How to get the pilot's recollection based on the warplane history
I hope yall know about how terrible BetterHelp is. It has exploited its users, and trust me, there is a reason so many CCs have boycotted them.
Every good story involves Thunderchiefs and Phantoms. Speaking of Thunderchiefs, theres two F-105 pilots who received the Medal of Honor. Their stories are pretty badass
4 days later they set another trap. 2 F-4's flew like RF-4C's and 2 Mig-21's took the bait and both were shot down.
Correction: Olds did not come up with the BOLO idea. Cherry and Wetterhan came up with the idea and had Olds submit it to command for approval. General Olds was my hero as a kid. I got to meet him at an airshow once. He was a great fighter pilot, but a better human being.
Heaven is safer with you flying cover. RIP General.
-PhantomF4G
You are correct sir!!
Camlee dalat vietnam
So these 2 Luetenants "instructed Olds to send it up to command?" .....
Probably not. More likely, Olds liked the idea and collaborated on the plan, approved it before taking it to the General.
Rolling Thunder was a hedge trimming exercise. By the time a mission made i's way up the chain, got approval in D.C. and made its way back down, the targets were moved or the strike was modified to the point where they were pounding mud. Criminal that he was (I mean Johnson was too) Nixon pulled the stop pins with Linebacker I & II. We went "downtown" on those and brought Hanoi to the table.
Olds also got called on the carpet for this operation. They planned it at the wing level and kept D.C. out of it. McNamara was livid. But what could he do?
FTR, Robin Olds and Wyatt Earp have styled my mustache for decades.
Maybe a lesson there? Keep the politicians out of the fight. Unless, of course, some of them are willing to go into the fight themselves?
@@garydaniels5495: This type of decision making is one of the reasons why the US lost the Vietnam War. LBJ prided himself that he had to approved every bombing mission in North Vietnam. And to add gasoline to the fire, the US made their rules of engagement public, and to the adversary, dumb dbumb, dumb. LBJ and his Great Society program brought the US welfare system to what it is today, millions of people dependent on government handouts. But you have to give LBJ credit, he didn't start the Vietnam War, he inherited when John Kennedy was assassinated. Remember VPs are selected on the basis of how many votes can they draw.
@@garydaniels5495 My late wife (fu_k cancer) said, "The Department of Defense needs to have its name changed back to The War Department. The military branches need to be given objectives, and the means to achieve victory without political interference. The point of the military is to kill people and break stuff. Don't train men to be beasts only to force them to sit, lay down, and roll over. Turn our fighting forces loose to DESTROY THE ENEMY UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY." Also, the Allies should have supported Ho Chi Minh when he asked for help in getting the French out of Vietnam. Oh, but nooooo, we didn't do that. The whole mess could have been avoided.
From what I heard in dogfights, this it messed with their ability to operate and now they weren’t sure wether it was F-105's or F-4's waiting in ambush again
Haha that is great!
Yes, the “Dogfights” episode on this (“Air Ambush” Season 1, ep 2) is excellent as well.
a true legendary great warrior
one of the best lines to describe him "in a different time and era Robin couldve been a warrior king"
As an aside-ish thing we still had F-105's with the reserve wing here at Hill when I first arrived in 85. I'd always heard the nickname "Thud" came from the sound of the F-105 hitting the ground but figured it was simply a shortened version of the actual name "Thunderchief". I was wrong and the night the last two 105's left for the boneyard I found it was called that.
I was at the far end of the runway waiting on the road to access the taxiway to get to a hard pad when they rolled up for take off. First the throttles went to full power with a roar, then the roar deepened as they started to roll. Then there was a huge THUD as they hit the water injection and two spikes of flame climbed almost vertically off the runway. Hell of a memory and hell of a sight.
Well this seems more detailed than that episode from “Dogfights”.
Same thoughts exactly, that was one of my favorite episodes from the “Dogfights” series but this went way more in-depth on the whole story.
The “Dogfights” episode on Bolo was excellent as was this video.
I have no doubt you'll make an episode of dogfights of May 10, 1972, the biggest day of air combat over Vietnam.
The F-105 was not some helpless prey. They had a 20mm cannon at a time when the F4 didn't and down low they were an absolute rocket ship. They were responsible for downing several MiGs during the war.
I think they were helpless prey as they kept getting shot down by mig 21s
100% correct but on bomber missions, heavily laden with bombs they couldn't manuever....
They were a plane fulfilling a mission they weren't designed for expect losses. Pentagon is probably to blame for not having a better plane than 105 and navy high upside are responsible for thinking guns weren't necessary on f4. They failed in their job and weren't held accountable
Operation BOLO! I've been so excited to see this one. Appreciate all you do TJ. Stay awesome!
Thanks as always!!
Down in my back due to an injury obtained during a mission. Some good days , some bad , but a good cup of coffee , my meds, and especially TJ dropping a vid just made my day a little brighter. 😊
Get on a bicycle and ween the meds. Faith will set you free.
Thanks for your service ❤
Thanks for continuing to get these awesome historical stories put out - Nice!!!
Awesomely well made video, hard to believe you had so much material to work with...
Wow! Great production!
Robin and Chappie. Love those two guys!
One of my first memories of the Vietnam War was this story! Naturally, it was not in as much detail as this! This video fills the voids............. after all those years!
Olds was the quintessential fighter pilot! Operation Bolo, however, wasn't originally his idea but Capt. John Stone's. Stone brought it to Olds, he agreed with it and assigned 4 pilots (one of which was Stone) to plan it out. I don't say this to diminish anything that Olds did, but rather to ensure that the other pilots receive their due credit!
The F4E had a 20mm Gun. Made close in Dog Fights possible. I was a Phantom Driver.
The Phantom never had internal guns. Had a belly or wing mounted gun but not that accurate
every evening i jump into my F-4 on Enigma in DCS and for a few minutes i can barely grasp the immensity of what a stud Robin Olds was !!!
Another great video as always! So great to learn the stories of our countries heroes, with great commentary and well put together visuals to boot!
Thanks for the help Orca!
Years ago Dogfights did an amazing job at showing this epic battle. God do I miss that show.
Great video. The animation was awesome . I am fortunate to have gotten to meet VN War pilots from the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. I always enjoyed their stories.
Great story. My experience was with RF4B Photo birds. 1967-2006, USMC, Vietnam. We flew in fast and took the pictures, with EA6B escorts with ECM. Thanks and Semper Fi.
Enjoyed your video! Thanks for sharing!
💯👍👊
Glad you enjoyed it!
South Korea just retired their Phantoms. End of an era
My father in law helped developed a radar jamming device that helped bring down north Vietnam Migs, he was a officer in electronic warfare aboard a carrier in the 60s he got a medal from the navy for a job well done
THANK 😇
Robin old is a legend for help turned the tide of the air war over Vietnam great video TJ3. Q:Are you excited to hear the new release of il-2 Korea.
Absolutely!!
What a coincidence, as I was traveling East on I-80 in Nebraska I was listening / watching this video and I looked over to my left and there was an F-105 on a pylon right next to the highway. Gorgeous looking bird
Fascinating video, TJ!
Thank you Hornet!
I'm reading Fighter Pilot: The Memories of Legendary Ace Robin Olds right now. He describes these very tactics when he enters in the Vietnam War. This video is perfect for anyone who's reading the book.
Awesome! My dad was "Phil": then Major Philip P Combies. He was Rambler 04 on Bolo and had a probable Mig-21 kill and a confirmed Mig-21 kill on Bolo. On May 20, 1967 he shot down a Mig-17 and received the Silver Star for his gallantry in action that day. He served as a flight commander in the 433rd TFS "Satan's Angels".
Thank you for the story!!!
Regular people start a war. Politicians F' it up by incompetence. Story older than time.
Robin Olds, a multi-war fighter pilot badass par excellence in the F-4 Phantom badass fighter. A match made in heaven.
Col. Robin Olds. A legend ❤
Cool a new TJ3 Video, What a great way to start the weekend . As always you never disappoint. Thanks for all your hard work and research you put into making these videos for us. Have a wonderful weekend my friend and Please Keep 'em flyin we've got your six.
LEGENDS!
Thanks
Thank you!
The book Robin Olds Frigher Pilot is a must read.
Excellent visuals of the F4 Phantom , Top Dogfighter , just luv the the Aircraft ..Great Vid.
Thank you!
If you've never seen Robin Olds there's an old History Channel episode dog fights with him amd some interviews on TH-cam. He was quite the character.
In 1990 I had to go to DMRO for Kaiserslautern was near Kleber. We had M60 track pads to deliver for surplus. At the yard just about everything was there, bonus they had about 3 retired F-4 trainers that were only the fuselage. Got two upper side mirrors and a seat cushion from one of the trainers.
Later in a surprise inspection the CSM (Vietnam Vet) came into my room and saw the seat cushion and asked why I had it.
I said it was from an F-4......nothing else was said and he walked out.
F-105 Thunderchief's replacement the F-111 didn't do that well at first deployment, due to it's wing pivot box failures but once this was rectified along with the second deployment of the F-111 these aircraft were untouchable with the best bombing strike survival records of any aircraft in the Vietnam war.
Wonderful and great job TJ3 Team. From Panamá 🇵🇦
Thank you!
It's always a treat to see a brand new video of you guys! Love your guys' content! keep it up! are you guys still gonna do the big episode of the newly found d-day footage???
That's gonna vibe a full documentary! Will be coming in the Fall.
@@TJ3 Awesome possum 👍

You should definitely do a video on viper pettigrew im not sure if he had any air to air victories in combat but i am sure if it wasn't for him topgun 1 and 2 and our beloved F-14 wouldn't be the same...rip bud Anderson rip viper pettigrew and rip robin olds
This story never gets old. If true warriors like Robin Olds had been allowed to bring the fight to the enemy in this manner Vietnam would have ended very differently.
The ' trap ' was so gangster!
Olds died a matter of weeks before I was nearly killed when my friend lost control of his car and ripped it in half. I'd always planned on joining the Air Force, wanting to fly the F-15. My father flew the F-4 and then the F-15 when they entered service. Small world.
By 1972 they were teaching about General Olds in USAF' NCO Leadership School.
"Experience the battle, dissect the tactics, relieve the dogfights!!!!"
Nice gains, bro.
TOP GUN
Thanks again my friend T of TJ3 History.....Yes i remember this well.......
Old F-4 Shoe🇺🇸 in my 80's
Thanks Shoe! Who did you fly with?
The VPAF hadn't received MiG-21F-13's at this point in the war, they were instead using MiG-21PFL's, an export variant of the MiG-21PF with the FL's radar and sensor suite, of course we don't have that plane in-game, the closest we have is the event locked PFM (which still has a different tail structure and cockpit vs the PFL) and we don't have VPAF skins for it, overall a pretty nice recreation regardless :D
My dad flew A-26's in Vietnam
Great job on video!! ..... And Thank You Hero PILOTS, Proud to be an American
Love the phantom. Such a muscular fighter.
Yo,this is a masterpiece and very cinematic! Please tell me you’ll do more modern jets like this Tj! I would love to see them so bad!!
Thank you! Perhaps!!
@@TJ3 Lets fricking goo!!
Godspeed General Robin Olds.
My understanding is that JB Stone came up with the idea for Operation Bolo
His name before the video reveals his name was Robin olds the North Vietnamese ground controllers as well as the pilots were using the Soviet Style when it came to ground controllers and Pilots following orders.
Sry met a vietnam veteran today been living on the streets for 7 years
I want to know how to use user decals or roundels on the vehicles like you did with the MiG 21 in this video.
Great video! Did you record the fight scenes in dcs?
No I'm afraid I'm not great with DCS! This is War Thunder
@@TJ3 alr cool
They also made the F4's transponders look like those of Thuds.
I had forgotten about that part. Thanks!
The F4 was proof that if you strapped big enough engines to it, even a brick will fly
The North Vietnamese had more aerial victories than the Americans, based on the tactics you so well described.
Have you ever wondered if some of those Migs were flown by Russians?
BG Robinson Olds is Old Skool sky warrior! "We tangled....they lost!" Says it all. ♠️🎩🎯🎱🇺🇸🏁🇮🇱🇺🇦🔱🌻🌸🌼💮🏴☠️🏹
I very good video, for sure, but having heard MOST of the total story on cable tv, several years ago, I was disappointed that "the rest of the story" wasn't covered.
What the cable tv version mentioned, was how the US had anticipated that these short-ranged MIG-21s would get low on fuel, and then, unable to land at their own base (for reasons that I can't remember), they would proceed to another North Vietnamese airbase. The US had fighters waiting for the MIGs there.
The US also anticipated that the MIGs would then proceed on to an airbase inside China. The US had fighters waiting for them to start heading there.
But, unfortunately, I never got to watch what happened in that part of the battle. I was hoping that I would get to catch it here, but no such luck.
Perhaps I can do an online search of the story, and just read about it. At least I now know that it was called "Operation Bolo".
But, at least, I did get to enjoy what was presented here.
Sometimes the old ways are still the best.
F-105 , should have a FB designation like the FB-111
I wanted to know what happened to the f4e Arkansas Traveler II
It took tactics. Tactics that favored the F-4’s strengths. Any Phantom driver will tell you don’t tangle with a MiG-21 down low, they’ll outmaneuver you. The same way the AVG used their inferior Flying Tiger P-40’s to best far superior Oscars and Zeros.
Nice
Looks like most of your content is WW2. This is really well done. Maybe consider putting out some more “Jet era” stuff.
This is great but it would have been nice too pay tribute to Robin Olds seeing as he died recently at age 102
Nonsense. He died in 2007 at 84 years
The air war specifically Rolling Thunder had a massive effect on the war. Even Vietnams leaders stated had the bombing continued for another 2 weeks they would have surrendered.
If it hadn’t been for Hanoi Jane and others the outcome should have been different.
I feel for the U.S. ground troops. Those guys were hero’s and tough!
After we got our hands on a MIG-21stolen by a defector, a top secret operation at area 51 led to a tactics change that dramatically improved the kill ratio between F-4 and MIG-21.
Are you sure that it was from a defector? The version that I heard was that, we got a MIG-21 from Canada.
The short version of the story is, that, Canada was pissed that we wouldn't sell them our top fighter. So they surreptitiously bought a bunch of MIG-21s from the Soviet Union. They learned how to fly them. But then the US found out about it. The US made Canada give them all back to the Soviets, except for two. One crashed (during routine training operations in Canada), out of fuel. And the US asked for the other one. (Hopefully, the US paid for it.)
Now it's possible that we are both correct.
Now, I do know of a MIG-25 Foxbat that a Soviet defector flew to Japan. I actually remember reading in Time Magazine about that when it happened.
"On September 6, 1976, Lieutenant Viktor Belenko of the Soviet Air Defense Forces defected by flying his Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25P "Foxbat" aircraft from near Vladivostok in the Far East of the Soviet Union to Hakodate Airport in Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan." - Wikipedia, for what that's worth.
@@perrybonney9090 Thanks for the info. I saw the note about the defecting Mig21 on another Area51 video divulging some declassified info. We also directly stole a Hind helo. Hoisted it right off of an African airfield where it was awaiting repairs.
@@SGTSnakeUSMC I have heard something about the Hind, just as you say.
the F-105 was a beautiful aircraft
The entire production of the F105 Thunder chief (aka Thunder Thud) was shot down over North Viet Nam.🤯
No it was not. Why bullshit?
QUESTION: what sim is he using?
doesn't look like DCS

?!?
lol
I call "BS" on Robin Olds giving up a 5th kill and becoming a Jet ACE in Vietnam. No fighter pilot would give up a Mig kill to avoid a staff job.
Of course, pull the "hot" qb right?
By your title it means, it took the entire US Air Force to beat the Mig-21. Probably true, that is why the US lost the war.
Except the US forced the Vietnamese to the negotiating table, so how was it a loss?
Excellent video! F4’s and Robin Olds what a serious and deadly combination!!
The Mig was the Ak-47 of fighter jets.
It is hard not to come to the conclusion that the way that Vietnam and Afghanistan wars were micromanaged, from Washington, not to win the war, but rather to continue them to the enrichment of industries, and the shareholders that benefit, regardless of the loss of life. People like Robin Olds, competent veteran commanders, in the air, on the ground and on the water, had they been allowed to pursue the enemy and defeat them could have ended the war earlier, and with different results, with a whole lot more people, military and civilian, still being alive today..
I always trust old school a man who found his 🪽 wings in world 🌍 war 2 respect 🙏 to a legendary fighter pilot showed the enemy in Vietnam how to deal with enemy aircraft 💥💥💥💥💥💥🤝🙏a man of courage 🤝

If his blood alcohol level was 11% he would be dead. The legal limit in my State is .08 not .8, that would be lethal as well.
it prove you can not win a war with airplane.
In 1966 only 5 F-105's were shot down by Migs and only 1 was a 21. 1967 different story 11 lost to Migs and 10 were lost to 21's.
What software is being used for the aircraft in this video?
War Thunder! You can download at link in description :)
The question is. How many MIG-21's were flown by Russians?
