The overaeching theme of this album is the rise and fall of empires, and the cyclical nature of societal eras and life in general. The ending bit of this song is actually a reprise of the introductory song, Imperium, which is supposed to be an "anthem" of sorts.
Jack the Ripper is used as ametaphor very interestingly as well! Because he was never caught, people feared his return even years after the murders ended; that combined with the album's theme is a nice motiff

Spitalfields is the area in London where Jack The Ripper committed his crimes. When he stopped the people living there called it Respite on the spitalfields because no one knew if he was coming back or not. The song is co written by Joakim Berg. One of the best songwriters in Sweden and a big star here with his own band Kent. This is a fantastic song that sometimes brings me to tears. It is something about it that i can't explain. Hopefully someday Tobias will play it live. P.s don't miss out on the Whitesnake part at the end. And as someone else wrote, listen to the start of the album and you will realise just how smart Tobias is for ending an album of the rise and fall of empires just like it started. Meaning that one era is over and a new one begins. If you want to continue on the Ghost train i highly recommend Kaisarion next. That also has a story of its own. D.s

Album ends as it begins. If you listened to it from the beginning... if you want, start there. Imperium (the intro) which goes into Kaisarion and will bookend this song.

Excellent reaction. If you do react to Kaisarion, it may be for the best to listen to it with the intro song Imperium since you just did the end of the album and those two songs make up the beginning. Anyways I hope you enjoy any future Ghost songs you may listen to.

What's crazy is that this album is so full of just amazing stadium-filling anthems that he hasn't even had to bust this one out yet for either US Tour leg this year. They're promising another tour next year where I imagine they'll expand to cover the B-side of Impera....which is crazy to think that they have killers like this in the pipeline they haven't even had to use live yet.

This song draws a lot from the 80's (as does a lot of Impera). The intro and bridge are both inspired by Whitesnake's Is this Love, and Still of the Night. And Van Halen's Right Here Right Now before the outro. Ghost are brilliant songwriters, and know all the best bits to mine. The fade out echos the intro to the album - so its circular.

Tobias has stated before in interviews, that he has been influenced in his music by a band called "Uriah Heep", whose heyday was mainly in the 70s. (Awesome band, by the way, you check them out sometime). Especially the "Look at Yourself"..."Demons and Wizards"...and "The Magician's Birthday" albums.

This is the last song on the album and the end is the same tune as the first opening track which is meant to show the rise and fall of empires it’s a great bookend even though you want it to build into something more it’s fitting in context of the album what a song!!!

I would have liked a sound effect during the fade out. The sound of the coach wheels and the horses hoofs as the coach fades on down the 19th century road

The thing is second part of the song is also about fall of the empire, end of one and new begging of another (aka same instrumental part as Imperium witch is interlude to the album, representing the theme of circular nature of things)

I'm a bit late commenting on this... This song is the end of the album 'Impera'. The outro guitar motif reflects the beginning of the album, a track called Dominion, which leads into Kaisarion. It bookends the album beautifully.

There's a beautiful multiplicity to these lyrics - not only can they be interpreted on the layers of Jack the Ripper in context of the song and of falling empires in the context of the whole album, they can also be interpreted from the side of the victim of either and... of the opressor's successor. There's relief that they're gone, but there's also a perverse nostalgia in kind of missing their allure. There's disillusionment and there's fascination and paradoxical obsession to follow in their footsteps. Honestly, these are very powerful lyrics.

I honestly kind of wonder how the cover of 'We don't need another hero' follows in Ghost's lore here. 'Respite' feels like a submission to the cyclical nature of rise and fall of an authority figure who fails to be all that and turns out to be mundane (the Wizard of Oz reference in Respite) and to just break the cycle altogether and just live your life ('all we want is life beyond the Thunderdome') - I genuinely wonder whether this is Cardi C's/Papa IV's beginning of rebellion against the Clergy.

Just one more thing before you go on to a new Ghost song. There is no they. No band. It's just Tobias Forge. From the beginning he did almost all by himself but nowadays he takes in people he likes to give him inspiration. He said that he is afraid to get stuck and write the same song over and over but with someone coming in it gives him the challenge to do better. The idea and the music thou always comes from Tobias and he always has the final say. On Impera he also for the first time used a guitarist. Fredrik Åkesson from Opeth who plays all guitar. They are close friends. He also used a drummer and a piano player. The studio musicians doesn't play live in the concerts. He has different musicians for that. This one as i said earlier is co written by Joakim Berg. Hunter's Moon is co written by Max Grahn. A Oscar nominated composer. (Husavik, the theme song for Will Ferrell movie Eurovision) If you choose Imperium and Kaisarion the first one is written by Tobias only and Kaisarion is also written together with Joakim Berg.

What you say is true, but the Nameless Ghouls do play their hearts out at live events and contribute to making it such a killer stage show. Tobias may write it all, but they have to go out and perform and win the crowd. Love me some Nameless Ghouls! :)

@@DangerKennyB Yes. That is true. They do a fantastic job. And without them there is no show. Tobias can actually play every instrument but it would be rather hard for him to do so and sing at the same time 😁. That also goes for all the people involved in the studio and everything around him. It's Tobias vision but he needs certain people to make it happen.

Depends which album you're talking about. Tobias never played drums on any record. He doesn't play bass on Meliora. Not all guitars either.

@@johanzander5919 A good point, a hefty chunk of the lead guitar work on Impera is by Opeth's Fredrik Åkesson

Interesting fact: Jack the Ripper's victims were not prostitutes, except for one, four belonged to the working class - they were maids and laundresses.
