as much as the material cost, it would be a better practice to rough the long end down, swap the part , rough the 2nd down.some metals have a tendency to warp when large amounts of stock are removed. finishing one end of a part before the 2nd side is roughed and finalized will most certainly result in a part with unacceptable runout.
It is amazing that this gigantic lathe is exactly like those small hobby lathes, just much bigger.
