Tarikh Episode 383
Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil narrates the story of battle of gauges in Indian Railways history. Indian Railways today operates on 5 ft 6 in broad gauge. Most of the metre gauge and narrow gauge railways have been converted to broad gauge. Small stretches of the network that remain on meter and narrow gauges are also being converted to broad gauge. Rapid transit lines are mostly on standard gauge, although some initial lines use 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge. The first train in 1853 in India ran on a broad gauge track. Later during Lord mayo’s tenure India adopted the metre gauge. Later several princely states started adopting narrow gauge and what was called as toy gauge. In India, the initial freight railway lines were built using standard gauge. In the 1850s, the Great Indian Peninsula Railway adopted the gauge of 5 ft 6 in for the first passenger railway in India between Bori Bunder and Thane. This was then adopted as the standard for the nationwide network.

Entire Mumbai must have metro connectivity say goodbye to local trains and give some relief to railway stations... railway stations must be only for long journeys 🇮🇳🇮🇳🙏.
Good suggestion. Tho Mumbai's population is too huge for Metros alone to take the load. Most current metros have been constructed on pillars on roads & that has totally messed the roads making them narrow & has increased traffic congestion & chaos . An alternative to this kind of Metro construction needs to be thought of
Mumbai's foundation is fragile, as development will cause lot of tension for large building and population densities is also another issue, if metro construction begins, it will take around 3-4 years if worked timly, but it will be impossible due chaos and rush of population. Transportation is messed up in Mumbai. Only way build Mumbai metro is on the main road. If they could have build metro system earlier in 90s, today metro will be like Chicago or Nyc metro.

Oriiginating in a Popular Mechanics article of 1905, this fake news has many loopholes, which multiple historians have highlighted repeatedly.
1. WHen romans ruled Europe, chariots had already given way to other modes of transport. There are plenty of academic papers written on the use of streets in Roman cities, and none of them mention chariots. Vehicle traffic consisted of hand-drawn two-wheeled carts; two and four-wheeled wagons pulled by one or two horses, donkeys, or oxen; and even sledges on runners.
2. UK railway track gauge were actually based on width of earlier tramways used to haul coal. Although tramway width varied widely among regions, those in the coal district in the north of England, where George Stephenson began his work, used a gauge of four-foot-eight. He originally started at the same measure but during construction, he added in an extra half inch to allow for a little more leeway between rails and wheel flanges
Some other historians suggest that the rails were originally laid 5 feet apart on top of wagon wheel ruts, but because the early edge rails were 1.75 inches across the top and early trains ran on the inside edges, Mr. Stephenson had to subtract 3-1/2 inches for the railroad car wheel spacing making them 4 feet 8-1/2 inches.
