Historical notes: You may notice some of the other P-51s in this video are played by A-36s. This is due to a limitation with my flight simulator. Also, for the same reason, the Malcom hood is not present in this recreation. Also, Santiago Gutierrez was the only wingman Bud lost on a combat mission, but he did lose one other in training. Other than that, this one should be pretty spot on! Thanks everyone!
Im pretty sure Ive said this before, but I can't praise you enough for the work you do. Almost DAILY we are losing our WW2 veterans. That fact that you're going out there actively seeking these men out in order to tell their stories and preserve it through your videos is an amazing way to honor this American HEROES. Please keep up the OUTSTANDING work your doing.😊😊😊😊
I met his son recently on a river cruise. Nice guy, he had graduated from the Air Force Academy and flew F4’s for 20 years. Then joined Southwest Air Lines and flew 737’s for twenty years. But what I remember most, was his ability to have a glass of Bourbon. Without any problems. 😊
Thank you for this amazing lesson in history! I was born in 1964. I had two uncles that were WW2 vets. Unfortunately they are no longer here. When I was growing up there were a lot of WWII vets. It is sad that they are all dying off. This video keeps history alive. Thank you!!
My bad, I thought that I heard 1945 instead of 1944 when I made my initial comment about the crippled B-17F model, the B-17G models didn't begin to have a real presence until May or June of 1944, so I apologize to TJ, and anyone else who read my previous, erroneous comment, that I've now deleted. TJ has been doing a fantastic job of both researching & telling these WWII air combat stories that I'm sure that we all hope to keep seeing in the future. I haven't been able to afford to play any of IL-2's newer, mainly online simulations due to financial hardships, but I still play all of the older versions that allow me to play against the sim itself, along with several other older, favorite WWII combat air sims like SDOE & EAW. I even managed to rebuild an older computer & slowly upgrading all of the hardware, along with a friend donating his time, computer skills & parts in refurbishing my motherboard & installing a blistering new CPU setup, along with greatly enhanced memory, which allows me to play in full realism mode constantly. As soon as the money is available for me to do it, I plan on donating money to help advance TJ's efforts in giving us all of the excellent videos that he makes!!
Excellent production including graphics, research, narration and especially participation with that great American WW II hero Bud Anderson, TJ!! Jim C.
Thank you so much for these fantastic documentary/histories. What a great tribute to the men who flew these important missions, defending against tyranny. This series on Bud Anderson has been especially top notch and compelling. Great to see the great man himself providing his own voice and memories. Looking forward to part 3!
I met Bud Anderson at the Reno Air Races two years ago. I bought one of his signed posters and got to shake his hand. It was a great day for me to meet such a legend!
Awesome video of the war Hero Bud Anderson. He is one of the few mustang pilots who are still living. I have watched all of his videos many times.I fly radio control planes and I have a mustang just like his in his honor. I can't wait for the next video. 😊
T E R R I F I C quality on these videos, TJ3. Excellent editing, graphics and/or interviews. Exemplary, nice job indeed, i.e., major kudos! Solid, 5 Star satisfaction for veterans, pilots and aviation aficionados as well. PS: Forgive me for not being able to subscribe at this time. No excuses (especially to support your valuable work and tributes), 'but' battling myself with ocular and liver cancer.
I am quite proud of my 3 short conversations with now Brig. Gen. Bud Anderson. What a delight to see him grin and drink my beer. He preferred the C model to the D as it was lighter and faster. Fewer guns didn't matter if you could shoot straight according to him.
43-6723 (in the video) wasn't lost with Carter Jones, it was Al Boyle on Feb 21, 1944. Anderson had 43-12315 until March 22, when it went down with Jones. Never seen a picture of 43-12315 at all. Might or might not have had OLD CROW on it. 6723 had OLD CROW and the mission marks in yellow...
The Germans were forced to heavily arm the Me-109s with extra large cannon to take down the B17s. This made these 109s far less maneuverable then they normally would be. In fact the Germans made up "light 109s" with much less heavy guns and separate " Heavy 109s" squadrons to try to correct this. The inky trouble was often because of superior allied number if aircraft the Heavy 109s ended up fighting the lighter more manauverable American Mustangs and P47 anyway.
The yellow band around the rear fuselage of German airplanes (3:57) was a marking for the Eastern Front. So it would not have been on any of the airplanes that Bud Anderson fought.
I remember my uncle a Spitfire pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force telling me that late in the day on D Day his squadron group repositioned to the Normandy beach. On D Day+ 1 of 26 German aircraft shot down in the Normandy area 24 of them were shot down by his group. Apparently the Spitfire Mk XIV with the Rolls Royce Griffin engine was a nightmare for the Germans.
Let's not ignore the superb English ace pilots such as Ronnie Agdgwongo, Augustus Kwimbe and Abdul Rachman Aziz, etc. Without them England would be speaking German today.
Why does Bud always get the glory? Leonard K. "Kit" Carson was the highest scoring ace of the 357th. His book "Pursue & Destroy" is the ultimate reference on design, development, deployment and tactics of the P-51 Mustang.Good luck finding one.
I actually own a signed copy of Bud's book. I was surprised you didn't include Bud's most interesting dogfight where Bud had a German on his tail, but went straight vertical to get the German to stall right before he could get his guns on Bud.
I’d love to hear that 111 crew’s story. “Zis American, he flies over and I went to pull out my Luger. I would have gotten him but I was running too fast”.
There was also the fact the Germans were often forced to send up older Me109s without methonal water injection for emergency escape power. The German ace Erich Hartman complained about this in his bio.
Sir I’d love nothing more then to become a member but I am a poor man with a family. My hand to the bible, when my fortunes change I’ll be on that list with bells on. I love the work you and your team do please don’t ever give up.
Do you have any reference for the execution of Lt. Joseph F. Pierce. Everything I see in the 357th sites on line just says KIA. It would be extremely unusual for the Germans to execute an American POW pilot, they even sent troops out specifically to catch them before the they could be murdered by enraged civilians.
Unfortunately the only information here is in Buds book, which provides no date at all. So I'm afraid it would be nearly impossible to find. Don't even know what airfield!
@@TJ3 shame I thought there was a date . Surely his or the squadron flight records /after action reports would if not pinpoint date , should narrow time frame considerably. It's so terrible to keep seeing friends died along the way of the war. :(

These documentaries are so well researched and brought to life. I love everyone. Great job!!
I saw him featured in Dogfights what a story, I never met him but I saw him at an airshow in Nampa where they showed his story.
Love the guy, so glad to see the unveiling of his statue
