The reason for the cost is that price protectionism actually started in the outdoor industry. In my youth (22) I ordered a pair of Fire (pronouned Fee-Ray) climbing boots from a store in the California desert. What I got back was a lesser brand climbing shoe and a legal decision paper on why I didn't get the brand I order. The importer of this shoe was the late free soloist John Bachar of Yosemite fame. He took the mail order store to court and won an injunction that stipulated that a supplier could set a minimum price for their goods. This same judicial ruling now protects Gucci, Prada, Coach and basically all luxury goods. By the way plenty of outdoor brands use it too! I often tell my tale to REI employees to make sure they know that their industry isn't that laid back like they think. This is a big reason for REI's prices!

You ordered fires and didn't get them ?
You got the shaft , that's not standard and I've never heard of substituting like you have said . I sold fires through mail order , one of the first to do so , we even brought them on climbing trips , a couple hundred pair per trip selling them incognito in Yosemite etc to climbers getting the brand out there and I guarantee substitution could never even be a thought , it's absurd .
Where did you purchase them I'm curious .
Btw ...... Climbing shoes not climbing boots ......

REI sells at the same price as smart wool and all other brands. Your statement is completely false. This industry has standardized pricing. The same price for Patagonia at REI and from REI. They also match the Patagonia direct to consumer sales. But thanks pointing out all the benefits. Really bad start to the video.

Not standardized at all. Price protected like Gucci etc since 1986! I got burned by this all those years ago!
