As an aside-ish thing we still had F-105's with the reserve wing here at Hill when I first arrived in 85. I'd always heard the nickname "Thud" came from the sound of the F-105 hitting the ground but figured it was simply a shortened version of the actual name "Thunderchief". I was wrong and the night the last two 105's left for the boneyard I found it was called that. I was at the far end of the runway waiting on the road to access the taxiway to get to a hard pad when they rolled up for take off. First the throttles went to full power with a roar, then the roar deepened as they started to roll. Then there was a huge THUD as they hit the water injection and two spikes of flame climbed almost vertically off the runway. Hell of a memory and hell of a sight.

I was at Korat in 1966-7. We did not have as bad a opinion of the F-105 as is portrayed here. It was an old fighter by this time and we used what we had (as always). It was the Russians that were the problem, not the North Vietnamese. They were much better pilots than the North Vietnamese. The same is true of the SAMS, the Russian technicians were much better than the Vietnamese. No one mentions how fast the F-105 could go if it was in one piece, close to 2,000 mph. (Once). (A little over 1,000 mph on the deck compared to the MIG-21's approx 750 mph). Ask the Russians how they liked the AGM-45 Shrike.
The F-105 was not some helpless prey. They had a 20mm cannon at a time when the F4 didn't and down low they were an absolute rocket ship. They were responsible for downing several MiGs during the war.
They were a plane fulfilling a mission they weren't designed for expect losses. Pentagon is probably to blame for not having a better plane than 105 and navy high upside are responsible for thinking guns weren't necessary on f4. They failed in their job and weren't held accountable

His name before the video reveals his name was Robin olds the North Vietnamese ground controllers as well as the pilots were using the Soviet Style when it came to ground controllers and Pilots following orders.
I very good video, for sure, but having heard MOST of the total story on cable tv, several years ago, I was disappointed that "the rest of the story" wasn't covered. What the cable tv version mentioned, was how the US had anticipated that these short-ranged MIG-21s would get low on fuel, and then, unable to land at their own base (for reasons that I can't remember), they would proceed to another North Vietnamese airbase. The US had fighters waiting for the MIGs there. The US also anticipated that the MIGs would then proceed on to an airbase inside China. The US had fighters waiting for them to start heading there. But, unfortunately, I never got to watch what happened in that part of the battle. I was hoping that I would get to catch it here, but no such luck. Perhaps I can do an online search of the story, and just read about it. At least I now know that it was called "Operation Bolo". But, at least, I did get to enjoy what was presented here.
Robin Olds is an interesting character. Too bad he didn't get a chance to fly in Korea (against his best efforts to do so). Honestly, there are times when a man like him has been needed in command. He may bend some rules but in my research, almost always for the right reasons. He was never one to pull any punches in speaking his mind.
We always hear about the amazing exploits of the US pilots during this war. It would be more interesting to hear some accounts of the MIG pilots. I'm sure they're not all of the Stormtrooper ilk given the losses reported even in this clip.
You left out some of the best parts, like how they grounded every single other US aircraft to pull this off (you had to have visual confirmation to launch a missile) they also didnt tell the NSA about the operation because they needed their surveillance planes to pull it off.
After we got our hands on a MIG-21stolen by a defector, a top secret operation at area 51 led to a tactics change that dramatically improved the kill ratio between F-4 and MIG-21.
Are you sure that it was from a defector? The version that I heard was that, we got a MIG-21 from Canada. The short version of the story is, that, Canada was pissed that we wouldn't sell them our top fighter. So they surreptitiously bought a bunch of MIG-21s from the Soviet Union. They learned how to fly them. But then the US found out about it. The US made Canada give them all back to the Soviets, except for two. One crashed (during routine training operations in Canada), out of fuel. And the US asked for the other one. (Hopefully, the US paid for it.) Now it's possible that we are both correct. Now, I do know of a MIG-25 Foxbat that a Soviet defector flew to Japan. I actually remember reading in Time Magazine about that when it happened. "On September 6, 1976, Lieutenant Viktor Belenko of the Soviet Air Defense Forces defected by flying his Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25P "Foxbat" aircraft from near Vladivostok in the Far East of the Soviet Union to Hakodate Airport in Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan." - Wikipedia, for what that's worth.
@@perrybonney9090 Thanks for the info. I saw the note about the defecting Mig21 on another Area51 video divulging some declassified info. We also directly stole a Hind helo. Hoisted it right off of an African airfield where it was awaiting repairs.
IRL MiG-21 was very effective and scored 165 air victories, with the loss of 65 aircraft according to Vietnam. According to US data MiG-21s downed 103 planes at cost of 79 own.
It took tactics. Tactics that favored the F-4’s strengths. Any Phantom driver will tell you don’t tangle with a MiG-21 down low, they’ll outmaneuver you. The same way the AVG used their inferior Flying Tiger P-40’s to best far superior Oscars and Zeros.
It's always a treat to see a brand new video of you guys! Love your guys' content! keep it up! are you guys still gonna do the big episode of the newly found d-day footage???

If it hadn’t been for Hanoi Jane and others the outcome should have been different.
I feel for the U.S. ground troops. Those guys were hero’s and tough!
I enjoyed your video ! 👍
Military books on tactical fighting are indispensable for upcoming men and women to study as they progress in their military profession !
As an example Patton read the book the German general Rommel wrote on tank warfare !
Cool a new TJ3 Video, What a great way to start the weekend . As always you never disappoint. Thanks for all your hard work and research you put into making these videos for us. Have a wonderful weekend my friend and Please Keep 'em flyin we've got your six.
My understanding is that JB Stone came up with the idea for Operation Bolo
We always hear about the amazing exploits of the US pilots during this war. It would be more interesting to hear some accounts of the MIG pilots. I'm sure they're not all of the Stormtrooper ilk given the losses reported even in this clip.
Wow! Great production!
Fascinating video, TJ!
Thank you Hornet!
BG Robinson Olds is Old Skool sky warrior! "We tangled....they lost!" Says it all. ♠️🎩🎯🎱🇺🇸🏁🇮🇱🇺🇦🔱🌻🌸🌼💮🏴☠️🏹
Regular people start a war. Politicians F' it up by incompetence. Story older than time.
Great job on video!! ..... And Thank You Hero PILOTS, Proud to be an American
The ' trap ' was so gangster!
Love the phantom. Such a muscular fighter.
(Hopefully, the US paid for it.)
Now it's possible that we are both correct.
@@Flying_Snakes I have heard something about the Hind, just as you say.
Enjoyed your video! Thanks for sharing!
💯👍👊
Glad you enjoyed it!
I want to know how to use user decals or roundels on the vehicles like you did with the MiG 21 in this video.
Certified badass.
It's always a treat to see a brand new video of you guys! Love your guys' content! keep it up! are you guys still gonna do the big episode of the newly found d-day footage???
That's gonna vibe a full documentary! Will be coming in the Fall.
@@TJ3 Awesome possum 👍
My dad flew A-26's in Vietnam
TOP GUN
South Korea just retired their Phantoms. End of an era
This is great but it would have been nice too pay tribute to Robin Olds seeing as he died recently at age 102
Nonsense. He died in 2007 at 84 years
F-105 , should have a FB designation like the FB-111
The North Vietnamese had more aerial victories than the Americans, based on the tactics you so well described.
Have you ever wondered if some of those Migs were flown by Russians?
20:16 - Dude straight up looks like Tom Cruise. heh
Sry met a vietnam veteran today been living on the streets for 7 years
N Vietnamese pilots: “they’re not thuds, they’re phantoms, what do we do?”
Ground controllers: “duh, I don’t know why are you asking me?”
The F4 was proof that if you strapped big enough engines to it, even a brick will fly
Thank you for the story!!!
Thanks
Thank you!
Anyone else find this after watching The Operation Room's vid on BOLO?
Godspeed General Robin Olds.
Looks like most of your content is WW2. This is really well done. Maybe consider putting out some more “Jet era” stuff.
I wanted to know what happened to the f4e Arkansas Traveler II
Mig 21 is some plane , Indian Airforce Mig 21's were flying sorties over Pakistan only a few years ago
Choosing the Thud over the North American F-107 was one of the worst mistakes the US military made.
LEGENDS!
the F-105 was a beautiful aircraft
Nice gains, bro.
QUESTION: what sim is he using?
doesn't look like DCS
