Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "(They Long to Be) Close to You", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.

Originally a hit in the UK by British singer Julie Covington. It's from the musical Evita, about Eva Peron. However, Karen Carpenter does it justice with her version. Such a beautiful voice. And no she was not underrated.

"Don't Cry for Me Argentina" is a song recorded by Julie Covington for the 1976 concept album Evita, later included in the 1978 musical of the same name. The song was written and composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice while they were researching the life of Argentine leader Eva Perón. It appears at the opening of the first and second acts, as well as near the end of the show, initially as the spirit of the dead Eva exhorting the people of Argentina not to mourn her, during Eva's speech from the balcony of the Casa Rosada, and during her final broadcast.

This song was from the huge hit musical called Evita, based on the story of Eva Peron. Only a handful of singers can do it justice and Karen's version is at the top of the list. Elaine Paige (UK grand dame of musicals esp CATS) second, surprisingly Madonna 3rd. Karen was an extraordinary talent.

This is the very best cover of this song, ever. I mean, the emotion needed for this song can only be expressed by the very best singers. I can think of only one other singer who can do it justice - Agnetha from ABBA - although I think Karen is a step up even from her. Every time I hear her voice, I begin to well up thinking of how much more she could have given us had she lived.

Yes, she was underrated by many during her lifetime. First finding success in 1970 and throughout the decade, during the period of a lot of exploration and success in rock, they were largely written off as too "saccharine" and "bubblegum pop". It's only after her death and with the passage of time that she/they have gotten the respect she/they so richly deserved.

Thank you - I've never heard this version. No surprise I guess that she nails it. It's lovely. But people did respect her voice, just not the body of work you had to put up with or slog through to hear it.

  • @SWLinPHX

Daniel, if you’re checking out musicals may I suggest you pick one of two huge rock operas from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Both are my favorites and every song is amazing from each one. If you can choose the versions with the clips of the scenes from the movies that will be even better. The first one is “Jesus Christ Superstar” which is also Andrew Lloyd Webber and if you choose the 1973 movie directed by Norman Jewison you’ll see the video clips from each song. You can pretty much choose any song because they are classics. The most famous being the title track and “I don’t know how to love him”. The offer takes place during the last week of Jesus‘ life before Palm Sunday all the way through Easter. It’s quite entertaining, as far as Bible stories go, and you don’t have to be Christian to enjoy it..
The second is Hair, the rock opera about 1960s Vietnam era protests and hippies against that tumultuous backdrop in the US.
Go through the list of songs because they tell a story. Again I would choose excerpts from the 1979 Hair movie so that you can see the videos.
Both Hair and Jesus Christ superstar started out as concept albums in the late 1960s and then became stage plays/rock operas. They are unique in that they are operas meaning it’s all music and of course rock, instead of traditional theatrical music.
Andrew Lloyd Webber as a composer and his partner Tim Rice as a lyricist made some of the best musicals and operas ever, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, and many other legendary ones.

I don't know if you reacted to "Goodbye to Love" by Carpenters.
If not I strongly recommend that you do. The song is so sorrowful, so damn sad, it's almost an excercise in morbidity.
Though they throw in a line or two of "hope" it gets drowned by the despair. The song is beautiful and the most angelic voice of all time certainly does it justice.
It's well worth your time to listen to it; I'd love to hear your reaction.

This track is from the Carpenters' 1977 LP, "Passage." The complete track includes the lead-in, "On the Balcony of the Casa Rosada," featuring guest vocalists, with the entire track being backed by the Gregg Smith Singers along with the L.A. Philharmonic, which for contractual reasons was not credited under its name but appeared as the "Overbudget Philharmonic." At the time the Carpenters covered this song, the musical "Evita" had not yet been staged. (Its premiere in London was in 1978.) For another selection from "Passage," try the Carpenters' cover of Klaatu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft," which the duo released as a single in the fall of 1977. Their single became a modest hit at home (#32 on the Billboard Hot 100) and a much bigger hit outside the U.S. (#9 in the U.K. and Canada, and #1 in Ireland).

As for her being underrated, I think it was a function of the era they were in. I was a teenager at the dawn of "Sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll", and the IN groups personified that. They'd split up before Phantom. Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart for that one.

Oh how fleeting fame can be. A sing named Madonna did the film version of the musical. Some say that it was her best acting role, but who remember that now?
If you're looking for good songs from musicals of that era: Send In The Clowns, The Rose, and Don't Cry Out Loud. Okay, that last one was not in a musical, but for some reason I cannot think of the first two without thinking of that one. Liza Minnelli (the late songwriter Peter Allen's ex-wife) sings a different version of Don't Cry Out Loud - encouraging people to share their emotions; for obvious reasons.
As for Karen, Todd Haynes did a movie about her life called "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story". Due to lawsuits there is only a single legal copy of that film, but there are countless bootlegs out there.

Strongly reccommend the 1978 Broadway soundtrack of "Evita" with Patti Lupone as Evita and Mandy Patinkin as Che. Really really rilly good. (and much less sappy than this arrangement).

Underrated is kinda touchy with Karen. I think she's universally considered one of the most talented vocalists of all time, but I think by today's standards, and who you ask, her name isn't as used. As music changes, her name appears less on lists. I think she is one of the talents that has a distinction of being both revered and underrated. She's definitely considered one of the greatest, but isn't as cited as much as say, Whitney Houston. And to me they're like 1 and 2 respectfully, but I was also raised in the 80s/90s in a household of people raised in the 60s/70s so I have a very broad scope and appreciation when it comes to music/talent. She's a legendary talent, but not as regarded as she should be.

You should definitely check out Madonna's version. It's not necessarily the best, but it's a beautifully produced movie, and she looks like Eva Peron (Madonna had dental work to close the gap in her teeth for the movie, then had it reversed afterward).
Evita was the first musical I became obsessed with when I saw the Broadway cast's performance on the Tony awards in 1980.

My fave version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice classic. Ironically, Eva Peron was 33 when she died of cancer, and Karen was, I believe 32 when she died of Anorexia.

This is a wonderful rendition of the song, but you MUST see the entire musical. Madonna was actually quite good in the movie, both as a singer and an actress. I encourage you to rent or buy the movie and enjoy!

Karen Carpenter... What an achingly beautiful voice. She would have been a natural for musical theatre, as this piece clearly shows. Another singer you should check out is Patsy Cline. Here's her song, "Walkin' After Midnight." It's from the soundtrack of the 1985 movie based on her life story, with new music behind her courtesy of her producer, Owen Bradley: th-cam.com/video/Z1_Fk9SfkiY/w-d-xo.html.

Karen is not underrated. We just can't use enough superlatives to do her musical impact justice every time you hear her voice and her brothers arrangements. He was just as brilliant as Karen.

Karen gives a very lovely and ethereal performance of this song.
However, the definitive, fiery and passionate performance of this song is by Patti Lupone who played the title role in the original cast of the Broadway musical "Evita," music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, about the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón.
