Sven - “welp here I go covering the 150+ years of the the 3rd succession war”
Catalyst Team - “you mad man even we haven’t had the balls to produce a 3rd succession wars book yet, covering the entire thing.”
Having written the scripts now, I understand why. I thought at the beginning I'd be able to summarise the Housebooks in a couple weeks and then go delving through all the minor sources looking for the odd lore snippet, but after two months of writing, I couldn't wait to be done with it.
@@SvenVanDerPlank
Yeah knowing just how much info can go into the 3rd I was really wondering how you’d actually be able to do it - but a dozen or so vids just covering each nation every 25 or so years makes sense.
Plus you only wonder how bad it’ll be for in universe historians having to cover all this in the history books lol.
Hello everyone. Hope you are all doing well. This episode marks the beginning of the Third Succession War series. I'm still not quite certain how long it's going to be as I keep going back to the scripts to change around the dividers.
Relatively short chapter to begin things and that's going to be the case for the next half dozen videos. The plan is to get one out every week, with the second episode already up on my Patreon. I meant to upload this yesterday but I legit lost track of the days after staying up all night to watch the election results and then sleeping through Friday. It will be on Saturday again going forwards.
Thanks for all your support and patience while I took some time away from the channel in May/June. Hope it proves worth the wait.
I was just looking for this last week. So glad to see it.😊
Hey bro, we all need some breathing room from time to time. Don't worry too much. We are all grateful for the outstanding videos. There is no other channel that is as good as you for the Battletech universe. Grim Dark Narrator is really good, but he doesn't come close to the detail you put in. I have said it before, and I'll keep on saying it. Thanks for making it so much easier to teach and get people interested in Battletech.
Doesn't need to be too long. After all, the Third Succession War was a short and spectacular affair right? Right?
@@fix0the0spade Succinct it was not 😂
The beginning of the Third Succession War, the longest conflict in the history of the Inner Sphere.
I try not to think about the fact that the past 18 hours of video in this series has been on just 100 years of history. Mercifully, I don't think the Third Succession War will take quite that long.
@@SvenVanDerPlank We shall see...
"...Yeah, but they would never be foolish enough to have a Third Succession War...right?"
-Former SLDF Officer somewhere in the Kerensky Cluster, probably
"Alright fine, you can have a Third Succession War. But that's the last time!"
@@SvenVanDerPlank "Ugh! That's not fair-all the other table top franchises get to stay up all night having violent civil wars! I hate you!"
@@SvenVanDerPlank Hanse Davion: *Smirks*
@@SvenVanDerPlankLook, I am just saying... Maaaaaybe we should send someone to check up on them when it all cools down.
See if they are still... You know... Alive.
@watchm4ker That sounds like a Warden trick to me.
You've already had Succession War.
We've had two, yes. What about 3rd Succession War?
Sven: I don't think he knows about 3rd Succession War.
"They'll never see it coming *this time,"* said the entire Inner Sphere to itself.
"Doing precisely what we've done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll be expecting us to do this time."
I have never played this or read anything but have watched all your videos for it a few times at work the last week straight. You definitely need more subs for the work put in
Thank you. Always pleased to hear that new people are discovering the franchise through my videos. Glad you enjoyed them.
Look up some of the games, and welcome to the fandom.
Mechs at the end of the 3rd war that started in the first: "I'm tired, boss."
Suck it up, buttercup. Some of the periphery 'Mechs have been going since the Age of War.
I was genuinely surprised when Sven said the Dragon was the closest thing to a winner. You generally don't think of that kind of balls-out aggression paying off for a nation-state long-term.
Yeah, "winner" is couched in various provisos. Of the losers, they've done the least badly. They did the best of anyone if you ignore all the ways they didn't.
@@SvenVanDerPlankwell still better then some of the others (Capellans cry in the corner)
@@SvenVanDerPlank Coordinator: "I won the planets but lost the navy!"
Mechwarriors: "We didn't need those losers anyway!"
@SvenVanDerPlank it's like thermonuclear warfare: you can't win, you can only lose the least.
And so it all begins again...
I imagine this is going to be a longer one overall, just for shear time passed over the 3rd and the sort of "recap episode" in the middle you were talking about might be a useful thing.
Always appreciate the gargantuan amount of research that must be going into these.
I'm still not quite sure how long this series is going to be. The first two chapters I thought would be closer to 20 minutes based off the word count, but they came in between 13-16. It might reach the same kind of length as the 1stSW & 2ndSW, but we'll see.
I don't mind it at all if you take your time and do it right. Even if it means we wait longer, the quality and depth of these videos is amazing.
It has begun, for a third time. I love Battletech.
Millions are about to die and all I can think of is "yesss, let's go!" to more Succession War history.
Surprisingly few people die in the 3rdSW. Nature of war changes quite significantly. I read a line in a sourcebook recently that said the 4thSW (just two years) had a death toll (think it was 1.5 million) of more than half of the 3rdSW which went on for almost 160 years.
yess, new succession war vids. My cappie heart fears this war tho
As a Capellan, you should have learned to fear everything by now.
@@SvenVanDerPlank third war is the charm, im sure those fedrats will learn to fear the armored Fist of Liao this time :D
@@demonicjapselwhohohohoh! 4th succession war!
Yes it does citizen.
So excited for this part. The game started during the 3rd Succession Wars. It is still my favorite era.
I'd think itd be great if you started doing a "story retrospective" with the games now youve started entering their time periods.
I've never been too fond of how BT canon treats the games. I do definitely want to give them some focus, but I've only ever played a couple myself. You'll definitely see some references make it into the scripts, but whether they'll have a dedicated video, I'm not sure.
@@SvenVanDerPlankyou do make *excellent* use of the OST songs from the games though.
YES! The Third War! You know what, I haven't even started the video, this one gets a 5 out of 5!
"You've already had a succession war."
"We've had two yes, but what about a third succession war?"
"I don't think he knows about the third succession war."
First - man I love these videos. Do you think you will eventually make it into the Il Clan era or whatever the modern era is by the time that you get there? Or is there a point at which you think you might stop? If so, is it because of a nostalgia/appreciation for a specific era vs less interest in another? If you do catch up with modern era, what kinds of videos will you make then? Or will you slow down/do something else?
I first got the idea for this series reading through the 4th Succession War Atlas, but I quickly realised that what I actually wanted to do was tell the story of the little discussed Jihad and Dark Age to help bridge the gap between the 3025-3067 setting people are familiar with up to the modern ilClan setting (which I know nothing about). Quite by accident, I the series developed into a deep dive into the ancient history of the setting and we've been going through those first thousand years ever since.
So it is certainly my intention to go as far as I can along the timeline, but I've always known that at some point I'll look for some milestone in the story to leave it at. Right now I certainly won't feel satisfied walking away when there is still so much history to tell, but there's no way to know if or when I might have a change of heart. My goal is to reach the ilClan, but that is still multiple years away.
On the whole jumping back in time for each future video, you could start them with a "Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Inner Sphere..."
@@JW-Barends My question is when are we getting a "Meanwhile on the bridge of the McKenna's Pride"?
Eventually. It was always my intention to cover Inner Sphere history first and then go back to cover the Exodus after the initial Clan Invasion. I'd rather discuss them as an unknown when they first appear and fill in the blanks later.
Aamazing job! These videos have pulled me deep into the complex Battletech world :) thank you
You're welcome. Happy to hear you're enjoying them.
I’m so used to listening to these as I do something else that when this auto started I didn’t recognize it was new. Lol. Woot new lore summary!
I love your videos! They're such a great way to get into the lore, for fans both new and old. Keep it up :)
Thanks, will do.
Here we go. Here we go. The big one, the war with no end.
Awesome. Looking forward to the new series on the next war.
Yes! 3SW content!
Oh!
So unexpected,
But SO welcome!
Fantastic to see you getting into this.
Continue to love your work and appreciate everything you do.
Cheers. Hasn't been the most fun working on this particular conflict, but I am excited to get to the 3000s and into the modern era.
@@SvenVanDerPlank as a historian, and one who has written on elite unit actions, the trick is to look for the occasional interesting story which reflects the overall arc of the conflict
Those little focus points give a narrative "grip" to pull you through the low intensity action
And that's pretty similar to your overall approach anyway
The real issue, of course, being that this is actually the least densely covered period in the setting
Missed your premier!!! Painting minis hasn’t been the same without your voice. Glad to see a new one. Any new megacuts coming out soon? I paint houses for a living so those eight hour episodes definitely help to make a day go by quickly! Also on a personal note… love your collaborations with Tex of the black pants legion. Would love to hear more of you two as a duo. I think it would go well. Thank you for all the awesome you do! Make mine Van der Plank!
Glad to see you back Sven! I can't believe I missed this video, but I was at a buddy's having a cookout.
Hope you're having a great day today!
Once more into the breach, dear rivals!
Surely this time will be worth something!
Imagine having this on a big screen. Movie night goals!
Good morning and Thank you
Been wondering how you'd handle the longer, but sparsely described 3rd war. Looking forward to it.
A pleasant surprise to see this video.
Worked all night. Finally I can sl….the Third Succession War!
Sleep can wait. ::clicks play::
How could anyone sleep without first knowing which of the two Kuritan siblings is going to win the throne?
@@SvenVanDerPlank looking forward to what you will cover going through the next century in a half of what is mostly raids and low scale brushfire conflicts. Things get so bad planets get raided for water and other diminishing natural resources on other worlds.. never mind the all but demolished tech and industrial base on most worlds.
Until one day on a planet named Helm, salvation came.
But that is still very far away.
I love these stories. Thanks very much
You're welcome.
Great stuff, kick it off and do what you need to do. Thus far you've not disappointed.
The Deagon strikes 😎.
Thank you for your effort and for teaching us more. I love the videos, and will be waiting for more eagerly
Cheers, hope you enjoy the rest of the series when it comes.
here we go! I've got some opinions on the 3rd succession war and how it tends to be discussed, but I'm going to hold off on them for now because it wouldn't be the first time that you videos changed my mind about something.
Let's see how it goes. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts as we go.
I’m looking forward to the next episode.
Nice work Sven. Look forward to more.
I've been waiting for this series to kick off!! Thanks for all your hard work Sven.
This isn't what they meant by "third time's a charm," is it? On a more serious note, it's honestly wild to see how far this playlist has gone...so many unknowns of the storyline has come to light thanks to your efforts and it all has made me really take a step back and really appreciate how it all started and how it might come to an end. The Inner Sphere map itself is so truly unrecognizable from that old colorless map you started with back in the day, both in your videos and in universe. It's also ironic that you hardly, if at all at times, ever make mention of BattleMech's themselves beyond simply saying when units of them get thrown into the fray. It's makes the setting, to me at least, way more interesting given so much of the games revolve entirely around the damned things and yet so much of the universe they take place in don't. Makes the big old bastards seem awfully small in the grand scheme of things, doesn't it?
Oh I have been looking forward to this!
The long war begins. Looking forward to seeing a few notable characters pop up.
Holy hell, you are actually doing it. This was great man, looking forward to more!
Was there ever any doubt?
Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this video! I really appreciate it and I wish you good luck with your future videos as you figure out a format for the Third Succession Wars!
Always nice to see the dracs just being the absolute worst.
Cheers. I think I have the structure sorted now, but every few days I decide to rewrite something, so we'll see.
@@SvenVanDerPlank good luck and thank you for all the work! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Sounds like a good plan
I look forward to the story of the early Davion action!
A summary or two (maybe one for each 50ish years?) sounds like a great plan
Thanks for doing these!
So, it begins.... *starts screaming in terror*
Totally looking forward to this series!
Excellent work Sven! This is fantastic as always. I am happy you are covering this murky era of Battletech. I also want you to know that I have switched from my traditional Whiskey/ Bourbon to Gin and tonic featuring Tanqueray. 😎
Well cheers to that. Thanks for your longtime support, ebla.

Third time's the charm. Surely we'll get a winner this time and the Inner Sphere will be united.
Hello been a Battle Tech fan and player since it was a board game and has evolved into computer games over the years past and I cannot wait until the Clan wars begin friend soi far you are doing well, I have been a a clan member of the Ghost Bear clan for many years .... Yeah Freebirth!
Here we go guys... Finally past the background lore preamble and into the game proper.. it only took 18 hours..
Not quite. Still another 160 years to go. The Third Succession War was just ending when the setting "begins" in 3025, but it is at least recent history for them.
Literally started watching the 2nd Suc war super cut today cause i needed my hyper detailed battletech lore fix and part 1 one of Suc war 3 drops. Fuck yeah
Well done. I didn't expect it so soon, but it's fitting considering how fast things go downhill, again.
And of course, Kurita causes trouble again, ironically with themselves first this time. All out of what was likely more miscommunication (or just none at all) and paranoia rather than ill intent.
And all that was achieved was the ruination of Zabu's legacy and their own internal security force.
Of course, this won't set them back at all, because of the Combine's ridiculous plot armor.
Warning : Here be ranting and rambling.
7:08 - While he ultimately turned out to be right, this seems like a repeat of old mistakes. At least get Robinson back.
8:15 - How did he get back from Hesperus if he was leading the ground attack? I suppose it doesn't matter, but it seems like a potential story was missed. Likewise, his high influence seems odd, considering, you know...he *lost*. Sure, it wasn't necessarily his fault, but when has that ever stopped the need for a scapegoat?
11:04 - 11:16 The supposedly rebellious, resistant Rasalhague District has been awfully quiet during the era of the Star League and throughout the Succession Wars, at least as far as what information I've found indicates. Odd, that.
And leave it to the Combine to think that cross border trading (and a potential peace) is a reason to start warring again. I'm surprised they didn't start out by executing the traders first.
11:52 - What. Barring some Comstar shenanigans, this is just stupidity. They're next to the nation that started this mess and refused any peace agreement, but their leader is considered a potential warmonger? Despite not even having done anything particularly malicious or stupid so far?
12:15 - 12:52 - Here we go again. _Long sigh._
And so it begins again. Great work Sven.
excellent as always. ty sven
So it begins! Most revered time period of BattleTech! Thanks for doing it! Are you going use the Technical Readout books? Original ones had battle history that capture moments which were part history of the Third Succession War.
I just sent you a message on Discord. I'm aware of the TROs, but since we don't have a complete picture, I'm trying to keep the early 3rdSW more focused on the narrative than just listing as many battles as possible.
Great work!
Thanks
Let's fucking gooo
What's interesting abut this as a history buff is that I can't think of a real-world paralel example from out own world. A war that happens almost immediately among multiple countries after several other knock-down, drag-out wars have already been fought. Maybe the Napoleonic Wars of the various Coalitions? (but it doesn't quite match up)
What an epic intro video.
Even in the future when we nuclear powered walking battle mechs, it always comes down to some dudes with swords in a hallway duel.
Traditions are important.
Hey Sven ^_^. Thanks for the the effort, your videos are amazing. You mentioned you'd use a visual to help us keep track of where/when in 3rd Succession War we are. Maybe a timeline that shows major points as you do a recap when jumping to a new region of The Sphere?
I am planning to do exactly that. Along the timeline will be boxes representing the previous videos in the series so you can keep track of when each new chapter takes place in relation to everything that came before.
Oh boy, I sure hope third time's the charm and the great powers will be able to finally settle their differences for the good of all!
In a way, they sort of do settle their differences. Or at least two separate camps make peace among themselves.
Two words: Border skirmishes.
There. I just saved you months of work
Well that about summarises the fighting, but there's still plenty of political shenanigans going on at home we can look into.
We're here boys, time for the main Stretch.
Let's see how quickly we can get through it. Hopefully we can keep a good pace like the 2ndSW.
HELL YEAH, LET'S GOOOOOOOO
It has begun.
Ah snap. Great timing.
It might still be a ways off yet but are you planning to do a series on the SLDF exodus fleet/formation of the clans?
Your work is incredible.
Thank you. Yes I am planning to do one, but only after the initial Clan Invasion begins. I'll go back either after the ilKhan dies or after Tukayyid.
instaclick, like and comment for teh algorithm gods. keep it up Sven
Let’s gooooooooo!
I see Kurita, you know what I'm about
Thanks
Wow, this war was long.
Thankyou thankyou and thankyou
IT BEGINS
Cheers
This is gonna be good! (Bad for the Inner Sphere)
whooo boy
In the words of Tex of the Black Pants Legion:
"Fucking Kurita."
A 30 year recovery feels overly generous.
Edit: And I'd hardly Cal Rowina's position a house of cards. She was winning the hearts and minds of the common people, she had strong backing from a substantial portion of the intelligence services, and had seized control over vital logistics.
Fair enough. Going up against the Coordinator so directly was always going to be precarious though.
And if ComStar wants believes they have some sort of divine mandate in starting another war, then they'll give whatever number they feel justifies it to themselves.
@@SvenVanDerPlank True and true. Though if Comstar wasn't as fanatical or off spirit of the goal, they could potentially turn a 30+ year ceasefire into an opportunity to promote peace by spreading propaganda highlighting the atrocities of the last two succession wars. All the planets turned to wastes, Kentares, the final broadcasts of worlds scoured by WMD's...
But that wouldn't be Comstar, and might start too much Peacetech.
Just Fourth Succession War foreplay.
OK. Here. We. Go! Man, these people just don't learn, do they?
As bad as the clans are, you know what? I get it.
Looking forward to the new series, but man can these get depressing.
I think we're through the worst of it now. Humanity may still be carrying the scars, but they're crawling out of their lowest point now we've entered the 3rdSW, though it'll take more than a century to get back to where they were.
Also, which mix is playing in this one? I cant find it in his Ambience playlist.
Comment for the algorithm
Woohoooo
And of course it’s Kurita who starts it. Kinda boring but self inflicted I suppose.
Well I am definitely curious how comstar gets everyone else into this mess again
ComStar surprisingly doesn't have to do much of anything this time around. Pushing the DCMS to take action creates a chain reaction which draws everyone in almost immediately.
@@SvenVanDerPlank ok that’s a surprise. still would have been more interesting if another house would have been the one to start it but oh well. That’s what Kurita gets for being Kurita (seriously calling your head of state Coordinator of WORLDS is like the biggest "I will not stop until I conquer all” title). Well I anticipate already the first look into Liao and what they are up to. I guess crying in the corner
@Raphley Yeah, pretty much. Liao is the focus of Chapter III. If you're looking for a non-Kurita instigated war, you'll have to wait until the 4thSW.
