge Magnolia home theater setups in their stores, but then stop selling physical media? It’s ridiculous. I’m not spending thousands on my system to stream Netflix. lol
Got my copy yesterday....such a well put together sequel and think it even surpasses the original film and that's not an easy ride. All I need now is a decent Dolby Atmos system to go with my 75" Samsung OLED TV!
I saw it in 70mm IMAX. It was incredible and, to me, better than the original movie. The fact that there was very little CGI used and that the cast was riding in the backseat of F/A-18 Super Hornets pulling some serious G-forces and operating the six IMAX cameras mounted on the display panel is beyond impressive. l picked up the 4K release today and try to watch it in the next few days.
There is a ton of CGI in the movie, it's just very well done and mostly used as enhancement of the real thing. It looks so good because the artists had a good frame of reference. Check out C. W. Lemoine's channel, he interviewed one of the artists and they went through multiple scenes even he (being a real fighter jet pilot) thought are real.
CGI is in everything. The marketing strategy never said they did not use computer generated effects, just that the actors were in the planes. They didn't say the actors actually flew and controlled the planes, but just that they rode and acted in the air. Somehow, the commoners interpret that as "NO CGI! Actors flying the planes!"
Great review... if Tom Cruise can revive interest in the movie theater experience, he can do the same with physical media. This is the perfect title to showcase the format's capabilities regardless of thoughts on the film... so happy to hear it's lived up to the hype as you say.
Saw this in the cinema and on streaming. Everything you've said is accurate. 4k disc is amazing! The only other recent disc I'd put up there with it on audio and video quality alone is Ambulance.
Fun fact about the lenticular cover on the Walmart steelbook: it's a magnet! Which is really cool and makes total sense for alternate cover art for steelbooks. It is currently on my refrigerator.
The sound on this disc is so crisp and clean. The LFE goes really deep, it feels like you can crank the main volume an extra 5-10db than normal and it'll still sound clean.
Even the regular 2K Blu-ray looks and sounds fantastic when upconverted to 4K via the player. In brightly lit scenes, you can see every pore in everybody's face, especially the black dude who was the ground tech crew there at the end on the carrier. I was amazed at the detail on that shot.

Just watched the 4k disc a couple of days ago on my 4k TV, Atmos setup. This review is absolutely spot on. Absolutely phenomenal image and sound combined with a great film.
Incredible on 4K UHD - amazing. For me the video was 9.5/10, audio was an 8.5/10. The video was almost flawless, I would have given it a 10/10 but I did catch just a few seconds of softness in a couple scenes. It's probably 99.5% razor sharp though. I agree that the audio was very well balanced but I thought it was missing a touch of bass impact. From what I've seen the Atmos effects are almost 100% static with no real panning. I don't have Atmos currently so I can't really comment much on it, just from what I've seen from other reviews with software monitor height activity. I imagine that would be a bit of a negative. I just finished watching it this was one of THEEE best blurays I've ever seen its beautiful to stare at, hanz zimmer music is epic, and dolby atmos is godlike u feel like you're flying with these guys 12/10 absolutely amazing I got goosebumps well over 20x man oh man just wow...
Too bad you missed it in theaters, especially IMAX - The most stunning and entertaining movie I've seen in 20 years.
Didn't realize they shot it on a Sony VENICE, the same camera that Avatar 2 used. Looking forward to seeing how Avatar 2 looks.
I pre-ordered this 4K! But as soon as I found out about the huge steelbook that includes the original: plus a ton of extras (dog tags, lithographs…)
I got the double pack of top gun. I’m literally waiting to see the films until I can buy the Sony x700 ultra 4K player!
Just got mine Monday, but am traveling. Can't wait to see it at home after seeing it in the Dolby Cinema.
